Project B.R.I.T.E. is a non-profit organization within UCLA's Community Service Commission (CSC) coalition of 37 service projects, the largest in America of its kind. It is one of two service organization on UCLA's campus working with incarcerated youth. However, BRITE is the only service organization on campus to also work with homeless and academically/behaviorally challenged youth. We are also
working on expanding our approach from just in-camp tutoring to include preventive approach through tutoring and mentoring program of teenagers from high-risk populations. We partner with School on Wheels, ASPIRE Centennial College Preparatory Academy, and ASPIRE Charter Schools by providing our educational services for the young populations they serve. We accomplish our mission statement by encouraging young offenders to utilize their period of incarceration as an opportunity to reassess their lives and develop skills. We provide tutoring and mentoring services to young offenders during their incarceration at Probation Camp David Gonzalez and Camp Miller in the Malibu Mountains. We also seek to accomplish our mission by catering our services to disenfranchised youth in areas with minimal academic resources by tutoring 6-12 grade students. We provide them with safe spaces to talk about their difficulties in the classroom and in life including, but not limited to: racism, sexism, classism, and various other systemic inequalities. In these spaces, students have the opportunity to artistically express themselves through the written word and/or the stroke of a paintbrush. What makes Project B.R.I.T.E unique from other service organizations is the population that we serve; we focus on rehabilitating those who have already fallen through the cracks. We assist those who are often stigmatized, marginalized, and neglected by mainstream society. For these reasons, B.R.I.T.E will champion social equality for underprivileged and underserved youth, promote the dignified rehabilitation of incarcerated youth, and eliminate recidivism among youth involved in the criminal justice system. This year, Project B.R.I.T.E will serve prospective students at Camp David Gonzalez, Camp Miller, ASPIRE Centennial College Preparatory Academy (CCPA), and School On Wheels. Site Dates:
School on Wheels: Wednesdays 4-5pm
CCPA: Tuesdays 3:30-5pm, Thursdays 3:30-5pm
Camp Gonzalez: Thursdays 3-4:30pm
Camp Miller: Tuesdays 3-4:30pm
