Best-selling author, illustrator, and cartoonist Emma Steinkellner’s visit to Heliotrope Ave. Elementary at the end of September, where she presented her graphic novel “Last Day Pool Party”—a story about friendship, growing up, and the dramatic mix those two can create. Students enjoyed the interactive talk, especially the draw-along portion, and just had an absolute blast meeting Ms. Steinkellner. Many, many thanks to her and Heliotrope Ave. for working with us to deliver a memorable day for the students! 🪻🧡💙

At the end of September, author and actress Sara Amini spent a very special day at Middleton St. Elementary, where she showcased her bilingual picture book “Luisa, At Your Service!” Having the opportunity to sit in on an engaging read-aloud of a book that joyfully celebrates home and to speak one-on-one with its author, who has an array of creative professional experiences to share from, the Middleton Jaguars spent an absolutely unforgettable day with Ms. Amini! 🐓🧡💙

Last week’s hosting of the 8th Yen and Dung Tran Distinguished Speaker Series at Esteban E. Torres High School starring Gustavo Arellano—food critic, LA Times columnist, and three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee—where students got to learn the wonders of food journalism and research culture through his experiences and inspirations writing his 2010 non-fiction book “Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.” Thank you, Mr. Arellano, for motivating the students at Torres High to explore writing and creative career paths through your thoughtful presentation 📝 And to Torres High, as well, for collaborating with us to organize the incredibly successful author visit. We hope for similar events in the future!
