United Friends of the Children

United Friends of the Children United Friends forms consistent, long-lasting relationships with every foster youth we serve.

We prepare foster youth for life beyond foster care by giving them the confidence, tools, and opportunities they need to lead independent, fulfilled lives. United Friends empowers current and former foster youth on their journey to self-sufficiency through service-enriched education and housing programs, advocacy, and consistent relationships with a community of people who care.

Hygiene essentials or a laptop? Wi-Fi or groceries? πŸŽ’πŸ’™

For most students, these are just back-to-school must-haves. For foster youth heading to college, they can feel like impossible choices.

Every dollar donated to our back-to-school campaign is matched up to $2,500 by TVGla, so your gift goes twice as far.

Don't let a foster youth face these choices alone. Donate before August 31st at https://bit.ly/4beS8Fu

While most kids are shopping for school supplies, too many foster youth are worried about whether they will even be at the same school come fall. πŸ’™

The data is clear. Foster youth face serious academic barriers, and they need our support.

This back-to-school season, United Friends of the Children is fighting to make sure every foster youth scholar has what they need to succeed. Will you help?

🌟 Meet our Hero of the Month, Supervisor Kathryn Barger 🌟

This month, we are proud to honor LA County 5th District Supervisor Kathryn Barger for her unwavering dedication to foster youth across Los Angeles.

Supervisor Barger has long championed programs that connect foster youth with transportation, healthcare, technology, job shadowing opportunities, and more. From hosting annual holiday parties at Six Flags to spearheading initiatives that keep siblings together in care, she truly believes it takes a village to lift young people to their fullest potential.

We are honored to recognize her as our Hero of the Month. Thank you for being a champion for our kids. πŸ’™

Last month, our youth received a meaningful gift. πŸ’»πŸ’™

At the grand opening of One for All Kids' new computer and technology center in Inglewood, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor provided laptops to United Friends’ youth in need.

Access to technology is access to opportunity. Thank you, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor and OFAkids.org (One For All), for investing in our community. ✨

From feeling unseen to earning a PhD acceptance, meet Kahlila! πŸŽ“πŸ’™

Kahlila joined United Friends in 7th grade, and for years, she carried the weight of constant transitions and feeling misunderstood as a foster youth. Over time, she found support, community, and space to focus on her mental health and future.

Now, Kahlila graduated with her bachelor’s degree in June and has been accepted into USC’s PhD program. Her journey is powerful proof of what becomes possible when youth feel seen, supported, and inspired to keep going. πŸ’™

Housing stability and higher education go hand in hand, and AB 2766 gets that. πŸ’›

United Friends is proud to support this bill, which would expand priority housing access, defer housing fees until financial aid is available, and strengthen registration benefits for foster and homeless youth in college.

Every student deserves the stability to finish what they started!

Our scholars had a day to remember. πŸ’™βœ¨

For our 5th Annual Day at The Grove, board member Alex Caruso and the incredible Grove team rolled out the red carpet for our youth and then some.

From the Apple Store and Barnes & Noble gift cards to a ride on the iconic trolley, a peek behind the scenes at Caruso offices, and capping it all off with a movie at AMC, every moment was intentional, memorable, and full of joy.

Thank you to Alex Caruso and the entire Grove/Caruso team for making our youth feel seen, celebrated, and inspired. We can't wait for year six. πŸŽ¬πŸ“–
