The Arts for Healing and Justice Network

Directions Website

The Arts for Healing and Justice Network The Arts for Healing and Justice Network is a one-of-a-kind arts collaborative for incarcerated youth in California.

The Arts for Healing and Justice Network connects organizations providing arts programming for incarcerated youth to strengthen support for young people, build a collective voice to partner with probation and public agencies, and promote integration of arts organizations as part of a comprehensive reintegration strategy for young people. There is no other collaborative like this in Los Angeles. It is the only place where arts-based organizations working with incarcerated youth come together for a common purpose. The effort of the Network is separate and distinct from the work of its members, focusing on shifting culture within Probation, building collective partnership, and creating a space for a unified voice to advocate for better services, protocols, and support for system-involved young people. It is positioned to become a model for community-public partnership.

What if trash isn't the end of something, but the start of something else...?

Through our program Transformative Junk, 8 young people gathered discarded materials from around LA, things other people had thrown away, and turned them into original artwork. Alongside the making, they explored bigger questions: what does transformation really mean, who decides whether something has value, and what happens when you reclaim it and make something entirely new.

What actually counts as art? Kevin breaks down why we need to expand our idea of art and explore what art means to us.

Kevin has come to understand that art isn't defined by the medium, it's defined by the meaning behind it. A mural, a poem, a statement, a speech: if it has purpose and passion behind it, that alone makes it art.

Being part of the AHJN network is what helped him see that. Everyone here is dedicated to their own story and their own reason for creating.

Unlocking one of LA's best kept free secrets. 📚

Every Wednesday at AHJN, Our True Colors brings together system-impacted youth ages 15 to 26 to build strong relationships, develop feelings of belonging, and strengthen sense of identity.

Part of that is getting out into the city. On a recent trip to the Central Library in Downtown LA, about 8 young people got their first library card, some had never even been inside a library before. A small moment that opened up a much bigger world, becoming a close-knit group along the way.

We all dance. Your heartbeat is a dance. It's a pulse. 🩶

We are expressive, moving beings through the art of dance. Everything you do is dance, how you walk, the rhythm and cadence you carry without even noticing. That is something we all have to share and offer the world, an expressive outlet for kids, students, seniors, anyone, anybody, all over the world.

That is why dance is important.

Director of Youth and Community Justice at AHJN, Lindsey, tells us why we should invest in art. 🎨

It's easy to dismiss art as something extra. But art is a form of liberation. Look back at any major social movement in history, and art is at the center of it: telling the story, calling people to freedom, helping them understand who they are.

Not everyone sees themselves as an artist, and that is okay. But investing in art means investing in something that changes lives, even lives it was never made for.

Kevin, a Youth Advocate at Arts for Healing and Justice, tells us what the organization means to him. The work of AHJN work is far beyond what it set out to be. 🧡

AHJN means so much to the people who work here, and even to people outside of it. It feels less like an organization and more like a family, built by people who genuinely care about the work they do.

That is why the passion behind AHJN is impossible to miss.

"Life is a dance. There's a rhythm to everything we do." 🎶

For students who tune out a lecture, movement often reaches them first. It's how they feel rhythm, build discipline, and develop their sense of self-expression.

That is why our teaching artists start with what students already know, and build from there.

The real measure of a youth program is not the art. It is who comes back. 🎨
Rebekah, a program manager at AHJN, sees the proof in young people who stay connected after incarceration, because the work meant something. Not because they have to. Because they want to.
That is success.

At some point, most of us stopped making things just for the fun of it. Creativity got filed under "not for me." 🎨
Cameron, a program director at AHJN, helps people un-file it. You do not have to be good. You just have to be willing to find out.
