Through the Altadena Reciprocity Project, Angel City Lumber founder Jeff Perry and his team have saved more than 1,000 trees and established a local sawmill that transforms salvaged wood into finish-grade lumber that can be used for flooring, molding, cabinet fronts, trim, and other details in rebuilt homes. 🪵

Recently, a new episode of the audio documentary series Nature, Incorporated shared the behind the scenes of this project and the people working to ensure that pieces of Altadena's landscape can remain part of the community.

"Trees are a gift, from germination through death. And we can continue to utilize the gift of wood from these trees, or we can squander that gift, which I believe is very disrespectful," says Perry.

The lumber is available exclusively to Altadena residents at below-market prices, and the project is estimated to potentially produce enough material to support as many as 500 homes 🏡

After relocating nearly 15 times since losing their home in the Eaton Fire, Nicole and Michael Wirth are finally back where they belong...HOME 🏡

From living in a camper at an RV park to a 400 sqft rental backhouse, the road home wasn't easy and they had every reason to leave rebuilding behind, but they chose to stay and invest in the community they love.

Their housewarming was filled with loving neighbors, flowers, tacos, and a special remarks from the staff from Rebuild Altadena and State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, D-Pasadena, serving as a reminder that every family returning home is another step forward for Altadena 🫂

"As grateful as we are, we also recognize that our experience has been shaped by privileges. We were fortunate to have strong support, clearly, from all the people that are here today, from family, friends, neighbors and the community that rallied around us," said Nicole Wirth.

After losing their home in the Eaton Fire, Linda and Gary Zeigler are officially rebuilding 🏡💛

Surrounded by family, friends, neighbors, and supporters, the groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction and a celebration of community. The rebuild was made possible through a partnership between HPP Cares , the Rebuild Center, The Home Depot Foundation , and Lakers legend A.C. Green.

As more rebuilding projects get underway across Altadena, each groundbreaking represents another step toward restoring the community so many call home.

We're cheering on the Zeigler family and every family continuing their journey home. 🫂

Recovery is creating opportunity 👷‍♀️

According to a new report from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), rebuilding efforts following the January 2025 wildfires are helping drive construction job growth across Los Angeles County. Construction added 2,300 jobs in May, while job postings in the industry increased 45% compared to this time last year.

While nothing can replace what was lost in the fires, every home rebuilt represents work for local crews, contractors, and businesses, helping fuel economic recovery across Altadena, Pacific Palisades, and beyond.

For the past year, Kim has done more than document recovery, she's been part of it. 💛

From community events and volunteer days to local businesses, hikes, and rebuilding sites, she's spent countless hours listening to stories, meeting neighbors, and capturing the moments that often go unseen.

As she reflects on her journey, one message stands above the rest: the work isn't over. Our communities still need us to keep showing up and being good neighbors.

This year’s Juneteenth celebration in Altadena brought the community together to celebrate freedom while honoring the rich Black history that has helped shape the community for generations ❤️🖤💚

Hosted by the Altadena Historical Society (Altadena Historical Society), the day featured powerful performances, shared meals, community art, and heartfelt recognition of the people and stories that continue to define Altadena ✊🏾

After such a challenging year, this gathering was more than a celebration. It was a reminder that preserving Altadena’s history is also an investment in its future 🫂

An important recovery update for Los Angeles fire survivors 📢

Following a request from Governor Gavin Newsom and advocacy from local leaders and community partners, FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved an extension of critical disaster assistance for eligible Los Angeles fire survivors.

The extension allows eligible homeowners to continue receiving housing assistance through July 2027, while eligible renters will have additional support through October 2026, giving more families the time and resources they need as they continue rebuilding.

We'll continue sharing important updates and resources to help keep you informed throughout the recovery process 💛

For photographer and artist , wildfires have long been a subject of his work for many years. But after the Eaton Fire destroyed both his home and studio, the story became deeply personal 🫂

Having spent much of his career photographing fire, from wildfires to controlled burns and explosions, Kevin suddenly found himself on the other side of the camera, navigating the very thing he had long explored through his art.

Through the upcoming documentary "Burnt", Kevin is sharing his story in hopes that audiences look beyond one person's experience and reflect on the broader impact of climate change on communities across California and around the world 💛
