Park equity in Northeast LA means longtime residents who lived through decades of railyard pollution can thrive in place and enjoy the 100 acres of green space emerging at Taylor Yard.

In case you missed it, the Bowtie Community Welcome Day marked a major milestone for Northeast LA: a 3.2-acre parcel of a former industrial railyard, remediated and on its way to becoming a thriving wetland and public park along the LA River in Glassell Park.

Spearheaded by , in partnership with , the event celebrated the near completion of the Bowtie Wetland Demonstration.

The speakers highlighted how the project’s progress was driven by key partnerships, public investment, and community engagement.

But we must also confront the risk that new parks could lead to higher costs of living, threatening to displace the very people who fought for the parks in the first place.

A resident from Northeast LA (NELA) put it plainly in the first Progress Report on the Taylor Yard Equity Strategy (TYES): “Now the land is going to be cleaned up; does that mean we can stay here?”

That question sits at the heart of the Taylor Yard Equity Strategy (TYES).

Together with , , and a coalition of nonprofits and community organizations, TYES champions NELA’s vision for parks to prevent displacement, create local opportunities, honor the region’s diverse cultures, and uplift efforts to ensure that longtime residents and legacy businesses can remain rooted and thrive in place.

🌳Cien acres de nuevos parques llegarán al noreste de Los Ángeles (NELA). Es una oportunidad increíble no solo para contar con más espacios verdes abiertos, sino también para la limpieza ambiental de un área contaminada que ha permanecido a lo largo del Río LA durante décadas. 🍃

Pero también sabemos que nuevas inversiones pueden generar riesgo de desplazamiento y cambiar el carácter de las comunidades locales.

Por eso existe la Estrategia de Equidad de Taylor Yard (TYES): para trabajar junto a las vibrantes comunidades que por generaciones han vivido en NELA, su hogar, y crear un marco que permita enfrentar cuidadosamente los posibles impactos de esta transformación. 🙏🏾

👀 Esta instantánea de la fuerza laboral de NELA se basa en la investigación del Instituto de Medio Ambiente y Sostenibilidad de la UCLA, utilizando la encuesta quinquenal ACS de 2019 y otras fuentes. Sin duda, la COVID-19 ha influido en muchas de estas tendencias.

🌳A hundred acres of new parkland is coming to Northeast LA (NELA). It’s an incredible opportunity not only for more open green space, but for the environmental cleanup of a polluted area that has sat along the LA River for decades.

But we also know that new investment can risk displacement and change the character of local communities. 🍃

That’s why the Taylor Yard Equity Strategy (TYES) exists: to work alongside the vibrant communities that have long called NELA home and build a framework for navigating the potential impacts. 🙏🏾

👀This snapshot of NELA’s workforce is based on research by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, using the 2019 ACS 5-Year Survey and other sources. COVID-19 has undoubtedly impacted many of these trends.

🏘️🌿 Grandes victorias de vivienda en el Noreste de Los Ángeles (NELA)

En 2025, el Noreste de Los Ángeles logró avances reales y concretos contra el desplazamiento por medio de la organización comunitaria y el financiamiento con enfoque en la equidad y el liderazgo local.

Estos logros incluyen:

• Cypress Park (Avria): 5 viviendas estabilizadas con rentas 30–60% por debajo del mercado, preservadas gracias a la creación de una nueva unidad adicional.

• Lincoln Heights (Hancock): Estabilidad y asequibilidad aseguradas para 13 residentes, incluida una familia que ha vivido en el vecindario toda su vida.

• Glassell Park (Chapman): 12 hogares preservados, protegiendo a más de 40 personas y deteniendo desalojos tipo “cash-for-keys” (efectivo por llaves).

• Chinatown (Hillside Villa): Inquilinos ganaron una lucha histórica para lograr alquileres accesibles para la próxima década y reducir las deudas acumuladas de renta.
