Thousands of primates — including monkeys, lemurs, and even apes — are suffering in captivity across the United States right now. These highly intelligent, social animals are being kept as “pets,” often confined to tiny cages, deprived of companionship, mental stimulation, and the freedom they need to thrive.

Many are torn from their mothers as babies or bred in backyards for profit. Others are passed around in the exotic pet trade, used as entertainment props, or end up living lonely, miserable lives behind closed doors.
This must stop.

The Captive Primate Safety Act of 2025 — a newly reintroduced federal bill — would make it illegal to privately own, breed, or sell nonhuman primates across state lines. If passed, this bill will protect primates from cruelty and help keep people safe, too.

Too weak to move, severely emaciated, and crying out in pain, a dog named Rocky was found discarded inside a trash bag filled with waste beside a road in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Rocky appeared to have suffered prolonged starvation. His body condition score was reportedly just 1 out of 9, meaning he had almost no body fat remaining, with severe muscle loss clearly visible.

It’s heartbreaking to imagine how long this innocent dog may have suffered before someone found him.

Thankfully, Rocky is now receiving treatment and GoodBoy Dog Recovery is offering a $3,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Rocky deserves justice. Please sign our petition in the first comment urging the Pennsylvania SPCA to thoroughly investigate this horrific case.

Join us for a screening of Cruelty for Clicks at the La Femme International Film Festival at the Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria!

Directed by multi-award-winning filmmaker Kirk Murray and produced by Lady Freethinker founder Nina Jackel, our documentary delves into the disturbing world of animal cruelty created for social media — from staged “rescues” to horrific abuse and torture designed to generate views and profit.

But the film is also about the fight to stop it: the advocates tracking down perpetrators, the struggle to get platforms to act, and the efforts to strengthen laws and hold those responsible accountable.

Cruelty for Clicks has already been making an impact on the festival circuit, receiving Audience Award - Best Documentary at Indiewood and an Honorary Award at the Activists Without Borders Film Festival. We’re thrilled to now bring it to La Femme.

Dogs trapped in puppy mills often spend their lives confined to cramped cages, denied exercise, socialization, and even the most basic humane care while being bred over and over again for profit.

A new federal bill, the Puppy Protection Act, could help strengthen protections for dogs in breeding facilities by requiring larger enclosures, daily social interaction, outdoor exercise access, and limits on how often dogs can be bred. It would also ban the use of stacked cages.

While Lady Freethinker will always oppose puppy mills and the commercial breeding of animals, this legislation would still mark an important step forward in reducing suffering for countless dogs trapped in these operations.

Progress for animals in laboratories!

Hundreds of nonhuman primates and more than one million horseshoe crabs could be spared from drug testing each year, thanks to new federal efforts to reduce the use of animals in research.

More than twenty actions are underway across federal agencies, including an FDA rule making clear that drug developers can use validated methods such as human cells, organs-on-chips, and computer models.

Other encouraging developments include the closure of the NIH’s last in-house beagle lab, new funding to help retire or rehome research animals, efforts to place healthy primates in permanent sanctuaries, and more than $88 million invested in biomedical research infrastructure.

This is all great progress, but animals can still be used in testing under the updated rules. Lady Freethinker will, of course, continue advocating for humane, human-based research until animals are no longer used for experiments.

Animals in puppy mills, roadside zoos, aquariums, and labs are suffering — denied vet care, clean water, and even basic shelter.

The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was created to protect them, but weak enforcement means countless abusers escape accountability.

The Better Collaboration, Accountability, and Regulatory Enforcement (CARE) for Animals Act could change that. This bill would clarify and strengthen the ability of the U.S. Department of Justice to shut down abusers, revoke licenses, impose penalties, and rescue suffering animals.

Sign our petition (link in first comment) urging Congress to pass the Better CARE for Animals Act and finally give animals the protection they deserve.

A man who tortured cats to raise money from people who believed they were helping sick animals has received the strongest ever animal abuse sentence in Virginia.

Rodney Travis Jr. pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and computer fraud charges and was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Travis adopted cats from shelters and then subjected them to horrific abuse, including stomping on their heads and injecting them with sedatives. He then posted images of their injuries online, falsely claiming the cats had cancer and soliciting donations for their care. Prosecutors said he collected more than $400,000 through doing this.

Thankfully, one survivor, Sisu, recovered from multiple fractures and is now doing well in a new and loving home.

Lady Freethinker thanks everyone who signed our petition demanding justice, the advocates who helped expose the scheme, and the officials who prosecuted this horrific cruelty.

This case is a terrible reminder of the dangers of fake animal rescue content online. Before donating, please always research whether a person or organization is legitimate, and never engage with suspected animal abuse content. Report it to us instead via reportposts.org.

A one-month-old kitten was reportedly grabbed and thrown from a fourth-floor balcony into busy traffic during an argument in Florida. Officers responding to the same incident also found a young woman with two black eyes and a laceration on her neck.

It’s a devastating example of why the relationship between animal cruelty and violence against people deserves serious attention.

The AVERT Future Violence Act was introduced to direct the U.S. Department of Justice to study animal cruelty and its relationship to future interpersonal violence, including risk factors and opportunities for earlier intervention.

Animals who are abused, tortured, neglected, or abandoned need their suffering to be taken seriously. Better understanding patterns of violence could also help authorities and communities identify danger and intervene earlier.

Trek was chained to an SUV and dragged behind it while he was still alive. Now, the man responsible has received the maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Before the horrific dragging, the Rottweiler had reportedly been left outside for hours as temperatures climbed well into the 90s. Instead of getting Trek help, Tracy McKee drove away with him still chained to the vehicle before abandoning him in a vacant gravel lot.

Good Samaritans who saw security footage of the incident rushed to find Trek, while Gateway Pet Guardians helped secure emergency veterinary care. Tragically, his injuries were just too severe and he died the following day.

Nothing can undo Trek’s horrific suffering or bring him back, but we are grateful to the Good Samaritans, rescuers, veterinarians, investigators, and everyone who worked to ensure his case was taken seriously and accountability was served.

Just one day after being adopted, a dog named Dexter was found decapitated and discarded in a plastic bag in Florida.

Dexter’s horrific death inspired the introduction of the LEASH Act, a bill that would create a nationwide, publicly accessible database of people convicted of felony animal cruelty. The goal is to help shelters and rescues identify known abusers before they can obtain another animal, and to strengthen accountability for serious cruelty offenses.

Animal cruelty is often linked to other forms of violence, and vulnerable animals deserve better protection.
