Peter was surrendered from a pig farm at just five weeks old, escaping a devastating and short future. Today, he spends his days rooting through the earth, enjoying mud baths, and sharing a home with his rescued sister, Maggie.

Eliz the chicken’s story could have ended very differently, too. He was rescued from a truck bound for slaughter and now lives safely alongside other rescued birds, free to forage, rest, bathe, and simply be.

With support from Lady Freethinker, Bali Farm Sanctuary is giving rescued farmed animals what most will never experience: the freedom to simply exist in peace.

The sanctuary is helping change hearts and minds by showing the world that farmed animals are individuals with unique personalities, deserving of compassion, respect, and a life free from exploitation.

For nearly two weeks, Prieta’s family had no idea where their beloved dog had gone. Then came an incredible rescue.

After a 911 caller spotted the little dog swimming into San Francisco Bay, firefighters from Menlo Park and Redwood City launched a coordinated rescue involving drones, boats, and an airboat to reach her.

About half a mile from shore, rescuers safely pulled the exhausted pup from the water, wrapped her in warm towels and brought her back to land. The local SPCA then identified Prieta and reunited her with the family who had been searching for her since the 4th of July weekend.

A huge thank you to the firefighters, police, SPCA staff and everyone who worked together to bring Prieta safely home.

Three rare reptiles found only in South Florida have officially gained protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

The Key ring-necked snake, the rim rock crowned snake, and the Florida Keys mole skink all face growing threats from habitat loss, development, rising seas, and stronger storms. Scientists don’t even know exactly how many remain, as these tiny reptiles spend much of their lives hidden beneath leaf litter, loose sand, and limestone.

Federal protection won’t solve every challenge these species face, but it provides stronger safeguards and an important path toward recovery.

Every species plays a role in its ecosystem, and protecting habitats today helps ensure these unique animals remain part of Florida’s wildlife for generations to come.

Nearly 2,000 endangered long-tailed macaques could soon be exported from Indonesia for use in laboratory research and testing.

These intelligent, social animals face being captured from the wild, separated from their families, confined in breeding facilities, and ultimately shipped overseas to endure painful experiments involving repeated restraint, painful procedures, and toxicity testing.

Indonesia has already established a new facility capable of holding around 4,000 macaques, while reports indicate that people are being offered money to hand over wild monkeys, creating a financial incentive to remove them from their natural habitat.

Human-macaque conflict should be addressed through humane coexistence measures, not by supplying these sentient beings to the international laboratory trade.

Please sign our petition (in the first comment) urging Indonesian authorities to halt macaque exports and the capture of wild monkeys for commercial breeding, strengthen legal protections and support modern, non-animal research methods.

Behind the beauty of Sri Lanka’s festivals and tourist attractions is a cruel, hidden reality for many elephants.

Lady Freethinker’s investigation revealed the majestic animals suffering in captivity, including being chained for hours, deprived of the ability to roam freely, and forced to participate in loud celebrations.

These intelligent, sensitive animals are highly social and need space to move, forage, and interact with others. Instead, many are confined and exploited for human enjoyment.

These animals deserve compassion and freedom, not a lifetime of suffering.

Two young puppy sisters rescued from war-torn Ukraine are now safe, healthy and receiving the care they deserve at a Lady Freethinker-sponsored shelter — thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

The puppies were rescued just as an air-raid siren sounded and heavy rain began to fall. They were safely transported to Fluffy Pants shelter, where they received veterinary care, vaccinations, parasite treatment, nutritious food and a warm place to rest.

Through our partnership with Dobri Vchynky Razom, Lady Freethinker is also helping provide doghouses for families caring for animals during the war, as well as improving the shelter with new facilities for dogs and cats.

Thank you to everyone who makes this lifesaving work possible. Together, we’re giving vulnerable animals hope, safety, and a second chance.

Great news for animals! Illinois has expanded its ban on traveling acts from only protecting elephants to now including big cats, bears, nonhuman primates, and their hybrids, protecting more animals from exploitation in circuses, fairs, carnivals and other traveling shows.

The move comes after disturbing reports of capuchin monkeys being dressed in children’s clothing and tethered to dogs’ backs during races at an Illinois fair.

While exemptions remain for some permanent facilities, this is an important step toward ending the use of wild animals as entertainment.

Lady Freethinker applauds Illinois for putting compassion before spectacle and hopes other states will follow.

Four pugs and a turtle are safe thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of Phoenix first responders.

When a mobile home caught fire, a police officer rushed toward the smoke, helping firefighters before using an axe to force his way inside the burning home to search for anyone trapped. Firefighters soon discovered four frightened pugs and a turtle and carried each animal to safety.

Thankfully, no people or animals were seriously injured and all of the rescued animals are expected to make a full recovery.

Lady Freethinker is grateful to the Phoenix police officers and firefighters whose courage and compassion turned a terrifying emergency into a happy ending.

Florida has strengthened protections for companion animals with an expansion of Dexter’s Law, named after Dexter, a poor, sweet bulldog whose heartbreaking decapitation helped inspire change.

The new law expands Florida’s public animal abuser registry, making it easier to identify people convicted of animal cruelty, while also introducing stronger protections of animals sold through pet dealers by requiring greater transparency about an animal’s health and giving consumers clearer rights if an animal is sold sick.

While no law can undo what happened to Dexter, and while we at Lady Freethinker will always oppose pet sales, stronger accountability can help protect other animals from suffering.

For another action to strengthen public accountability for animal abuse, please sign our petition at the bottom of our featured article, urging Congress to pass the LEASH Act and create a national animal abuser database.
