Phone Zap for Fellow Worker Phillip Ruiz

Phillip Ruiz, a Fellow Worker from the Los Angeles GMB, was scheduled to be release from the California Institution for Men, Chino on June 21st. Despite his release date, FW Ruiz has yet to be freed.

As of today, FW Ruiz has not been informed of any charges filed against him that would cause his delayed release. However, what is known is that days prior to Ruiz’s release date, a counselor by the name of Devlin threatened Ruiz that if he did not rescind a request for an internal affairs’ investigation related to errors made in the calculation of his time served, that he would held past his release date. It has become apparent that Counselor Devlin has followed through with his threat.

We are calling on all Fellow Workers and fellow travelers to respond to this injustice. On Wednesday, July 2nd, please call the numbers listed below and demand the following:

1. The immediate release of Phillip Ruiz (ID number is V91301);
2. If any charges are pending, that Ruiz be informed of said charges;
3. An investigation into the conduct of Counselor Devlin for misconduct and misuse of power;

FW Phillip was set to be released this morning. His partner waited for his release but it never came. All inquiries indicated that he was not on the list for today. Phone calls have been made to his counselor but has yet to return the message. Please be prepared for a possible phone campaign into the prison if deemed necessary. I will update once more information becomes available.

As many of you know, FW Phillip Ruiz is a member of the local branch who has been in state prison for more than a decade. He joined while in and has been active in organizing several prison actions as part of his activities. Over the years it seems that his release date has moved around but always seems just around the corner. Well, according to current information, FW Ruiz is set to get released within the next few days. This is truly great news!
The transition to the outside world is very difficult. Not only does one need to be re-socialized, but one has to regain a sense of community. Sometimes equally as difficult is entering into the world with nothing but the clothes on your back. The local branch can help with some of these factors by ensuring that FW Ruiz has a community to step into. With love and patience, solidarity and camaraderie we can ensure his transition will be easier. In addition, we can help with funds. We can help ensure that he has clothes and food as he begins organizing in the outside world.
I am requesting that all fellow workers reach into their pockets to help FW Ruiz. At the next GMB meeting let's pass the hat and show our fellow worker what solidarity truly looks like. Let's welcome him into our community. It is the hope that he will be there in person.
