📣 Announcing AFTERGLOW

Join us for a celebratory benefit dinner during the final weekend of 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 by Departamento del Distrito . Beginning at 5pm on October 25 in the M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard , we'll gather to share a toast to our summer programs and to generate support, together, for our next seasons. We are busy making party plans and can't wait to share details about music, goodies, food, drink, and additional sponsors. See you next month!!

Recapping our summer programs under 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 by Departamento del Distrito --thank you to all who gathered with us in the checkered shade, cooled by a clean energy-powered breeze 🍃

1-2: During our first program of the summer, a roundtable discussion titled Cultures of Resource Sovereignty, we basked in a mingling of resource-centered practices shared by Asuka Hisa (ICA LA) , Ale Lemus (Crenshaw Dairy Mart) .porvida , Debra Scacco , Departamento del Distrito , and Solarpunks .club ⚡️ We modeled material exchanges and had our first potluck picnic of the season ⛱️ Photos by Adriana Hamui .hamui

2-3: Artist and early childhood educator Jacqueline Falcone led a kids-friendly solar oven workshop, guiding participants in producing DIY cookers that harness solar light and amplify energy. S’mores were on the menu 🌞 🍫 !

4-5: Emily Russell of Function Design and Caco Peguero of United Futures provided a hands-on evening workshop of floral architectures 🌺, staged shadows, and scenic designs that transformed as the sun set. We shared hibiscus drinks and a final potluck as 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 powered a colorful evening display.

Join us this Sunday from 10am-2pm as LA Design Weekend swings through Echo Park to highlight and celebrate local design practices and spaces! The M&A Storefront space will be open for an extended viewing of 𝔗𝔯𝔞𝔡𝔢 𝔖𝔞𝔣𝔢 ℭ𝔥𝔞𝔰𝔱𝔦𝔱𝔶 𝔅𝔬𝔵. Artists Strat Coffman and Adam Miller will be on-site to lead walkthroughs and answer questions. And we'll be sharing an offering of morning treats and espresso martinis 🍩🍸🫘

Hi friends—we are writing a week into demonstrations across Tovaangar that celebrate and protect the indelible immigrant character of this city. Immigrants are us. At every scale—from our team here at M&A to our collaborators, our publics small and big, our neighbors across this region—most of us and our families are from elsewhere. The nuances of this simultaneously unsettled and settling condition were so poignantly called to attention by last year’s summer courtyard project, 𝒲𝑒 𝒞𝒶𝓇𝓇𝓇𝓎 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝐿𝒶𝓃𝒹, by a collective of Indigenous diaspora designers.

We’ve been working hard on this summer’s courtyard project, 𝐿𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒢𝒶𝓊𝑔𝑒 by the Mexico City-based practice Departamento del Distrito . This project, addressing topics of community resilience and resource sovereignty, reminds us that our shared concerns and our collective dreams repudiate borders. 𝐿𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒢𝒶𝓊𝑔𝑒 opens on the Summer Solstice—next weekend—and we do not want take away from a celebration of this work that’s a result of time, generosity, and much joy shared between a network of collaborators, from all over.

This synthesis of people and ideas is what drives our organization’s mission, which begins through seeing, uplifting, and caring for the communities we are a part of. Heat Aid, our summer mutual aid program, will also relaunch next weekend with a new Raid Aid dimension. As temperatures rise, we will be collecting material resources for our mutual aid partners who serve our unhoused neighbors and, with our friends at Craft Contemporary , will be raising funds for CHIRLA (The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights) .

☀️ 2025 Summer Courtyard Announcement ☀️

We are thrilled to share details about our 2025 courtyard project! 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 by the international design and research practice Departamento del Distrito will function as a zone of performance, encounter, and cooling, mediated by two photovoltaic space frames that levitate above the M&A x Craft Contemporary courtyard. Working with the courtyard’s north-south axis, photovoltaic modules are arranged due south to provide shade for zones of collective occupation while generating all power required for public programming. This temporary installation will address questions surrounding energy and infrastructure here in Los Angeles, exploring the policies, technologies, and architectures that enable self-determination. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Informed by adaptable industrial systems and network thinking, 𝓛𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓖𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓮 is concerned with local strategies of renewable energy production and distribution that aim to increase the accessibility of essential resources. A cooling center serves as the installation’s primary public program. Panels provide shade. Fans generate a subtle breeze. Energy is free 🔌

📣📣📣 M&A is seeking a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Public Programs Intern to work with us during Summer 2025!

- Baby supplies
- Non-perishable food
- Tarps, tents, shades
- Flashlights

HEAT AID REOPENING & CALL FOR DONATIONS

Heat Aid at the M&A Storefront is back.
We are collecting the above materials and accepting monetary donations to our mutual aid fund @ our website (link in bio).
Weekday donation drop-offs are by appointment (please DM or email). Weekend drop-off windows will be posted soon.

So many are doing this important work right now. You can find other donation centers and mutual aid resources via the link in bio.

Heat Aid, started in 2020, is the occasional conversion of the M&A Storefront (1313 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park) into a mutual aid drop-off center and collection site. From there, we coordinate with already existing initiatives including Water Drop LA () and SELAH () to distribute these donations. As part of our immediate response to this week's wildfires, we will also run donations directly to evacuation centers per their needs.

Thank you so much for joining us under the canopy of 𝓦𝓮 𝓒𝓪𝓻𝓻𝔂 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓛𝓪𝓷𝓭 on its final day in the M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard . We shared a lovely evening at Summer Supper as we toasted to our summer programs and looked ahead to our upcoming seasons. Summer Supper shifted into Futuring, a celebration of videos, short films, and digital works by Indigenous artists. Futuring transformed the installation into a projection surface with videos by Margeaux Abeyta .project, Fritz Bitsoie , Olivia Camfield , Roberto Fatal , Mariah Hernandez-Fitch @ , Anjelica Gallegos .v, Jay Lamars .lamars, Suzanne Kite , Maria Maea , Selina Martinez , AnMarie Mendoza , Jazmin Romero , Bobby Joe Smith III , and Isaac Ybarra 🌱

Join us for a puppet show at 𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓃𝑔 𝒜𝓇𝒸𝒽𝒾𝓉𝑒𝒸𝓉𝓈 𝒫𝓇𝑜𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓂! On the evenings of 10/3 and 10/4, we’re inviting our friends to animate the inflatable and deflatable architectural forms by designer Leah Wulfman and 5-year-old Jin Meisenberg .anna with exciting puppet performances 🎪

𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓃𝑔 𝒜𝓇𝒸𝒽𝒾𝓉𝑒𝒸𝓉𝓈 𝒫𝓇𝑜𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓂 (𝒴𝒜𝒫) is a playable, gameable, deformable, inflatable, and interactive deconstructed bounce house that plays off common architectural elements and features, toy blocks and kit-of-parts building toys, but tend instead toward q***r means and ends: they sag, deflate, inflate, get soft, get hard, pile and plug into each other. 🏰
