Charley is back for Day 2 of the California Department of Water Resources workshop on the updated California Water Plan, and today’s focus is urgency.

SCWC is raising an important question: How do we take California’s water plans and actually put them into action?

That means addressing regulatory reform, streamlining permitting and creating a process that is predictable and achievable. It also means showing Californians how we plan to solve our water challenges, not just study them.

The path forward requires bringing people together, turning plans into action and making water the priority it needs to be for California’s future.

More than 80 participants with a variety of expertise came together to tackle a critical question: How do we create a water plan for California’s future that is truly actionable?

The conversations focused on turning ideas into policies, procedures and programs that can deliver real benefits for people and communities across California.

This is what collaboration looks like. Diverse perspectives, thoughtful discussion and a shared commitment to solving the water challenges ahead.

𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

SCWC is proud to recognize Founding Member Los Angeles Department of Water & Power for the completion of the North Hollywood Central and North Hollywood West Groundwater Treatment Facilities.

The new facilities use advanced treatment technology to restore contaminated groundwater and return it to Los Angeles’ drinking water system, helping strengthen local supplies and reduce dependence on imported water. Together, the two facilities can restore up to 43 million gallons of groundwater every day.

This is what building a more resilient water future looks like: investing in infrastructure, diversifying our water supplies and putting innovative solutions to work for the communities we serve.

Congratulations to LADWP and all of the local, state and federal partners who helped bring this important project across the finish line.

“𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱.”

That’s the headline of a recent Washington Post opinion from Jim Madaffer, Vice Chair of the Colorado River Board of California, and it continues a conversation we recently explored on SCWC’s What Matters Water TV & Podcast.

In Episode 30, “The Colorado River Reckoning,” leaders representing the Upper Basin, Arizona, Utah and Southern California confronted the difficult reality of a river under unprecedented pressure from prolonged drought, competing demands and an uncertain future.

The Washington Post piece asks what comes next: What if we focused not only on dividing a shrinking supply, but on creating and conserving more water?

It points to advanced water recycling, desalination, agricultural conservation and infrastructure investments as opportunities to reduce pressure on the Colorado River while strengthening water reliability throughout the Lower Basin.

That idea reinforces a larger theme from our Colorado River conversation: there is no single solution. The future will require innovation, investment, collaboration and difficult decisions across state lines.

We can’t control the Colorado River’s hydrology. We can control how creatively and collaboratively we respond to it.

𝗦𝗖𝗪𝗖 𝗤𝟯 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽: 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The latest Southern California Water Coalition Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon brought water leaders together to focus on what comes next for California.

At the Board meeting, SCWC Executive Director Charley Wilson outlined plans for a Water Urgency Declaration, a unified roadmap for engaging California’s next generation of policymakers on the investments, actions and reforms needed to strengthen our water future. Facilitator Dan Speicher also shared the framework for SCWC’s invitation-only Water Urgency Declaration Roundtable this October.

We also welcomed Joel Metzger and Henry DeBey of the California Department of Water Resources for a discussion on California Water Plan 2028 and the state’s goal of identifying 9 million acre-feet of additional water supply, conservation or storage capacity by 2040.

These conversations are why we gather each quarter: to bring diverse voices together, ask important questions and turn collaboration into action.
