The Korea Foundation is pleased to support the retrospective screening series of Yun-Yuh-jung, the first Korean to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Since her debut in Kim Ki-young's Woman of Fire (1971), Youn Yuh-jung has steadfastly resisted conforming to the patriarchal norms prevalent in Korean cinema. Renowned as an iconic figure and role model, Youn's storytelling continually challenges boundaries, portraying characters with bold and forthright perception. This series celebrates the diverse works that have shaped her cinematic legacy, leaving an indelible mark on Korean cinema.

West Coast Premiere of Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s | Hammer Museum

The Korea Foundation is delighted to support the Hammer Museum in presenting Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, the 1960s–1970s, a groundbreaking exhibition dedicated to Korean Experimental art (silheommisul 실험미술) and its artists. Their radical approach to materials and processes produced some of the most significant avant-garde practices of the twentieth century. The Hammer Museum’s presentation, on view from February 11 to May 12, 2024, marks the exhibition’s first and only venue on the West Coast. Prior to the Hammer, the exhibition debuted at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (May 26–Jul 16, 2023), and traveled to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (Sep 1, 2023– Jan 7, 2024).

The exhibition will feature approximately eighty works by Ha Chong-Hyun, Jung Kangja, Kim Kulim, Lee Kang-So, Lee Kun-Yong, Lee Seung-taek, and Sung Neung Kyung. In addition to creating boundary-pushing works of art, these artists pursued exhibitions, performances, publications, and public seminars, often under the rubric of self-organized collectives.

[2024 KF Fellowship for Field Research]

The Korea Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2024 Field Research Fellowship program.

The fellowship welcomes scholars and experts in Korean studies and related fields for on-site field research in Korea, providing access to relevant resources. It is open to scholars outside of Korea conducting comparative or case studies in Korean studies or related areas in humanities or social sciences, including important new research topics closely tied to Korea.

[A New Wave of K-Cinema: Korean Women Directors | Academy Museum of Motion Pictures]

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is presenting the first Korean Women Directors Series with the support of the Korea Foundation.

This screening series opens with two works by Yim Soon-rye, a prominent director and an advocate for women in film. The films explore the complexities of diverse conditions, including the trauma of domestic violence, investigations into gender and class politics, humanity’s relation to nature and the environment, and love and friendship. Each film in the series conveys its narrative through the unique lens of its director’s keen perception, remarkable sensibility, and earnest engagement with its subject(s) for a 10-film tour through this new wave of Korean women directors.

The Korea Foundation is pleased to support the screening of the Korean documentary "Coming to You" (2021) and a Q&A with Director Byun Gyuri, and featured mothers Nabi and Vivian at Chapman University.

This documentary follows the journey of two working mothers, Nabi and Vivian, as they come to terms with their children's gay and transgender identities and transform themselves into fierce activists for LGBTQ rights in South Korea. The West Coast premiere of the film will serve as the closing event for the "Motherhood to motherhoods: Ideologies of 'The Feminine'" conference.

[2023 KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies]

The KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies program aims to foster a new generation of Korean studies scholars by supporting students currently enrolled in an M.A. or Ph.D. program in Korean studies.

Application deadline: March 15 to April 25, 2023 (18:00KST)

Eligible Applicants:
◾ M.A. or Ph.D. students currently enrolled in graduate programs at a university located outside Korea (as of September 2023) and focusing on a Korea-related topic in the humanities, social sciences, arts, or cultural studies and who do not already hold a doctorate.
◾ Hold citizenship or permanent residency status in a country outside of Korea.

Grant Amount (US):

[2023 KF Fellowship for Postdoctoral Research in North America]

The KF Fellowship for Postdoctoral Research is designed to support the full-time research of rising scholars who have recently earned a PhD in the humanities, social sciences, arts or cultural studies on a Korea-related topic at a university or research organization located in North America.

- Eligible Applicants:
◾ Have citizenship or permanent residency status in a country outside Korea (Applicants must already have obtained permanent residency status as of January 2023.)
◾ Have not been awarded a position at a university equivalent or exceeding that of a full-time lecturer or be designated as a senior researcher of a research institution
◾ Have obtained a PhD degree within the past five years
