On Tuesday we joined ÓRALE, DSA LB, and more to march to this week’s Long Beach City Council meeting to show that the faith community supports protecting immigrant families!

Advocates are calling for for immigrant dignity, privacy, and safety through a stronger Long Beach Values Act. This policy is Long Beach City’s shield to protect community members from the violence of family separation and deportation. It serves as the city's local sanctuary policy, to prevent collaboration and information sharing between city employees and federal immigration agencies.

The protections it offers are necessary, but it has gaps that need to be filled to truly strengthen the city for immigrant families. That's why we are asking the city to expand protections to everyone, ensure city employees are accountable to the Values Act, and prevent collaboration or data-sharing that places our loved ones in danger.

In late September, a group of faith leaders, immigrant rights activists, and others, set off on a nearly 100-mile journey by foot from the in Southern California’s high desert to the in Downtown Los Angeles.

In the searing, record-breaking heat, they walked to draw attention to the relentless violence and violations by federal immigration agents against countless human beings.

On October 6, as the “Clear the Road to Freedom Pilgrimage” culminated in downtown LA, Rev Jennifer Gutierrez of CLUE: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice explained why she walked and what her goal was.

A reflection on the seventh day of our pilgrimage by Marisa Latham French:

Walking in grief.
Walking in fear.
Walking in love.
Walking in anger.
Walking, while holding the unknown.

My brain keeps asking, why will these 96 miles matter in the end?

My heart keeps asking why can’t we, collectively, not seem to see each other as the same, while witnessing the inhumane treatment carried out in the detention centers?

My body is experiencing so many different aches and pains, but she seems to understand, "One more step, baby." (As of this writing, I’ve walked 83 miles, rode in the van and passed waters to walkers when my body told me to stop.)

My spirit, my center, the space within that communicates with the divine, raised a question three days into the pilgrimage following a debilitating pain from my IT band into my knee….

Where are you God?

As the days have continued, God has come through the love and kindness of strangers. The fellow walker who keeps checking in on my knee. Those following us close in vans who pull up out of nowhere with cold water, electrolytes, or a ride to the next stop. And a handful of new friends who I can now never imagine my life without.

Day after day, I keep telling my husband (a fellow pilgrim), I have never been in a large group with folks with such deep reservoirs of love for their immigrant brothers and sisters.

This experience began with can I survive, and the answer gently unfolded, in community. I can, I will. In the same way we will close down the inhumane detention centers, with one step, one choice at a time- in community.

This world is possible, friends.

Day Five of the pilgrimage. We have traveled 67/96 miles towards the Metropolitan Detention Center in Downtown LA. Today was filled with a lot of gratitude for the supporters showing up for walkers along the way.

As high temperatures made us take a break, we were welcomed by St. Marks Upland Episcopal and Claremont UMC for food, blister supplies, and room to rest our feet and bodies. After our dinner tonight as the sun goes down, we will continue to walk the remaining four miles to our destination in La Verne.

Thank you to all who have shown walkers kindness and support along the way. Together we will win. Together we will see the detention centers shut down.

With day four completed, we are at the halfway mark for our journey from Adelanto Detention Center to the Metropolitan Detention Center in DTLA. After a night camping nearby a stream, walkers departed the mountains and entered the city of Fontana. As temperatures rise over the weekend, we are requesting umbrellas for sun protection while we continue. Please DM if you are able to bring umbrellas tomorrow - we depart at 6am to beat the sun.

Tonight we shared a Shabbat dinner with Nefesh members, sang and ate together, and heard from a community member about her deeply upsetting year and a half trapped in Adelanto, how she was able to be released after suffering extreme medical neglect, and her commitment to using that experience to help free those who are still locked inside under torture conditions.

May we see a world without detention centers, and may it be soon.

Next week, the Los Angeles Godmother’s Vigil will join with the walkers from the “Clear the Road” Interfaith Pilgrimage. Walkers will be concluding their 96 mile journey at the weekly vigil at the Metropolitan Detention Center. The Godmothers have held the line at MDC for over a year. This day needs that same strength from you. We need numbers. We need presence. We need to be impossible to ignore.

The next Orange County vigil will take place on Thursday, 10/15 and every other Thursday from 12pm-12:45pm.

As we reflected on Day Two of the pilgrimage, a walker was moved to share this quote from Dorothy Day:

"We must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action of the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them."

26/96 miles traveled towards the Metropolitan Detention Center - our feet hurt but our hearts are full. Our thoughts are on our community members who have had to make journeys in the desert under precarious, dangerous and heartbreaking circumstances. It was a long day full of duality, with grief and laughter.
