We highly recommend you check out the most recent edition of Esquire, or check out the article on their website. Stay tuned for more updates from the Foundation, coming soon!

“I feel incredibly moved by what the musicians brought and how it all came together, and by everyone’s responses. I feel like something magical happened on stage [at the premiere] and it felt like a group effort. It felt like a vulnerable process that felt very safe in the hands of the musicians, in the hands of the whole Foundation, and the beautiful energy that the SGF brings that empowers me to take risks, to be brave, and to explore something.” — Julia Moss, on the premiere of “(Please Don’t) Look Away”

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra on a brilliant premiere, and to Julia Moss for crafting such a beautiful piece for the Sarah Gibson Foundation’s first commission!

“I prefer living in color” as performed at the Tanglewood Music Center on August 5, 2018, when Sarah Gibson was a Composition Fellow. Sarah’s program note for the piece reads as follows:

“I prefer living in color” is inspired by David Hockney’s Snails Space, a gigantic painted landscape of shapes with a shifting light installation created to represent Los Angeles’s Mulholland Drive. This vivacious artwork impacted the melodic structure and energy in my piece. Beginning with a lyrical melody and morphing to a rock band-like groove, I was imagining the many vibrant colors of Hockney’s painting shifting in and out of foreground and background. These musical structures represent both the changing landscapes in Hockney’s painting and also the energizing curves and changing views found along Mulholland Drive.”
