November at TCWT - Part 2

The November meeting of the Tri County Woodturners will be on Wednesday, November 4th at the KEYSTONE REC CENTER. Doors open about 6pm and the meeting starts at 6:30.

Election of Officers for 2027 - We will hold our election of officers for next year.

Florida Woodturning Symposium Ticket Raffle

We are raffling-off one free entry to the 2027 Florida Woodturning Symposium. The drawing of a winner will be held at this meeting. Tickets are $5 each, buy two and double your chances of winning. All the proceeds benefit our club.

2x4 Challenge

Entries for the 2x4 challenge should be brought to this meeting. There are “novice” and “advanced” divisions, and a gift card will be awarded to the top entry in each division. Bring something and participate in the fun.

Show and Tell

We will also have our standard Show and Tell. If you have current work other than your 2x4 challenge item(s), please bring them.

Turn and Learns

There will be two Turn and Learn’s in November. The first will be on Saturday, Nov 14th at the Land O’Lakes Library. Signup is on the library’s website. There is no charge. The second will be on Saturday, Nov 21st at Steve Hood’s shop in Lakeland. Signup is at the meeting. The cost is $15, mostly to cover lunch.

Demonstration/Discussion

Steve Hood and Rick Donaldson have both served as judges for the Woodturning Competition at the Florida State Fair. They will lead a discussion on how to enter items for the upcoming fair (to be held in February 2027). They will discuss the entry process, what to enter, and definition of the different item classes and some strategies to increase your chances of receiving an award. They will also have several turned items on display and talk about the judging criteria used when the entries are evaluated.

Club members will have the option to ask Steve and Rick to offer their opinions on your Show & Tell, 2x4 Challenge or other items, but only with your prior consent.

The November meeting of the Tri County Woodturners will be on Wednesday, November 4th at the KEYSTONE REC CENTER. Doors open about 6pm and the meeting starts at 6:30.

Our regular venue in Lutz is closed for the week due to being an election site. The Keystone Rec Center is located at 17928 Gunn Highway in Odessa. That is about 1/2 mile north of the intersection of Gunn Highway and Van Dyck Road. We met there in July.

Holiday Party volunteers are needed. Our December meeting will be our Christmas Party, Dec 2nd at the Lutz Community Center. We need folks to help Jim Henderson do the planning and ex*****on. Please contact Jim at [email protected].

Upcoming Meetings and Demonstrators
October 7, 2026: Demonstrator will be Jack Roberts. Jack will show us how to do offset turning.

Doors open a 6 pm with meeting to start at 6:30pm. Guests and Visitors always Welcome.

Tri County Wood Turners Bring Back Challenge.

For those not in attendance at the September meeting, here are the details on the Bring Back Challenge for the next 2 months:

October –

A lidded vessel capable of being used as a Kaden’s Cause urn. The interior should hold about 1 to 1.5 cup volume. You can use uncooked rice to measure volume

November - The 2x4 challenge

Your turned item can be as simple or as complex as you wish. It must be made from a pine or SPF 2x4. We will award two gift cards. One for novice entries and one for advanced entries.

The next meeting of the Tri County Woodturners will be Wednesday, September 2nd at the Lutz Community Center. Doors open about 6pm, the meeting starts at 6:30.

This month there will be two Turn and Learns. The first will be at the Land O’Lakes library on Saturday, Sept 5th. Sign up on the library website. The second will be on Saturday, Sept 19th at Steve Hood’s shop in Lakeland. Sign up will be at our September meeting.

Our demonstrator for the September meeting will be Jeff Langsner. He will demonstrate the use of 3D printing for woodturners.

Please bring wood for the raffle.

On Wednesday August 5, 2026 will be the next meeting of the TriCounty Woodturners. The doors open at 6 pm with meeting starting at 0630 pm. The demonstrator will be Steve Hood showing how to turn hollow form inserts (thread chasing).

There will be no meeting of the Tri County Woodturners in July. The Lutz Community Center is still closed. Repairs to the building are scheduled to be finished by July 4th, but seem to be lagging behind schedule. Our lathe and other equipment is inaccessible.
