On March 20, 2026, a beautiful exhibition of exquisite court dolls by Hisashige Ito XII, was held at the Shoya House at the Huntington Library. The dolls were from the Ito Hisashige Museum collection, under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Kaneda, the museum’s director and curator.
At the Ito Hisashige museum in Japan, tea is generally served to guests viewing the collection. Mr. and Mrs. Kaneda wanted to replicate this hospitality to guests attending the opening. Members of the Urasenke Tankokai Association, Soshin Abe, Sokei Nakada, Soketsu Guterres, and Soyo Nakamori, along with Mr. Kaneda, a student of the Urasenke school, prepared tea in 6 seatings.
Approximately 50 guests were able to experience a tea ceremony with the serving of Yame no Tsuyu tea from Hoshinoen and Suetomi sweets brought from Japan.
It was a wonderful experience for the guests to view the collection and have tea in the beautiful setting of the Seifuan Teahouse.

２０２６年３月２０日ハンティントンライブラリー内の庄屋ハウスにて有職御所人形司十二世伊東久重の御所人形展が開催された。展示品はすべて伊東久重美術館のコレクションで、館長であり同館の学芸員でもある金田光司ご夫妻の尽力により実現した。
伊東久重美術館（静岡県）では来館者の方々にお抹茶をお出ししており、当地でも同様のおもてなしをされたいという金田ご夫妻のご希望もあり、人形展初日のこの日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会の協力のもと茶会が開催された。
裏千家会員でもある金田氏の他、ロサンゼルス協会から阿部宗真、中田宗恵、グテレス宗結、中森宗陽が担当し、計６席約５０名のお客様が末富製のお干菓子と星野園の八女の露で茶の湯を楽しまれた。
御所人形はじめ数々の美しい作品を見学したあと、清風庵茶室にて茶の湯体験をされたお客様方は皆、貴重な経験ができたと大変喜ばれていた。

On February 1st, a clear, warm Los Angeles morning, the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association celebrated its annual Hatsudate Shiki at Wilshire Country Club. This year was meaningful as last year’s celebration was postponed due to the devastating fires in L.A. County. A total of 108 people participated including invited guests from the Japan Consulate Office in Los Angeles, the Urasenke Tankokai Orange County Association, and the Omotesenke Domonkai.
A raised stage for the tatezome or first tea-making was built displaying a scroll which translates to “Knowing your place and living within your means brings lasting happiness” by Hounsai Sosho. A long, green, bamboo flower container with flowing willow branches to bring in prosperity, and longevity with red camelia, white plum blossoms, and pine accents.
CoA Ann Abe welcomed everyone. A moment of silence honored the memory of our late Grand Teamaster Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu. Mr. Sohaku (Robert) Hori gave the New Year’s Greetings. He honored the long life and incredible legacy of Hounsai Sosho who promoted chado all over the world. It is his wish to continue the path of the late Grand Teamaster - for peace, harmony, and tranquility.
This year Tatezome or first tea-making was presented by Soyu Uyesugi shachu. They chose the elegant nagaita so kazari temae. Ms. Naoko Zaima was hanto or assistant of host, Ms. Tomoko Kurose was soto hanto or assistant, and the narrator was Mr. Nao Sugita. The event ended with great excitement at the annual raffle.

２月１日、澄み渡る晴天に恵まれたロサンゼルスの朝、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会は、ウィルシャーカントリークラブにて年次初点式を行った。昨年はロサンゼルス郡一帯を襲った大規模火災の影響により開催が延期されたため、本年の開催は格別に意義深いものとなった。在ロサンゼルス日本国総領事館、裏千家淡交会オレンジカウンティー協会、表千家同門会等からの招待客を迎え、総勢108名が参加した。
　会場に設けられた点初め用の高座の床には、鵬雲斎宗匠筆「安分以養福」の軸が掛けられた。花入には青竹を用い、結び柳に梅・椿・松をあしらい、新春の寿ぎと繁栄長寿の願いが込められた。
　阿部幹事長の開会挨拶に続き、故鵬雲斎汎叟宗室を偲び黙祷が捧げられた。堀宗伯（ロバート）氏は新年の挨拶において、世界各地に茶道を広められた鵬雲斎宗匠のご長寿とその偉大なる功績を称え、故大宗匠の志を継ぎ、平和と和敬清寂の実現に向け、その道を歩み続けたいとの決意を述べられた。
　本年の点初めは、上杉宗裕社中が執り行い、優雅な長板総飾点前が披露された。半東は財間直子氏、外半東は黒瀬智子氏、解説は杉田直氏が務めた。最後は毎年恒例の福引で大いに盛り上がる一日となった。

