As Foster Care Awareness Month comes to a close, our hearts are full.

This month, we've witnessed the incredible strength of our community—showing up for young people in foster care, advocating for systemic change, and refusing to accept that young people should have to navigate systems alone.

A special thank you to those who became Friends of the Alliance. Your monthly gift means consistent, sustained support for young people and families—the kind of reliability that changes lives. You're not just responding to a moment. You're committing to lasting change.

If this month helped inform you on the issues children in foster care face everyday, we invite you to keep showing up. The work doesn't pause when the calendar turns. Young people in foster care need steady, reliable advocates year-round.

Foster Care Awareness Month isn't just about supporting young people in care right now—it's about transforming the systems that affect them for generations to come.

"Children deserve stability and care from the people who know and love them most. Our policy priorities this year focus on removing barriers to that stability: expanding access to education, strengthening family connections, and ensuring young people exiting the foster care system have real pathways to permanence and independence. We're investing in systemic change that protects today's youth and future generations."
— Kristin Power, VP of Policy & Advocacy

The Alliance for Children's Rights does both: we advocate for individual young people navigating the system today, and we work to reshape the system itself. Because lasting change requires both.

Become a Friend of the Alliance for just $1 a day. Your support funds advocacy that changes lives and transforms systems.

Instability in foster care can look like constant change—new placements, new schools, new uncertainty.

But consistency changes what’s possible.
With ongoing legal and social support, young people don’t have to navigate systems alone. They have someone who shows up again and again.

This Foster Care Awareness Month, help make that consistency possible.
💛 $30/month keeps an advocate by a young person’s side
💛 $1/day helps build lasting stability

“When we show up and believe in their ability to parent, we're not just changing their lives—we're breaking a cycle and creating something stronger for them and their children. We're interrupting a cycle that's been generations in the making, and creating something stronger for their children."
— Dr. Shiré Wortham, DSW, Alliance for Children's Rights

Last year, our Healthy Teen Families program supported over 250 expectant and parenting youth in care—connecting them with reproductive healthcare, childcare, and essential parenting resources. With your support, we can keep answering the call, helping young people rewrite their family's stories.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Survival Saturday: Pathway to Independence. 🕊️

As we kick off Foster Care Awareness Month, we were honored to host youth from our TAY Program for a day of growth and connection. Hearing Alexis Obinna and Dr. Lawrence Winston share their "Success" stories reminded us all why the Alliance’s mission is so vital.

Deep gratitude to our workshop partners—including JVS SoCal, Volunteers of America, and CRCD—for providing tangible resources and job opportunities to our attendees.
Community support makes these days possible. See you at the next one! 🤝

Introducing our 2026 Legislative Package

This year, we’re proud to sponsor 7 bills that strengthen placement stability, protect foster youth benefits, expand access to education, child care, and housing, and keep families together whenever safely possible.

From ensuring youth receive the Social Security benefits and other benefits they’re entitled to, to removing barriers to accessing the supports and services of extended foster care, supporting kinship placements, promoting high school completion, and expanding housing for transition aged youth — these bills move California’s child welfare system closer to one that truly centers youth well‑being, stability, and opportunity at every stage.

We’re grateful to our legislative champions and partner organizations for working alongside us to advance policies that put children, youth, caregivers, and families first.

Swipe to learn more about each bill and how they work together to build a stronger future for youth in foster care across California.

For National Volunteer Month, we are honoring the incredible pro bono partners who use their legal expertise to protect the rights of children. ⚖️ From finalizing adoptions to securing education advocacy and healthcare, our pro bono attorneys provide the "justice" in our mission. Last year, your dedication helped thousands of youth in foster care clear legal barriers to stability. Thank you for advocating for those who need it most.

This week, the Alliance for Children’s Rights and the California Alliance of Caregivers headed to Sacramento for our 10th annual Caregiver Day at the Capitol. It was a powerful day of connection, advocacy, and ensuring that the voices of those on the front lines of the foster care system are heard by our state leaders.

Caregivers from across California met with legislators to share their lived experiences and champion two critical bills that will provide stability and support for our youth:
* AB 1602 (Rubio): Creating a Child Welfare Disaster Response Fund to provide immediate financial aid for foster youth and caregivers during natural disasters.
* AB 2769 (Ahrens): Ensuring adopted youth don’t lose critical support (AAP) if they turn 18 just months before high school graduation.

A huge thank you to Angie Schwartz (CDSS) and Ginni Bella (LAO) for joining us, and to every advocate who shared their story to help build a more equitable child welfare system. Together, we are turning lived experience into lasting policy change! 🧡
