Teenagers aren’t automatically too young to understand their gender identity.

A 2026 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health followed 445 transgender and gender-diverse adolescents. About 97% continued to identify as transgender or nonbinary over an average of 2.4 years.

Data from the U.S. Transgender Survey also show that many transgender people recognized during childhood or adolescence that their gender differed from the s*x they were assigned at birth.

People come to understand and describe their gender at different ages. Every young person deserves to be heard, supported and treated with dignity.

LGBTQ+ people are not a modern phenomenon.

Across cultures and centuries, communities have recognized diverse s*xualities and gender roles. The National Park Service documents that many Indigenous North American nations recognized more than two gender roles. Hijra communities in South Asia and fa’afafine in Samoa also have long histories within their cultures.

These traditions should not be treated as direct equivalents of modern Western LGBTQ+ labels. Still, they make one thing clear: diversity in gender and s*xuality is not new.

Durante el , en PFLAG LA celebramos al actor y defensor Wilson Cruz, cuya carrera ha abierto más espacio para las personas LGBTQ+ y latinas en la pantalla.

Cuando Cruz apareció como Rickie Vasquez en “My So-Called Life” en 1994, el público vio algo que rara vez—si acaso—había visto antes: un actor abiertamente gay interpretando a un personaje abiertamente gay como parte del elenco regular de una serie emitida por una cadena nacional estadounidense. Años después, llevó esa misma honestidad y visibilidad a su papel como el Dr. Hugh Culber en “Star Trek: Discovery,” ayudando a ofrecer al público LGBTQ+ una representación más plena y humana.

Su impacto va mucho más allá de la actuación. Durante décadas, Cruz ha utilizado su plataforma para defender a las comunidades LGBTQ+. Entre otras funciones, fue portavoz nacional de GLAAD, miembro de la junta directiva de Glisten (entonces conocida como GLSEN) y organizador de campo para la organización que hoy se conoce como National LGBTQ Task Force.

Esa historia importa. La visibilidad tiene que ver con ser visto, claro, pero también con hacerle el camino un poco más fácil a la siguiente persona.

For , PFLAG LA is celebrating actor and advocate Wilson Cruz, whose career has helped make more room for LGBTQ+ and Latine people on screen.

When Cruz appeared as Rickie Vasquez on “My So-Called Life” in 1994, TV audiences saw something they had rarely—if ever—seen before: an openly gay actor playing an openly gay series regular on network TV. He later brought that same honesty and visibility to Dr. Hugh Culber on “Star Trek: Discovery,” helping give LGBTQ+ viewers a fuller, more human kind of representation.

His impact reaches well beyond acting. For decades, Cruz has used his platform to stand up for LGBTQ+ communities, including as a national spokesperson for GLAAD, a board member of Glisten (then known as GLSEN), and a field organizer for what is now the National LGBTQ Task Force.

That history matters. Visibility is about being seen, of course—but it is also about making it easier for the next person to step forward.

Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, PFLAG LA honra a Bamby Salcedo, activista trans latina cuyo trabajo ha ampliado la visibilidad, el apoyo y las oportunidades para las comunidades trans en Los Ángeles y en otras partes.

Como presidenta y directora ejecutiva de TransLatin@ Coalition, Salcedo ha ayudado a crear servicios, espacios comunitarios y esfuerzos de defensa centrados en las latinas trans, abordando temas como la inmigración, la salud, el VIH, la prevención de la violencia, el encarcelamiento y las oportunidades económicas.

Su trabajo demuestra cómo se ve el liderazgo comunitario: crear recursos, fortalecer el poder colectivo y asegurar que las personas trans sean escuchadas en las decisiones que afectan sus vidas.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, PFLAG LA honors Bamby Salcedo, a transgender Latina activist whose work has expanded visibility, support, and opportunity for trans communities in Los Angeles and beyond.

As president and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition, Salcedo has helped build advocacy, services, and community spaces centered on transgender Latinas while addressing issues including immigration, health care, HIV, violence prevention, incarceration, and economic opportunity.

Her work shows what community leadership can look like: creating resources, building power, and ensuring transgender people are heard in the decisions that affect their lives.