To thank managers and instructors for their help throughout the year, instructors and managers were invited to a get together hosted by Robert Hori, President, Ann Abe, COA and Miki Gill, Vice COA. Eleven members attended the gathering in the hachijo in the Shoya House at Huntington Library.
Mme. Soshin Kawamura served as teishu and Mme. Soshin Abe was the hanto. Miki Gill, Mme. Nobue Kodama and Hiromi Komiyama assisted in the mizuya.
Guests were treated to a collection of beautiful odougu with references to the late Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu. The scroll by Hounsai, Fuji Gasan, Juzan Fukurai, meaning, Long life like a mountain, good fortune comes, hung in the tokonoma. A Hounsai made raku chawan with the mei of Tada Omou-“Just Think of Me/Remember Me” was truly meaningful with the passing of Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu in August of 2025.
After the tea gathering, instructors and managers were treated to a lunch. It was a wonderful time for instructors and managers to celebrate the contributions of Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu and to nurture a supportive network among the leadership of the Los Angeles tankokai.

1月18日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会会長・堀ロバート氏、幹事長・阿部アン氏、副幹事長・ギル美樹氏主宰による茶会が、ハンティントン・ライブラリー庄屋ハウスにて催され、2025年度の協会活動に奉仕した幹事、役員、ならびに茶道指導者が招かれた。
　当日は11名が出席し、庄屋ハウス八畳の間において一座が設けられた。亭主は河村宗津氏、半東は阿部宗真氏が務め、水屋はギル宗美氏、児玉宗信氏、込山宗拓氏が担当した。
　当日の席には、故・鵬雲斎汎叟宗室にゆかりのある御道具の数々が取り合わせられた。床の間には、鵬雲斎筆「富士画賛　寿山福来」の軸が掛けられ、「山のごとく寿を重ね、福が訪れる」の意が込められている。主茶碗は鵬雲斎作の楽茶碗で、「只思」の銘を有し、「Just Think of Me／Remember Me」の意をもつ。これは、2025年8月に逝去された鵬雲斎汎叟宗室を偲ぶものとして、きわめて象徴的な取り合わせであった。
　茶会の後には昼食が用意され、参加者は鵬雲斎汎叟宗室の遺徳とその功績を偲ぶとともに、ロサンゼルス協会を支える指導者・幹事相互の交流を深める、誠に意義深いひとときとなった。

On a warm and sunny day, a tea gathering was held for the Asian American staff working at Huntington Library. Twelve employees gathered in the main room of the Shoya House to observe and experience a tea ceremony. For many, it was a first time experience.
Dougu gathered was from the Robert Hori collection and centered around a New Year’s, new beginning theme. In the alcove hung a beautiful scroll by Tantansai, 14th generation grandmaster, with the words, “Hibi arata, mata hi arata nari”, meaning each day is new, and is renewed each day. The flowers of camelia and plum blossoms welcomed the new year.
The otemae was Nagaita futatsu oki usucha demae with teishu, Mme. Soshin Abe and hanto, Somi Gill.
The guests enjoyed the different tea bowls used as they had motifs of the new year as well as the horse, the zodiac, for this year.

