East Side Riders BC

East Side Riders BC The East Side Riders Bike Club (ESR) is an all-volunteer, grassroots bicycle club founded in 2008. E ESR was established in 2008.

The purpose of the ESR is to prevent youth from joining gangs and/or taking drugs, but also engage youth who have a desire to enrich the community through recreational activities, specifically focusing on bicycle riding. Youth have been introduced to bike safety, healthy eating and active living, the importance of giving back to the community, and are able to participate in community riding events

hosted by ESR. ESR aims to provide a comprehensive youth program that seeks to positively impact the following community needs: Inadequate Organized Recreational Outlets for local youth in the Watts area, a community that is rife with high rates of child obesity, asthma and other respiratory challenges amongst youth. This program encourages physical activity through bike riding for youth and their families; Lack of Safe Passage and Travel Routes: while Watts is a very small community, there are clear gang-related boundaries and territories that limit the movement of local youth based on where they reside; Youth Personal Development - teach local youth lifelong personal development skills based on their own self-interest, in a way that is interactive and fun. Youth learn bike safety, repair, maintenance, and design; Lack of Resources- families lack the resources to purchase bikes, safety gear, and/or other necessary equipment. This program allows local youth to learn and strengthen their physical activity skills, while developing new knowledge on health and wellness.

WHEN YOU GIVE KIDS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY, THEY WILL PLAY.

Friday night at the Nike Watts Back to School event was a powerful reminder of why investing in youth recreation and safe community spaces matters.

It was hot outside, but that didn’t stop our young people. From old-school hopscotch to football, basketball, soccer and volleyball, kids were moving, laughing, competing and connecting. Very few were sitting on the sidelines — they were PLAYING.

East Side Riders Bike Club was proud to bring 50 youth from our programs to participate and experience an evening centered around fun, physical activity and community.

This is bigger than one event. When we provide young people with safe spaces, positive activities and adults and organizations willing to invest in them, we give them more opportunities to be active, build confidence, develop friendships and simply enjoy being kids.

Thank you, Nike LA , for investing in Watts and showing what is possible when community and opportunity come together.

Our young people don’t need to be convinced to participate, sometimes they just need the opportunity. Special shoutout to TyQuan Givens for hosting and giving back to the community.

From the streets of Watts to the airwaves of Los Angeles, East Side Riders Bike Club is proud to keep our community’s stories, culture, and spirit moving forward! We had the honor of joining KJLH Radio RadioFree KJLH and the Danny Morrison Media® to share the work we’re doing and give you a glimpse of what’s ahead for our Dia de Los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) Celebration this November!

Happy National Nonprofit Day — August 17!

Today, we recognize and celebrate the incredible nonprofits and community organizations whose hard work, dedication, compassion, and commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

A special THANK YOU to all the incredible organizations, vendors, and community partners who came out on Saturday, August 15, to celebrate National Nonprofit Day with us! Your presence, support, and commitment helped make the day truly incredible and unforgettable.

From Watts and surrounding communities to neighborhoods across our nation, nonprofits are on the front lines—providing resources, creating opportunities, supporting families, empowering youth, serving those in need, and giving hope to people who need it most.

Your work may not always make the headlines, but the impact is undeniable. You are changing lives, strengthening communities, and helping build a better future—one person, one family, and one community at a time.

Thank you to every nonprofit leader, staff member, volunteer, vendor, donor, advocate, and community partner who continues to show up, serve, collaborate, and make a difference.

Together, we celebrate the power of community and the incredible work being done every day to make a difference.

Happy National Nonprofit Day!

Community is what East Side Riders represents. Our community is who we work for every single day.

We believe that when people come together through cycling, they become more than neighbors—they become family. Every ride, every program, every conversation is about building stronger connections, creating opportunities, and changing everyday challenges into meaningful outcomes.

At East Side Riders, we’re not just riding bikes. We’re building a community that looks out for one another, supports one another, and grows together. That’s what matters most.
