As attorneys, we are often asked by family, friends, and colleagues which candidates to vote for in judicial elections. The upcoming election on November 3, 2026 is no exception in that there are several remaining contested Superior Court judicial elections here in Los Angeles County that were not decided in the primary election on June 2, 2026. The Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA), through its Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee (JEEC), prepared a report evaluating each of the Superior Court candidates.

Merlyn N. Hernandez is a solo practitioner and her practice areas include immigration, family and probate law. She is a Certified Family Law Specialist.

Hernandez represents and advocates for clients involved in immigration cases with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or the Executive Office for Immigration Review. In family law cases, she represents clients in dissolutions, legal separations, and spousal and child support. She is also appointed by the Los Angeles Superior Court to serve as minor’s counsel in family law cases and court appointed counsel in guardianship and conservatorship petitions.

From 2012-2019, Super Lawyers nominated Hernandez as a Southern California Rising Star. From 2020-2027, she has also been nominated as a Southern California Super Lawyer.

Hernandez is an active member of several organizations. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar, Family Law Section. She is Vice President of the California Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Immigration and Custom Enforcement National Liaison Committee. She is a board member of the Survivor Justice Center.

This year, nearly 150 schools are participating in the 49th Annual Los Angeles County Mock Trial Competition, bringing hundreds of middle and high school students into the courtroom to compete and put their skills to the test.

To make this experience possible, legal community volunteers are needed to preside over and score trials.
