🏃‍♂️💨 Cannabis & Performance: What Does the Science Say?

More athletes are exploring cannabis—not to enhance performance artificially, but to support recovery, pain management, and mental balance. 🌿

📊 What does the data show?

• Around 26% of athletes report current cannabis use in community-based studies
• In recovery-focused surveys, up to 60% of athletes report using THC post-exercise and ~20–23% use CBD for recovery
• Scientific reviews highlight that CBD may support sleep, pain relief, and recovery, though more high-quality trials are still needed

So why are athletes interested?

💥 Pain relief & muscle recovery
🧠 Reduced anxiety → better focus under pressure
🔥 Anti-inflammatory pathways (cytokine modulation)
😴 Improved sleep = better performance

⚖️ But here’s the nuance:
Evidence is still evolving. While many athletes report benefits, clinical data on performance enhancement remains limited and mixed

👉 Translation: Cannabis may be more of a recovery tool than a performance enhancer.

At the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, we believe the future lies in evidence-based guidance, personalized dosing, and responsible use.

💬 What’s your perspective—recovery aid, performance tool, or both?

🧠🌿 Could cannabinoids help protect the brain?

Emerging research suggests that cannabinoids—including CBD and other compounds found in Cannabis sativa—may support neuroprotective processes by reducing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, two biological mechanisms associated with neuronal injury and neurodegenerative disorders.

Scientists have identified several pathways through which cannabinoids may influence brain health, including:

🔹 Modulation of inflammatory responses in the nervous system
🔹 Reduction of reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress)
🔹 Support of cellular homeostasis
🔹 Protection of neurons in experimental models of neurological injury and disease

Research published in recent years has highlighted CBD’s potential neuroprotective effects in conditions involving neuroinflammation, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative processes, although more human clinical studies are still needed.

🧠🌿 Supporting your Endocannabinoid System (ECS) doesn’t always start with cannabis—it can also start with everyday habits.

🥑 **1. Choose healthy fats**
The body produces its own cannabinoids (endocannabinoids), and many of the building blocks for these molecules come from dietary fats. Foods rich in omega-3s, seeds, olive oil, avocado, eggs, and fatty fish may help support healthy ECS function.

🚶‍♀️ **2. Move your body regularly**
Physical activity has been shown to increase levels of endocannabinoids such as anandamide, often called the “bliss molecule.” This may contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mood, stress, sleep, and overall well-being.

🌿 For people who use cannabis, these habits may help support overall ECS balance and complement a healthy lifestyle.

Small daily choices can make a big difference.

🌿 Why does cannabis produce cannabinoids?

Because survival is chemistry.

Cannabinoids like THCA and CBGA aren’t just therapeutic—they’re part of the plant’s defense system:
☀️ Shielding against UV damage
🐛 Repelling insects
🌱 Regulating growth and energy use

What we study as medicine… the plant evolved as protection.

Insights inspired by Ethan Russo’s work on cannabinoid function.

🕰️🌿 Did you know?

For nearly a century, cannabis was part of mainstream medicine in the United States. From 1850 until its removal from the U.S. Pharmacopoeia in 1942, physicians prescribed cannabis-based preparations in various forms, including tinctures, tablets, extracts, and capsules.

These products were manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and dispensed through pharmacies, much like many medications today. Historical medical literature documents their use for a variety of conditions, including pain, muscle spasms, menstrual discomfort, and neurological disorders.

🔬 Long before the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s, clinicians were already observing the therapeutic effects of cannabis in their patients.

Understanding this history helps provide important context for today’s scientific and clinical discussions about cannabinoids and patient care.

🤰🌿 Cannabis Use in Pregnancy: Context, Evidence, and Clinical Reality

How should clinicians discuss cannabis use during pregnancy when the evidence is complex, evolving, and often influenced by stigma, policy, and research limitations?

This SCC resource examines the current scientific evidence, the role of the endocannabinoid system, harm reduction considerations, and the need for patient-centered conversations that are compassionate, evidence-based, and clinically practical.

The article highlights the importance of moving beyond simplistic messaging toward a more nuanced understanding of risk, uncertainty, and real-world patient experiences.
