William C. Velasquez Institute

William C. Velasquez Institute Founded in 1985, WCVI is a nonprofit Latino-focused policy institute supporting elected/communityleaders with innovative research/strategies.

WCVI has offices in San Antonio, TX and Los Angeles, CA serving 10,000 leaers in 20 states. WCVI was founded in 1985 as the policy and research spin off of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project. Originally named after its mother organization Southwest Voter Research Institute gained early notoriety for excelling in Latino voter survey research and "Intermestic policy" including fighti

ng for the hallowed amnesty program in the 1986 IRCA immigration reform bill, leading Latino opposition to US intervention in Central America as well as critical Latino participation in the NAFTA debate. The creation of the $3 billion North American Development Bank whose mission was US-Mexico border environmental cleanup was a paramount outcome of SVRI's Latino Consensus on NAFTA initiatve. In 1997 anticipating its ten year anniversary SVRI changed its name to the William C. Velasquez Institute to pay homage to its iconic founder Willie Velasquez. During the past twenty years WCVI has carved its niche as the leading Latino organization in matters of climate change adaptation, ending the US embargo on Cuba, and ending the War on Drugs.. Signature WCVI victories include revitalizing the LA River, normalizing US-Cuba ties, and ending Marjuana prohibition in California. Its noteworthy that WCVI was alone among national Latino organizations in consistently advocated and educating on these three paramount issue areas since the late 1990's.

The Los Angeles County Community Resilience Center is open to help residents impacted by the Lineage Logistics warehouse fire.

As the City Terrace Park smoke respite shelter closes at noon on Saturday, June 27, my office helped coordinate the Community Resilience Center at the East Los Angeles Civic Center, creating a one-stop location where residents can access critical County programs, health services, and recovery support.

Representatives from the Department of Economic Opportunity, LA County DCBA, County of Los Angeles | DPSS, L.A. County Mental Health, and LA Health Services will be available, along with expanded mobile health services and other recovery programs for impacted residents and families.

Residents can visit the East Los Angeles Library to connect with County departments and community partners and learn more about available assistance.
