“Let the punishment fit the crime” another way of saying, only use the instruments that are required for the music.

We discuss the San Fernando Valley Symphony and the talented musicians performing at the upcoming event. We explain that while our orchestra welcomes musicians from anywhere, most of our players are experienced professionals with degrees from accredited universities who live and work in Southern California. Many pursue other vocations alongside their musical careers. For this particular performance, we’re featuring our chamber music version with highly skilled string players and keyboard, as the repertoire doesn’t require the full orchestra’s brass, woodwinds, and percussion sections. We tailor our instrumentation to match what each piece of music requires.

When conducting was dangerous - Part 4

James Domine and Charlie Kim discuss the fascinating history of choral music, starting with Gregorian chants sung by monks who needed visual guidance to follow the notes.

They talk about the role of the conductor and share the cautionary tale of Jean Baptiste Lully, who famously injured his foot while using a staff to keep the beat—an injury that led to gangrene and his death—illustrating just how crucial the conductor’s role has been throughout musical history.

John Bergquist explains the timeless Latin phrase “Ad astra per aspera” (through adversity to the stars) and how it inspired his new composition. The piece has a profound meaning about human resilience and achievement while celebrating the Artemis program’s historic accomplishments in taking humanity further than ever before, and its mission to land the first woman on the moon by the end of the decade.
