The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a long-term substance abuse recovery center You can learn more at www.thebeaconhouse.org.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and career training through social enterprise programs, including a Thrift Shop. This allows the men to develop the life, career and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House. The organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility. With the support of our donors and the local community, we have helped thousands of men get a second chance at life and regain their place as responsible, productive members of society.

Eleven years ago, Ramon’s life was a mess. He couldn’t stop drinking and using substances, and after a su***de attempt and psychiatric hold, he reached out to Beacon House.

Once here, he got a sponsor, started helping others, and gradually learned to let go of his need to always be right. After two and a half years at Beacon House, he moved out and began building a new life.

Today, that life is better than he ever imagined. He started working in homeless services, has a great relationship with his family, and remains active in Alcoholics Anonymous, where he continues to help others. Above all, his faith is central to his life, and he credits God for making it all possible.

One of the ways our men grow is through self-examination. Each night, they take time to reflect on how their day went. They look at the things they did well and the areas where they struggled—and they write it down.

The next day, they share those reflections with someone and get feedback on where they can continue to grow. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about looking at yourself honestly, learning from your mistakes, and trying to do a little better tomorrow.

A big thank you to Sadhna Singh from Farmers & Merchants Bank for visiting Beacon House and leading a financial literacy training for our staff.

This training (and the sessions to follow) will better equip our staff to help our men navigate important financial decisions, from building credit and managing debt to saving and planning for the future, ultimately helping them build the financial skills they need to successfully reintegrate into life.

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) conducted a national survey to look at how widespread substance use disorder (SUD) has become in recent years. In 2024, about 48.4 million Americans ages 12 and older were found to be struggling with an SUD. That includes problems related to both alcohol and drugs.

What’s especially concerning is how few people are getting help. Only about 12% of people with an SUD received treatment. These numbers show that addiction affects millions of people and that access to effective treatment and long-term recovery support is becoming more important every day.

During his addiction, there were things Blair simply wasn’t ready to face. He didn’t want to accept that he was addicted to drugs, that he was hurting the people he loved, or that he had lost control of his life. Instead, he created a false version of reality that allowed him to keep using.

But in recovery, acceptance has allowed Blair to see his past clearly without getting stuck there. Instead of denying his mistakes or dwelling on them, he can use them as motivation to continue growing.

Beacon House won first place at the annual ASBCO Family Picnic and Chili Cook-Off! 🏆

After coming up short last year, we made a few tweaks to the chili recipe and came back looking for a win. And, of course, we brought tray after tray of our famous honey butter cornbread to go with it.

But more important than the food, this event gave our men another chance to connect with the local recovery community and have some good, clean fun.

Now the only question is: can we make it back-to-back next year?

Who remembers the Beacon House Block Parties?

Back in the day, these annual events were a big deal around here. Our men put the whole thing on and then the community would come out for a weekend of live music, crafts, good food, and fun in the streets of San Pedro.

And who could forget the infamous Resentment Booth? For a small donation, you could throw a pie in someone’s face and finally let that resentment go. 😂

Many men arrive at Beacon House after years of relying on the same beliefs, habits, and ways of thinking, only to find themselves facing the same painful outcomes over and over. Here, they learn to surrender what hasn't been serving them to make room for something healthier.

They learn to work through discomfort, ask for help, be of service to others, and trust in a Power greater than themselves. None of this happens overnight. It happens through daily practice. And slowly, their lives begin to change.

The miracle of recovery is that no one who is willing to do the work is beyond help.

It’s also why the Heart of Recovery Gala means so much to us. Each year, we bring the entire Beacon House family together to celebrate the transformations we have the privilege of witnessing every day.
