Dogs in Indonesia are being kept in cramped and filthy cages, underfed, and denied basic veterinary care — forced to breed over and over again for profit.

Investigations by Lady Freethinker and Jakarta Animal Aid Network have exposed widespread cruelty inside unregulated puppy mills, where puppies are often sold without vaccinations, putting them – and people – at risk for deadly diseases.

This growing industry operates with little oversight, allowing suffering to continue unchecked.

But this can, and must, change. Strong national standards could protect dogs, prevent disease, and end this exploitation.

A cat named Ginger was allegedly stolen from his porch, restrained, and cruelly shaved while being mocked by children filming the ordeal for Snapchat.

Nearly a week later, his body was returned, placed in a trash can, wrapped in a towel, with bruises and cuts.

The fear and suffering this defenseless cat endured is unimaginable. This was not a mistake — it was deliberate cruelty.

Yet one of the juveniles is reportedly facing only a minor theft charge. That is not enough.

Lady Freethinker has sent urgent funding to care for dogs and cats rescued from an alleged online fake rescue scam in Uganda, where dozens of animals were found suffering from malnutrition, parasites, infections, injuries, and other serious health conditions.

Animal Welfare Alliance Uganda (AWAU), working with local authorities and veterinary groups, took custody of and relocated 52 dogs and six cats from two locations in Mityana to emergency shelters elsewhere in Uganda, according to AWAU. Police arrested Owen Godfrey Membe, who now faces animal cruelty charges.

The rescued animals, who are now considered evidence, are being monitored, quarantined, and cared for by AWAU and their veterinary team with support from Lady Freethinker. German nonprofit Welttierschutzgesellschaft (WTG) has supported the effort, as well.

Lady Freethinker is grateful to everyone who worked to achieve this landmark arrest and rescue, and will continue working to help protect animals from suffering both online and off.

No one should have to choose between a safe place to sleep and their companion.

In Anchorage, Alaska, two city-run shelters now welcome people with their animals — helping remove a major barrier that has long kept many unhoused individuals on the streets.

Research shows companion animals provide comfort, stability, and emotional support — and animal-friendly shelters can even help people transition into permanent housing.

This should be the standard everywhere.

Two more individuals have pleaded guilty in cases involving the horrific torture of monkeys.

According to prosecutors, both admitted to helping create, fund, and distribute “animal crush” videos depicting extreme abuse — including the torture of baby monkeys — shared through online networks.

These cases are part of a growing global crackdown on monkey torture rings, first exposed through investigations by Lady Freethinker and Action for Primates in 2021.

While nothing can undo the suffering these animals endured, every prosecution is a step toward dismantling these networks and holding perpetrators accountable.

Even in the midst of war, compassion still finds a way.

Ukrainian troops used a drone to rescue a stranded dog and cat from the front line — flying them roughly 7.5 miles to safety after realizing they couldn’t leave them behind.

The animals, who had been living alongside soldiers, were carefully secured and transported out of the danger zone. Today, they are safe, stable, and have been rehomed.

We’re grateful to those who chose to protect these vulnerable lives.

The world’s largest frog is in trouble.

The Goliath frog — found only in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea — can grow over a foot long and weigh more than six pounds. But despite its size, this remarkable species is at risk of disappearing due to deforestation, hunting, pollution, and other human pressures.

These frogs play an important role in their ecosystem, helping to control crop-damaging insects and keeping waterways clean. Losing them would have serious ripple effects.

Conservationists are now working to protect remaining populations through research, habitat protection, and community engagement, offering hope that this incredible species can recover.

To mark World Veterinary Day, Lady Freethinker and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) brought free spay and neuter care directly to some of Jakarta’s most underserved communities through our mobile veterinary clinic.

In just one weekend, over 100 cats received sterilizations and treatment, helping prevent countless more from being born into hardship.

Every sterilization prevents future suffering, reduces overpopulation humanely and supports communities with limited resources.

Through this mobile clinic, animals who once had no access to care are now receiving lifesaving treatment, vaccinations, and support — every single day.

None of this would be possible without you.

Lady Freethinker joined a global coalition of more than 80 organizations to protest outside the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, demanding an end to the mass killing of dogs in Morocco ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

Millions of dogs are at risk — with reports of shooting, poisoning, and brutal capture methods used to “cleanse” the streets. Verified footage shows terrified dogs being pinned, dragged, and thrown into trucks as they cry out in pain.

This cruelty is unacceptable. FIFA cannot ignore the suffering tied to its own event.

We are calling for humane, science-based solutions like spay/neuter programs — not mass slaughter.

After a lifetime of experiments, many animals are simply killed — never knowing comfort, freedom, or love.
Dogs, cats, and countless other animals in U.S. labs endure isolation, painful procedures, and exposure to toxic substances. When the testing ends, their lives often do too.

A bipartisan bill could change that. The AFTER Act would require federal agencies to retire healthy lab animals to shelters, sanctuaries, or adoptive homes — giving them a second chance at life.

Millions of animals are used in research every year, and they deserve more than a life of suffering.
