We hosted a special data-focused convening at our OC office in Anaheim in honor of AAPI Heritage Month.

The event featured presentations and discussions on demographic shifts, disparities within AAPI communities, civic engagement, health access, education, and the importance of disaggregated data in understanding the needs of OC’s diverse communities.

The discussion highlighted the need for stronger data infrastructure, deeper cross-sector collaboration, and greater attention to the disparities that can be hidden when AAPI communities are treated as a monolith. Speakers emphasized the importance of translating research into practical strategies that can support public agencies, community organizations, funders, and policymakers.

The event underscored the importance of preparing for future civic milestones, including the 2030 Census and redistricting process, and ensuring that AAPI communities are fully counted, engaged, and represented in decisions that shape public resources and political power.

AJSOCAL’s Demographic Research Project (DRP) continues to serve as a critical resource for community leaders, advocates, policymakers, and institutions seeking to better understand the diversity, needs, and contributions of AANHPI communities across SoCal.

Special thanks to Cal State Fullerton for their support.

A new USCIS policy memo released last week is creating understandable concern and confusion in immigrant communities.

At Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California, we want our communities to know: do not panic, be cautious about misinformation and immigration fraud, and speak with a trusted immigration attorney before making decisions about your case.

This memo relates to Adjustment of Status (AOS), an important process that allows many eligible immigrants to apply for lawful permanent residency from within the United States. While the policy language is concerning and may create additional uncertainty for many families, it does not automatically mean an immediate change to any individual case.

We are closely monitoring this development alongside legal experts and community partners and will continue sharing updates as we learn more.

This past Tuesday we celebrated AAPI Heritage Month and PRIDE with Los Angeles Blade, Okaeri: A Nikkei LGBTQ Community, West Hollywood Vice Mayor Danny Hang, and actor Nhut Le.

It was a beautiful and relaxed evening celebrating our QTAPI intersection, highlighting that both Pride and AAPI Heritage Month need to continue to be inclusive to truly represent the beauty and diversity of our communities. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Governor Newsom’s May Revision of the State Budget is a mixed bag for health access.

While there are promising savings strategies, proposed changes to Medi-Cal could make it harder for our communities to keep coverage. AJSOCAL urges serious consideration of the impact of severe cuts on the health of immigrants, older adults, people with disabilities, and the overall stability of the healthcare system.

AAPIs made the largest gains in healthcare coverage of any racial or ethnic group since the Affordable Care Act was enacted, with the uninsured rate decreasing 63% between 2010 and 2022 because AAPIs believed in the promise of the ACA: that no one should have to choose between their health and their financial security.

As the 2026-2027 budget is finalized, state leaders have the choice to preserve healthcare access by (1) seeking new, innovative revenue sources and (2) redirecting savings from one part of the Medi-Cal program toward other parts of the Medi-Cal program. We look forward to working in partnership with state leaders to continue honoring the promise of affordable healthcare in California.

The Irvine City Council hosted a certificate presentation recognizing May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, bringing together community leaders, partners, and local officials to highlight the contributions, histories, and continued impact of AANHPI communities in Irvine and across Orange County.

The proclamation was brought forward by Councilmember Melinda Liu and is scheduled to appear on the May 27 council agenda for consideration. If adopted, this would mark the first year that the City of Irvine (which is now more than 50% AAPI!) officially recognizes AANHPI Heritage Month, with the recognition continuing annually moving forward.