晴天に恵まれた温暖な一日、ハンティントン・ライブラリーに勤務するアジア系アメリカ人職員を対象とした茶会が、庄屋ハウスにおいて開催された。主室には十二名の職員が参集し、茶道の実演を拝見するとともに呈茶を体験した。参加者の多くにとって、茶道は初体験であった。点前は長板二つ置薄茶点前。亭主は阿部宗真氏、半東をギル宗美氏が務めた。
　本席に用いられた諸道具は、「新年」ならびに「新たな始まり」を主題とし、ロバート・ホリ氏所蔵の品々より取り合わせられた。床の間には、裏千家十四代家元・淡々斎筆による「日々新又日新（ひびあらた　また日　あらたなり）」（毎日新しい心で物事に取り組むこと）の軸が掛けられた。花は椿および梅を用い、新年を寿ぐ趣向とした。
ゲストは、新年を表す意匠で、今年の干支である馬の絵が描かれた、数々の茶碗を楽しんだ。

On a sunny, and mild Southern California Autumn, 82 members gathered in Little Tokyo’s　Zenshuji Soto Mission to honor the memory of Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu Koji.
At 1:00 p.m. the tolling of the bells began the service followed by prayers facing the portrait of Hounsai Sosho by Reverend Shumyo Kojima. The tea offering was then performed by Mme. Uyesugi and assisted by Mme. Robinson. Hanayose (flower arrangement) was then held by members. One by one, multiple vases were arranged by members of the Tankokai. Reverend Shumyo Kojima led the group in the recitation of the Heart Sutra or Hannya Shingyo. Following that, all members were invited to offer incense.
CoA Ann Abe gave opening remarks and how she met Hounsai Sosho last time when she visited Kyoto. President Robert Hori presented the eulogy. He talked about Hounsai Sosho’s tireless effort to bring peace through a bowl of tea. Through the tragedy of war, he made it his life’s work to promote peace and spread teachings of tea all over the world. Closing remarks were made by CoA Ann Abe and the congregation was invited to tea and sweets in the social hall of the temple.
The tea utensils were chosen with collaborative efforts by members who contributed pieces that reflected and advocated Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu Koji’s global spirit of Chado. The teishu was Mr. Cirilo Domine and the hanto was Ms. Rebecca Corbett. The sweets were specially made by Mme. Kodama and named “Omokage” (remembrance).
It was a meaningful occasion for the UTLAA. It left a renewed sense of appreciation for the contributions and accomplishments of the Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu.

穏やかな南カリフォルニアの秋晴れのもと、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会員82名は、鵬雲斎汎叟宗室居士の御遺徳を偲び、リトル東京の禅宗寺に集った。
午後1時、鐘の音を合図に法要が始まり、小島秀明住職により宗匠の御影に向かって読経が行われた。続いて鵬雲斎宗匠のための一碗の茶が上杉宗裕氏により供され、ロビンソン宗心氏が介添えを務めた。花寄では、協会員有志が心を込めて花を入れた。再び小島住職の導きにより一同で般若心経を唱和し、全員が焼香を行った。
その後、阿部宗真幹事長が挨拶を行い、京都で最後に宗匠にお目にかかった際の思い出を語った。堀宗博会長による追悼の辞では、宗匠が戦禍の時代を経て「一碗からピースフルネス」という理念のもと、茶の湯を通じて世界に平和への理解を広められたことを称えられた。閉会の辞は阿部幹事長によってなされた。
法要後は寺院ホールにて呈茶が行われ、亭主はシリロ・ドミネ氏、半東はレベッカ・コルベット氏が務めた。点前に用いられた道具類は、会員が持ち寄ったもので、宗匠の「茶の湯を通じた世界的精神」を象徴する品々であった。主菓子「面影」は児玉宗信氏による特製で、点て出された薄茶とともに、参列者はそれぞれの思いを抱きながらいただいた。
本行事は、鵬雲斎汎叟宗室居士のご生涯とその功績を改めて心に刻むことができ、拙協会にとって誠に意義のあるひとときとなった。

On November 16, the annual Sotanki Memorial was held at the Nichiren Beikoku Betsuin in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. The event commemorates the life of Genpaku Sotan Koji (1578-1658), the third-generation Grand Tea Master of the Sen family. Fifty-seven guests and members participated to honor his legacy.

