Details offer a direct insight into how a studio thinks.

Our workspace is intentionally shaped to support a mode of practice that is precise, iterative, and deeply collaborative. Models, drawings, and material studies circulate continuously - tested, discussed, and refined through ongoing dialogue.

Here, the environment is not separate from the design process; it is an active participant in it. The space itself becomes a medium through which ideas evolve, carrying them from initial exploration toward their eventual realization in built form.

Rosecrans Apartments is a thoughtfully conceived affordable mixed-use development in Compton, designed to introduce greater residential density while maintaining a strong connection to its surrounding neighborhood fabric.

The project brings together residential and commercial uses in a cohesive framework, enriched by carefully integrated open and communal spaces that foster interaction and a sense of community. Its emphasis on walkability and proximity to transit supports a more connected and accessible urban lifestyle.

Overall, Rosecrans Apartments reflects a considered approach to contemporary housing - one that balances density with livability, and aligns architectural scale with the broader goals of urban integration and neighborhood continuity.

Caglar Gokbulut is the Studio Director at City Design Studio, leading projects that require clarity across scales - from strategic urban frameworks to architectural implementation.

He is an architectural and urban designer whose work operates at the intersection of design, technology, and urban systems.

Caglar holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech and a Master in City & Technology from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, grounding his approach in both architectural rigor and urban performance.

His work has received multiple recognitions, including the Augmented & Adaptive City Award for Adaptive Neighborhood at IAAC, and the 2020 Photography Award from AIA Los Angeles.

In the public eye, architecture is sometimes reduced to what is immediately visible - form, style, and facade. Yet buildings are not simply about imagery; they are complex systems that shape movement, influence energy performance, and determine long-term value.

When design is guided primarily by appearance, performance is often diminished. By contrast, when architecture is approached as an integrated eco-system, the result is greater resilience, efficiency, and endurance.

At City Design Studio, architecture is understood as a framework for long-term performance - where design decisions are informed by how a building or urban design framework functions, adapts, and sustains value over time.

We believe in the power of โ€œTransforming Communitiesโ€ as a guiding principle that situates design as a catalyst for thoughtful revitalization and enduring renewal. We recognize that Communities are inherently layered and complex, shaped by culture, place, time and history. Transformative design empowers communities and embraces these rich complexities.

Our approach is grounded in working โ€œTogetherโ€ in close collaboration with the communities we serve - to ensure that design becomes a vehicle through which their aspirations can take form. This is an inclusive and iterative process of listening, dialogue, and negotiation, where diverse perspectives are brought into alignment and distilled into clear, coherent outcomes.

We recognize that authentic transformations unfold over time through decisions that carry spatial, social, cultural, and economic resonance. This is the foundation of our practice, to create work that is rooted in context, responsive to community, and committed to lasting impact.

Transit Oriented Development is often reduced to proximity - building near a station. In practice, it is a far more deliberate framework: one that organizes development around mobility as a fundamental principle.

At its core, it aligns density with access - concentrating growth where connectivity is strongest and ensuring that daily needs are within comfortable walking distance. In this way, transit is not treated as an alternative, but as a part of everyday life.

When thoughtfully realized, TOD reduces reliance on automobiles, enhances the efficiency of land use, and contributes to more resilient local economies. It supports patterns of living that are both connected and sustainable over time. At City Design Studio, integrating mobility is a defining framework for how we design communities to grow and thrive.

At City Design Studio, conceptualizing design begins well before considering form. It starts with understanding context: place, culture, and the aspirations of the communities who will shape and inhabit each space. Embracing the context is the foundation that informs every design decision.

Our work spans architecture, urban design, planning, and research, where concepts are advanced through an open, iterative process of dialogue, iteration and refinement. Each project becomes a synthesis of cultural, spatial, economic, and environmental forces - aligned through thoughtful collaboration.

We approach design not as a singular gesture, but as a disciplined process that balances vision with constraint, and ambition with implementation.

The goal extends beyond buildings. It is to shape places that are coherent, functional, and deeply connected - environments that contribute meaningfully and endure within the communities they serve.

Introducing one of our experiential projects: Clippers Experience Center

Designed as an immersive preview center, the project allows fans to step inside the future of the Intuit Dome before construction is complete. Through a carefully choreographed sequence of rooms, visitors engage with the Event Plaza, arena models, seating environments, and premium spaces at full scale.

The Experience Center translates architectural vision into physical experience - connecting fans, team identity, and space in advance of opening day for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Published in September 2021 deCoding Asian Urbanism explores the breathtaking urban development in Asia and examines its impact on western cities.

The decade-long effort and research are memorialized in a 458-page publication that includes the work of prominent sociologists, architects, historians, urban designers, and activists across the globe, providing a unique perspective on the complexity of the contemporary city.

Extensively illustrated with project images, analytical diagrams, maps, and selected photographs, it includes spirited panel discussions from a symposium at Harvard University.

deCoding Asian Urbanism seeks to stimulate a dialogue between policymakers, designers, and public officials who are shaping cities in todayโ€™s complex paradigm.

As migration from Asia continues worldwide and the economic connections deepen, we must navigate the potential impact of the Asian diaspora on our urban way of life, whether we live in Los Angeles, Berlin, or Sao Paulo.
