Women Vets on Point's Rocio Palermo was a guest panelist at the Los Angeles premiere of American Solitaire, a powerful new film about a wounded veteran trying to heal in a country still at war with itself.

Representing the veteran viewpoint, she was a welcome addition to the conversation, offering important insights about identity, mental health and supporting veterans, especially women navigating the transition to civilian life.

The five weeks between jobs for Lance Stark felt vast, given his financial responsibilities and the cost of living in Southern California. He quickly sought help from the Career Development Initiative team at U.S.VETS Los Angeles, a place he held in high regard as a Marine Corps combat veteran who knew of the site’s reputation for helping those who fought for this country.

For Stark, the sudden and unexpected challenge of losing a job he loved made it difficult to manage the next steps he’d need to take, with his post-traumatic stress disorder intensifying every decision.

“Just knowing the support was there from U.S.VETS made a difference, because I knew there were resources available and I could reach out any time,” Stark says. “It’s such a great resource here in Los Angeles. Everyone knows about U.S.VETS, especially the employers.”

In addition to resume support, Stark says U.S.VETS helped him with new clothes for interviews, mental health counseling, temporary financial assistance to gap his time out of work, and referrals to other agencies for more services.

At the recent 3rd annual Camo to Careers Awards Luncheon and Veteran Hiring Fair hosted by U.S.VETS Los Angeles, Stark returned as a vendor in his new role as a reentry supervisor with Community Veteran Justice Project, dedicated to helping veterans who are experiencing legal problems or have been incarcerated find positive paths to a reclaimed sense of purpose.

“One of the worst things about my PTSD is I get so overwhelmed when things happen,” Stark adds. “Even something as simple as redoing my resume can feel daunting, so knowing U.S.VETS is there to help is really important.”

What an incredible day hosting U.S.VETS Los Angeles’ 3rd annual Camo to Careers Awards Luncheon and Veteran Hiring Fair at Bob Hope Patriotic Hall alongside FOX, City National Bank and Northrop Grumman, our partners and longtime supporters of the veteran community.

We shared the day with 27 exhibitors, including 22 LA-area employers and five veteran resource organizations and agencies reaching 81 veterans and family members seeking career support and immediate employment.

Luncheon emcee Susan Hirasuna of FOX 11 helped us honor The Madeline & Marvin Gussman Family Foundation with the Valor Award for outstanding corporate engagement through hiring initiatives, community partnerships, service projects and philanthropic impact. The Vanguard Award was presented to retired Navy Capt. Dan Goldenberg, president of the Call of Duty Endowment for his leadership supporting veterans in workplaces nationwide and helping to drive a culture of success for veterans and families.

The importance of finding connections is clear. The new Women Warriors Report 2025 from Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) spotlights why we run networks across the country linking women veterans to each other and doubling down on peer support.

As a WWP grant recipient, wellbeing is at the fore through peer mentoring, life skills classes and group counseling, among other resources tailored to post-9/11 women veterans. And since 2023, we’ve connected 1,470 women veterans to the help they need.

It was a Halo victory Monday night, and for Juan Garcia, retired Army veteran and U.S.VETS clinical social worker, it was a proud moment at Angel Stadium as he was honored for community advocacy and shining a light on mental health resources for his peers.

Garcia, who first deployed on 9/11 and holds an Army Commendation Medal for heroism in combat, stood atop the team’s dugout to take in a stadium salute from more than 44,000 fans. A fixture among Orange County veterans, Garcia coordinated events for veterans and families at the stadium for years in partnership with the Los Angeles Angels before moving into his recent role in social work.

“I want to let my fellow veterans know they’re not alone,” says Garcia, who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom across multiple waves of combat. “There is a veteran community here for you, waiting with open arms.”