The Kucha ceremonial offering was hosted by Mme. Ishizuka and Mme. Masciandaro shachu, with Ms. Somi Gill as teishu and Mme. Sokei Masciandaro as hanto. Tea guests included Mme. Sokou Jones, Mme. Soshin Kodama, and Mme. Soketsu Guterres.
At the same time, a hanayose or flower arrangement ceremony was conducted by Mr. Soshin Wakayama, Ms. Somi Uehara, Ms. Kazuko Kawada, Ms. Annie Ozatalar and Ms. Naoko Zaima. One by one, beautiful, seasonal flowers were arranged from a variety of vases on the reed screen.
Hanging in the tokonoma or Alcove was a scroll written by Fukumoto, Sekio, “Kanzash*te shofu wo kiku” and translates into “Sit still listening to the sound of the pine through the wind”. A bowl was offered, and all the participants silently put their hands together to Sotan Koji.
The event concluded with Koicha tsuki Kagetsu demonstration, organized by former Sosei Matsumoto shachu, with Dr. Sogen Chernof, Dr. Soyu Garcia, Ms. Sori Hirose, Mme. Soshin Abe and Mme. Soshin Kawamura. The intricate performance was narrated by Mme. Soko Osumi with explanations on the achievements and words of Sotan Koji.
The event left attendees with a sense of tranquility and respect for the Urasenke tradition.

11月16日、ロサンゼルスのボイルハイツにある日蓮宗米国別院にて宗旦忌が営まれた。このイベントは千家三代元伯宗旦居士(1578~1658)の生涯を偲んで行われた。５７名のゲストと会員が彼の遺徳を称え参列した。
　宗旦居士への供茶は、石塚社中、マシアンダロ社中が担当し、亭主を ギル宗美氏、半東をマシアンダロ宗恵氏、正客をジョンズ宗康氏、次客を児玉宗信氏、末客をグテレス宗結氏が務めた。
同時に行われた他向けの花寄せは、若山宗真氏、上原宗美氏、川田和子氏、アニー ・オザタラー氏、財満直子氏が務め、季節の美しい花を葦屏風にかけられた様々な花器に一つずつ供えた。
　床の間には、福本積應老師筆の「閑座聴松風（かんざしてしょうふうをきく）」が掛けられ、亭主により一碗が供えられ、参加者一同は宗旦居士の遺徳を偲んで静かに合掌した。
　最後に、前松本宗静社中のチャーノフ宗元氏、ガルシア宗勇氏、広瀬宗理氏、阿部宗真氏、河村宗津氏による濃茶付花月が行われた。解説は大角宗孝が務め、複雑な花月の点前を宗旦居士の功績や言葉を添えて説明された。
法要は穏やかさと裏千家の伝統への敬意の気持ちをもって閉会となった。

On September 15, 2025, Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association was invited again at the request of the City of Ontario Library. Ms. Natasha Dennis reached out to the Tankokai for the demonstration and CoA Ann Abe was the event coordinator.
The tea ceremony demonstration was presented with an early Fall theme starting at 6 pm - 7pm with a discussion led by Mr Patrick Duffey. Thirty-four guests from the Ontario community joined this demonstration. Many were high school age. Misonodana (a table used for the tea procedure) was used to highlight the Urasenke tradition and Japanese culture.
Teishu (host) was Mr. Cirilo Domine, hanto (host’s assistant) and narrator was Mr. Patrick Duffey. Mr. Mark Umbriaco was shokyaku (main guest) and the second guest was chosen from the audience. After the demonstration, all the volunteers helped to serve sweets and tea. Mr. Wayu Kennedy was in the mizuya (preparation room) preparing tea.

2025年９月１５日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会は、今年もオンタリオ市立図書館のナターシャ・デニス氏より依頼を受け、茶道デモンストレーションを実施した。今回も企画調整は阿部幹事長が担当した。
デモンストレーションは午後6時から7時にかけて、初秋の趣を取り入れて行われた。冒頭、ダフィー・パトリック氏から解説があり、その後、茶道の実演が行われた。参加者はオンタリオのコミュニティーから34名が参加し、その多くは高校生だった。今回は、裏千家の伝統と日本文化を紹介するために、御園棚(みそのだな)が使われた。
デモンストレーションでは、亭主、ドミネ・シリロ氏、半東および解説はダフィー・パトリック氏、正客はマーク・ウンブリアコ氏が担当し、次客は会場の参加者から選ばれた。水屋では和幽ケネディ氏が茶の準備を担当した。デモンストレーション終了後には、ボランティアが参加者に菓子と茶をふるまった。

