Speaker on new Distracted Driving Law - Thursday, June 1, 2023

Trooper Steven Hill of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be our guest speaker during the next meeting of the Rotary Club of Loudonville. The public is invited for this free event.

Hill is an eight-year veteran of the patrol. We've asked him to talk about the new "diminished capacity" law recently signed which affects anyone who drives operates a motor vehicle and uses their cell phone at the same time.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 1st at 7p.m. at the Hans Event Center located adjacent to Loudonville's historic Ohio Theatre.

Light refreshments will be available for all.

While vacationing in Jamestown, NY last weekend, I met up with fellow Rotarians from the Jamestown and Falconer, NY clubs. Tried my luck on the big 50/50 raffle, too. All three clubs were sponsoring a "night at the ballpark" featuring the Jamestown Tarp Skunks vs. Elmira Pioneers. Final score Pioneers 14, Skunks 2. Not a good night for the little critters.

Rotary congratulates the L/P School Foundation for achieving its fundraising goal of $100,000. By surpassing this goal, it now stands a good chance of building its endowment even further through a matching grant by the Ramser Family Foundation and additional gifts and grants like the $3,000 gift made by the Rotary Club of Loudonville on May 19th. Accepting the check presented by Rotary president Brian Hartzell is Mike Bandy, president of the L/P School Foundation. (Photo by Jim Brewer, The Loudonville Times.)

Rotarians heard from Dr. John Stephen Allerding on May 5th about his latest adventure at Palmer Station in Antarctica. Fascinating presentation with plenty of beautiful photos of Antarctica and its wildlife. This was Steve's fifth posting to the southern-most continent. Gifting him with a Rotary speaker's pen is Rotarian Brian Hinkle of Park National Park in Loudonville and Steve's nephew)

Maple sugaring is right around the corner say Mark Sommers and Tom Bachelder, volunteer naturalists at Malabar Farm State Park in Lucas, Ohio. Mark and Tom addressed the Rotary Club of Loudonville on February 10 to talk about Louis Bromfield's efforts to create a sustainable maple sugar and syrup crop from his acres of sugar maple trees. Rotarians learned about Native Americans' discovery and how pioneers improved the process.
