Nationally recognized redress movement scholar and Go For Broke National Education Center president Dr. Mitch Maki explores the period starting with incarceration and military service and culminating in the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. Blending historical facts with community anecdotes and audience perspectives, Dr. Maki fosters dynamic dialogue, connecting the Japanese American soldiers’ legacy to the enduring strength of democracy.

GFBNEC President & CEO Dr. Mitch Maki gave his “Restoring America’s Promise” presentation to a rapt audience at JACL Monterey on 9/13 in the historic JACL Hall in Monterey, California. This interactive presentation on the poignant history of the Japanese American World War II experience deeply resonated with close to 50 attendees, many of whom are descendants of Japanese American World War II veterans. In fact, we were excited to see a few attendees return the following evening at the presentation to students and faculty at California State University, Monterey Bay to hear the talk again! Thanks to the Monterey JACL and CSUMB for hosting us!

The next stop will be at the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club in Oakland on October 22, the Roberto Cruz Leadership Academy in San Jose on October 23, and J-Sei in Emeryville, California, on October 24. We are grateful to the K/T Foundation for their generous support of the fall 2026 presentations of “Restoring America’s Promise.”

Hiro Nishimura, a Military Intelligence Service veteran and author of “Trials and Triumphs of the Nikkei,” spoke on the contributions of the Nisei to the Japanese American community in his 2002 Hanashi Oral History interview. He believes that the Nisei veterans and their war records were the linchpin in getting redress passed.

The Hanashi Oral History Collection is an unparalleled archive of first-person voices of the Nisei WWII veterans and their contemporaries about their experiences before, during, and after the war, shedding light on why they chose to serve their country and their hopes for future generations.
