Every single week, caring volunteers and staff pack grocery bags filled with protein, grains, fresh produce, and more to share at our Tuesday and Sunday Food Pantry in Koreatown. The result this year? 30,451 bags of groceries for families who need them.

Latine families, neighbors, volunteers, and staff help shape the identity of the Karsh Center and make it a place rooted in dignity, belonging, and mutual care. Their stories, relationships, and contributions are part of our shared community—not just this month, but all year long.

Last week, our Karsh West Tikkun Olam on the Go volunteers headed to Freedom Farms, where they spent the day seeding bok choi, red lettuce, dill, chamomile, parsley, rhubarb, and spinach, which will be part of the bounty that Freedom Farms shares to support healthy eating in our community.

During this time of year when we celebrate harvest festivals and the changing of the season in so many cultures, it's especially meaningful to get to help by digging our hands into the dirt and planting, building abundance and community for the season ahead! Thank you to our volunteers for your time, and to Freedom Farms and for this special opportunity.

La semana pasada, nuestros voluntarios del programa «Karsh West Tikkun Olam on the Go» acudieron a Freedom Farms, donde pasaron el día sembrando semillas de bok choy, lechuga roja, eneldo, manzanilla, perejil, ruibarbo y espinacas; cultivos que formarán parte de la cosecha que Freedom Farms comparte para fomentar una alimentación saludable en nuestra comunidad.

En esta época del año, en la que tantas culturas celebran festivales de la cosecha y el cambio de estación, resulta especialmente significativo poder colaborar hundiendo las manos en la tierra y sembrando, cultivando así abundancia y comunidad para la temporada que comienza. Chuseok, also known as Hangawi (한가위), is one of Korea’s most important traditional holidays and is celebrated around the autumn harvest. It is a time to gather with loved ones, share the abundance of the season, and remember those who came before us.

El Chuseok, también conocido como Hangawi (한가위), es una de las festividades tradicionales más importantes de Corea y se celebra en torno a la época de la cosecha otoñal. Es un momento para reunirse con los seres queridos, compartir la abundancia de la temporada y honrar a nuestros antepasados.

The Karsh Center will be closed on Monday, September 21, in observance of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur marks the Day of Atonement and holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar. It creates space to reflect, repent, set intentions, and ask how we might do better in the year ahead. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks wrote, "The single most important lesson of Yom Kippur is that it’s never too late to change, start again, and live differently from the way we’ve done in the past."

May this day inspire us to show up for one another, for ourselves, and for our shared community with respect, intention, and care in the year ahead.

To those who observe, g'mar chatimah tovah, may you be sealed for a good year ahead.

El Centro Karsh permanecerá cerrado el lunes 21 de septiembre con motivo de Yom Kipur. Yom Kipur marca el Día de la Expiación y es el día más sagrado del año en el calendario judío; es un momento para reflexionar, arrepentirse, establecer propósitos y preguntarnos cómo podemos mejorar en el año venidero. El Karsh Center le invita a una serie gratuita de talleres de 14 semanas para adultos mayores, organizada en colaboración con el Departamento de Salud Mental del Condado de Los Ángeles. Cada semana exploraremos un tema clave relacionado con la salud física y emocional: manejo del estrés, resiliencia, hábitos de sueño saludables, memoria, depresión y ansiedad, prevención de estafas, duelo y más.

¡No es necesario inscribirse previamente! Simplemente puede asistir a cualquiera de nuestras sesiones de los lunes. Esta serie se ofrece únicamente en español.
