Despite growing up in a bland suburban ranch home in Santa Barbara, California, my love for Spanish Colonial architecture began at an early age. As I kid I would design and sketch fantasy homes inspired by my surroundings and even more specifically the Santa Barbara Courthouse. In 1925 a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city and afterwards when rebuilding began Spanish Revival architecture was officially adopted in order to give the city a more unified look and to also celebrate its Spanish Colonial and Mexican heritage, however romanticized that history may be. Exemplary elements of architecture include, but are not limited to: Smooth stucco walls, red tile roofs, cast concrete elements, porches and balconies, decorative iron trim, Roman- inspired arcades and often asymmetrical facades. Eclectic in its details, Spanish Revival architecture takes cues from many eras like Spanish Baroque, Gothic, Mission and Moorish Revival and . Ive included a few images Ive taken over the years of my hometown.

As a designer and the chairman of the Southern California Neoclassists, I have always shared a found appreciation for architecture founded by classicism. Reflecting on a downtown LA tour hosted by the LA conservancy, I admired the Bradbury building on Broadway. Erected in 1983, in the renaissance revival style, the victorian court cast a light that beautifully accentuates the intricate design. If you are a local looking to explore or in town visiting, this is a must-see historical landmark. Photography and IG story by of

Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it’s a memory.

In memoriam of Rocky Lafluer: A fabulous friend, colleague, fellow board member, and design icon Rockstar.

Rocky will be terribly missed by so many and his absence from the design community is heartbreaking. He was a gentle soul, full of so much life, humor, wit, and the list could go on.

As a mentor to countless young design professionals - many of whom continue his work within our Chapter - Rocky touched so many lives, and we are no doubt a stronger community because of him. His warmth, kindness and exuberance made those around him feel welcomed, loved and valued.

The last time I saw him we were closing out the bar with martinis at the end of one of our Culver City Hotel events. Here’s you to, Rocky! 🍸 🍸 ✨

More photos of buildings in from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. This expo is credited for bringing and popularizing the architecture in Southern California that characterizes many of our towns and neighborhoods. Although the revival craze wasn’t limited to just that as many of the buildings pictured, and seen throughout California are heavenly influenced by hybrids such as , , , , and . 🏛⛪️🕌🕍 Tjabks for the phots and content @ Balboa Park
