For Transgender History Month, PFLAG LA honors Cecilia Chung, a pioneering transgender and HIV/AIDS advocate whose work has advanced health, dignity, and equality for transgender people, especially trans women of color.

Chung helped organize San Francisco’s Trans March, served on the city’s Transgender Discrimination Task Force, and became the first deputy director of the Transgender Law Center.

She has also brought her lived experience to public health and policy, helping ensure transgender communities have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

Chung's work has helped create greater visibility, access, and community for generations of transgender people who followed.

For Transgender History Month, PFLAG LA honors Lou Sullivan, a pioneering gay transgender man whose writing and activism helped expand how people understood gender identity and sexual orientation.

Sullivan challenged the medical establishment’s assumption that trans men couldn't be gay and worked to educate medical professionals about the experiences of gay trans men.

He also helped build and connect the transmasculine community, founded the organization now known as FTM International, and was a founding member of the GLBT Historical Society.

His work helped create greater visibility, understanding, and community for generations of trans people who followed.

Every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported at school.

PFLAG Los Angeles is speaking out against H.R. 2616, a federal bill that would require parental consent before schools could recognize a student's affirmed name or pronouns and would restrict federally funded schools from providing instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation.

Schools work best when families and educators can partner to support students—not when fear and political interference get in the way.

As our President, Farrah Dodes, said:

"Schools should be places where every student can focus on learning, knowing they will be treated with dignity and respect."

We urge lawmakers to reject policies that isolate transgender and gender expansive youth and instead support solutions that strengthen student well-being, family engagement, and safe learning environments for every child.
