Social-emotional learning (SEL) is essential to a student's academic growth, as SEL can determine whether educational goals are impeded or facilitated. At Green Dot, we use Social Emotional Screeners to reflect on the needs of students and support them so they can feel connected, respected, and supported.

Coach G at King Middle School in Beaumont, Texas, uses sports to guide her students to academic excellence. “They can come to you and tell you ‘Coach I’m going to play for you, I’m going to play volleyball, I’m going to play basketball.’ That’s fine and dandy, but, what is your behavior in class, what are your grades looking like? So, in order for you to do that, we need to work in your academics. When we say that, then sports. Academics… they already know academics are going to come first,” said Gauthier.

As a first year teacher at Martin Luther King Middle School in Beaumont, Texas, Ariana Darjean feels a special connection to her physical education students, thanks in part to having siblings that are as old as they are.

“You need to adjust and adapt and yes, I can relate to the kids a little more since I was in school not too long ago,” said Darjean, who also coaches the soccer team at the school. “I’m dealing with them now and I do think it’s a lot easier for me. I try to understand the way they think, the way they see things. Now, in this generation, nothing is a secret anymore.”

A pilot, a doctor, and a secret serviceman were all in the same building. This isn’t a setup for a punchline. This is just a few of the many professions students at Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy learned about during the school’s annual Career Day and Fair, which took place on November 4, 2022. “I hope that students see that there are multiple pathways to success and I hope that they learn something new about a field that they were either unaware of before, or further confirm their calling in a field,” said Nasia Turner, Black Excellence Specialist at Locke.