On October 3, 2025, Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association participated in a class for University of Southern California students. Eighteen East Asian Languages and Cultures students were offered a tea experience at the Seifuan Teahouse at the Huntington Library.
Students were exposed to an authentic teahouse and were able to observe and participate in sharing a bowl of tea. Sochi Ohshima was the teishu and Somi Gill was the hanto. Soyo Nakamori was in the mizuya while Soshin Abe guided the students through the tea experience and explained the spirit of Chado.
The kakejiku or scroll that hung in the tearoom was “Wa Kei Sei Jaku”, Harmony, Respect, Purity, Tranquility by Monk Itsugai from Myoshinji Temple which was explained as the essence of the tea experience. The vase was a woven basket, Nata, with flowers of pampas grass and cosmos from the Huntington Gardens. The kettle was a Mozuya k**a. A Seto Hitoeguchi, water vessel was used. The tea container or natsume, was of a chrysanthemum design to welcome the coming of fall. The tea scoop or chashaku, was by Monk Daishin at Sangenin and was given the poetic name of Kajitsu or Good Day. The tea bowl was Aka raku. The sweets were from Japan with the Icho or gingko leaf imprint, an emblem of the school of Urasenke, on a funoyaki, sweet cracker.
President Robert Hori, Toshie and Frank Mosher, Associate Director of Botanical Cultural Programs at the Huntington Library, gave the students a tour of the Japanese gardens.
The students enjoyed the experience and left with a sense of calmness and sense of peace.
2025年10月3日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会は、南カリフォルニア大学の学生を対象としたプログラムに参加した。東アジア言語文化学科の学生18名が、ハンティントン・ライブラリー内の清風庵での茶道体験に招かれ、学生たちは本格的な茶室の雰囲気に触れ、点前の様子を見学するとともに、実際に一碗の茶を味わった。
亭主は大島宗治氏、半東はギル宗美氏が務め、水屋は中森宗陽氏が担当した。阿部宗真氏は学生たちを案内し、茶の湯の精神について説明を行った。
掛物は妙心寺・逸外老師筆による「和敬清寂」であり、茶道の本質を表す語として紹介された。花入は籠花入「鉈」で、ハンティントン・ライブラリーで採取された芒と秋桜が生けられた。釜は「万代屋釜」、水指は「瀬戸一重口」を用いた。薄器は秋の訪れを寿ぐ「菊蒔絵中棗」、茶杓は三玄院・大真和尚の作で、銘は「佳日」、茶碗は「赤楽」であった。主菓子は日本から取り寄せた麩焼き煎餅で、裏千家の紋章である銀杏の葉の焼き印が押されていた。
その後、ロサンゼルス協会会長のロバート・堀氏と、ハンティントン・ライブラリー植物文化プログラム副館長のフランク・モッシャー氏およびトシエ・モッシャー氏が、学生たちを日本庭園へ案内した。学生たちはこの茶道体験を通して、静けさと安らぎを感じ、穏やかな心持ちで一日を終えた。

English Speaking Society has launched a monthly book club to read Chado-related works and meet and discuss virtually with other area students of all levels and experience. The first book for May 2025 was Every Day a Good Day by Noriko Morish*ta and June 2025 selection was The Enjoyment of Tea by Sen Gensh*tsu XV. July 2025 will be Making Tea, Making Japan by Kristin Surak and August 2025 will be Illusory Dwellings: Aesthetic Meditations in Kyoto by Allan S. Weiss. So far, there has been 7-8 participants at each session. Books are chosen by general consensus and nominations for future selections are welcome to ESS co-chairs.

英語部では、茶道に関連する書籍を毎月読み、初級者から上級者まで様々な経験を持つ各社中の生徒達とオンラインで議論する、月例の読書会を立ち上げた。2025年5月の第一回では、森下典子著『日日是好日』を取り上げ、6月には千玄室著『茶の楽しみ』を選んだ。さらに、7月には Kristin Surak 著『Making Tea, Making Japan』を取り上げ、8月には Allan S. Weiss 著『Illusory Dwellings: Aesthetic Meditations in Kyoto』を読む予定である。これまでの各セッションには7〜8名が参加した。取り上げる書籍の選定は参加者全員の合意で決めており、今後取り上げて欲しい本の推薦を英語部共同部長は常時歓迎する。
