The Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association’s Youth and ESS - English Speaking Society, presented a Nodate Chakai on a pleasantly cool and sunny day. In the spirit of friendship, camaraderie, and community, 48 members shared tea with fellow tea practitioners within the Tankokai in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere.
The chakai was inspired by a tea gathering on the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587, called Kitano no Ochanoyu. People from all walks of life gathered to have a bowl of tea and share their passion for tea.
Thirteen teishu were assigned to 6 locations on the Shoseian grounds. Each participating teishu presented chabako and chitose bon temae using personal dougu from their own or teacher’s collection. Participants were encouraged to walk around, observe and enjoy all the otemae presented.
Everyone left with a stronger sense of community within our Tankokai and a renewed appreciation for the reasons that inspired us to become passionate about Chado.

裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会青年部および英語部は、爽やかな晴天に恵まれた6月7日、松聲庵において野点茶会を開催した。当日は48名の会員が参加し、友情と親睦を深めながら、協会員相互の絆を育み、開放的な屋外の雰囲気の中で一服の茶を楽しんだ。
今回の茶会は、天正15年（1587）に豊臣秀吉が京都・北野天満宮で催した「北野大茶湯」に着想を得て企画されたものである。当時、身分の隔てなく多くの人々が集い、一碗の茶を通じて茶への情熱を分かち合ったように、本茶会もまた、会員相互の交流を目的として開催された。
松聲庵の庭内6か所に席が設けられ、13名の亭主がそれぞれの席を受け持った。各亭主は、自身または指導者の所蔵する道具を用い、茶箱点前や千歳盆点前を披露した。参加者は庭内を自由に巡りながら、それぞれの席の趣向や点前を楽しんだ。
茶会を通じて、会員たちは協会の仲間とのつながりをより強く感じるとともに、茶道に親しむ喜びを改めて実感した。

『精中鵬雲忌』

令和8年7月5日、「精中鵬雲忌」が宗家において営まれ、特別招待者を含む約320名の同門社中が参列しました。
近代茶の湯中興の祖であり、宗家の咄々斎などの茶室を増築するとともに立礼式や茶箱点などを考案し、新しい時代の茶道の在り方を示された十一代玄々斎精中居士。
その玄々斎宗匠を深く尊敬された十五代鵬雲斎宗匠が、昨年同じ夏に生涯を閉じられたことから、本年より「精中鵬雲忌」と名称を変え執り行われることとなりました。
このたびの遠忌のために取り合わさられた道具は茶道会館に展観され、鵬雲斎宗匠手造りの茶碗も飾られました。

On a Sunday morning, Miyuki Guterres, Yasmin Elming and Shin Wakayama from Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association and UTeaLA club members from UCLA participated in the annual Little Tokyo Sparkle. It is a day where the community comes together to help pick up trash, wipe graffiti, and sweep the sidewalks of Little Tokyo. We were assigned to clean the block from 2nd to 3rd streets and Central to Alameda. It was a fun day to participate and make a difference in our community.

5月の日曜日の朝、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会からグテレスみゆき氏、ヤスミン・エルミング氏、若山真一朗氏とUCLAの茶道クラブ、UTeaLAのメンバーが毎年恒例のリトル東京大掃除デー　“スパークル”に参加した。スパークルでは、コミュニティが一丸となって、リトル東京のゴミを拾い、落書きを消し、歩道を掃除する。私たちはセカンドとサードストリートの間とセントラルとアラメダストリートの間の清掃を担当した。スパークルに参加することは、地域社会をより良くする事に貢献できる素晴らしい体験となった。

On April 23, 2026, Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association demonstrated the Misonodana procedure for 33 students of Occidental College’s Nikkei Student Union.
Students observed the host, teishu, Soshin Usui, with the assistance of Soki Umbriaco. Sori Hirose was the first guest or shokyaku and guided the student who participated as the second guest. Soho Duffey provided the history of Chado and narration of the procedure.
A shikishi of Wa Kei Sei Jaku, Harmony, Respect, Purity, Tranquility, by Yamash*ta roshi hung in the tokonoma and was a talking point of the principles of Chado. Seasonal flowers were displayed in a Hagi vase. In keeping with the beautiful spring weather, a main bowl, Chokudai「Oka」, by Keiun was decorated with auspicious clouds over a flowered mountain. An unkin makie or sakura and maple leaf motif adorned a red colored lacquered, tame nuri chu natsume, or tea caddy. The chashaku, tea scoop, was lacquered with the gingko icho motif, an emblem of the school of Urasenke. The selected gomei or poetic name was Sho Shin, Beginner’s Mind. It was appropriate for the students to have an attitude of openness, humility, eagerness to learn with a sincerity of a beginner.
The students were treated to a sweet in the shape of a peach made by one of our members, Soshin Kodama. Called Michitosegusa, it is a symbol of longevity and also protection against evil. It was wonderful to see the students enjoy the sweets and matcha and gain an appreciation of the beauty of Chado.

裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会は、4月23日、オクシデンタル大学日系学生連合の学生33名を対象に、御園棚点前のデモンストレーションを行った。
学生は、亭主臼井宗真氏、半東ウンブリアコ宗記氏の務める点前を見学し、正客を務めた広瀨宗理氏が、次客として参加した学生を導いた。ダフィー宗羽氏は茶道の歴史および点前の解説を担当した。
床の間には、茶道の精神を表わす、山下老師筆「和敬清寂」の色紙が掛けられ、季節の花が萩の花入に生けられた。主茶碗には、春の麗らかな陽気にふさわしい、花咲く山の上を吉祥の雲がたなびく意匠が施された、景雲作勅題「丘」が選ばれ、棗には、桜と紅葉を描いた雲錦蒔絵が施された朱色の溜塗中棗が用いられた。茶杓は、裏千家の紋である銀杏の蒔絵が施されたもので、銘は「初心」。素直な心で学ぶ喜びを持ち、初心を忘れぬ誠実さを表す誠にふさわしい御銘であった。
学生たちには、茶道指導者の児玉宗信氏手製の、桃の形をした主菓子が振る舞われた。「三千年草」と名付けられたこの菓子は、長寿と魔除けを象徴するものである。学生たちが和菓子と抹茶を楽しみながら茶道の美しさへの理解を深めた姿は、誠に喜ばしく、意義深い会であった。

Held on an unseasonably warm March Sunday, chajin, students and friends from across Southern California commemorated the annual Rikyuki. It is a day that reflects on the life, influence and virtues of the life of Sen Rikyu (1522-1591). CoA Ann Abe welcomed the audience and thanked invited guests. Sixty-two guests attended, including special guest, Mr. Takayuki Sakai, the representative of Konnichikai.
Every year, a shachu is invited to present the Kucha or ceremonial tea offering. This year the Zenshuji shachu carried out this solemn tribute to Rikyu. The host or teishu was Mr. Soyu Kennedy and the assistant or hanto was Mr. Tianhe Zhu. The first guest was Mme. Soshin Robinson, the second guest was Mme. Soka Becker, and the third guest was Mme. Sochi Ohshima. Managers and instructors were also invited to the Hanayose floral tributes to Rikyu-koji. Bright, seasonal flowers were arranged on hanging containers.

Sweets and tea were then served to all the guests. The sweets were Shigure by Fugetsudo which was a favorite of Sosei Matsumoto who started Urasenke in Los Angeles. On the Alcove or tokonoma hung an image of Rikyu-koji and signed by Tantansai with the characters Sei Jaku (Purity and Tranquility). A single candle was lit that symbolically led the way, welcoming Rikyu to the tea gathering.
After the tea preparation, Dr. Rebecca Corbett gave a brief presentation of recent historical research on early non-Japanese tea practitioners, within and beyond Japan. The Japanese studies librarian at University of Southern California and a PhD holder in Japanese History from Sydney University (Australia), Dr. Corbett’s first book uncovered heretofore unnoted early histories of women tea practitioners in the Edo and Meiji period. At this event, she shared materials from new research on 19th and early 20th century encounters between non-Japanese people and matcha, especially tourist experiences (many of whom did not appreciate the flavor of koicha or usucha) and the first foreign chadō students, many of whom were wives and daughters of diplomats, foreign guest workers, and missionaries. In light of the current “matcha boom” around the world, it was especially enlightening to see both comical and sincere ways that matcha was first encountered by Westerners.

例年にない暖かな三月の日曜日、南カリフォルニア各地から淡交会協会員・友の会会員が一堂に会し、年に一度の「利休忌」が厳かに執り行われた。利休忌は、茶道の大成者・千利休（1522～1591）の生涯、その影響力、そして美徳を偲ぶ大切な日である。阿部幹事長は開会にあたり参列者を歓迎し、来賓への謝意を述べた。来賓には今日会代表の坂井貴之氏をはじめ、計六十二名が出席した。
　例年、供茶（供茶式）は一つの社中が担当する。本年は禅宗寺社中がこの厳かな献茶を務めた。亭主はケネディ宗幽氏、半東はティアンテ　ズー氏が務め、正客はロビンソン宗心氏、次客はベッカー宗華氏、三客は大島宗治氏が席入りした。「花寄せ」では、協会の幹事や指導者が、掛け花入れに明るく季節感あふれる花々を活け、利休居士に捧げた。
　その後、全参加者に薄茶とお菓子が振る舞われた。お菓子には風月堂の「時雨」が用いられた。これは、ロサンゼルスにおける裏千家の礎を築いた松本宗静氏が好んだ菓子である。床の間には、淡々斎筆「静寂」の二字を賛とする利休居士像が掛けられた。一燈の蝋燭が灯され、利休居士をお迎えする導きの灯として席中を照らした。
　供茶の後には、南カリフォルニア大学日本研究司書であり、シドニー大学にて日本史の博士号を取得したレベッカ・コルベット博士による講演が行われた。本講演においては、十九世紀から二十世紀初頭にかけて、日本人以外の人々が抹茶と出会った初期の様相に関する新たな研究資料が紹介された。とりわけ、濃茶や薄茶の風味を好まなかった旅行者たちの体験や、外交官・外国人労働者・宣教師の妻や娘を中心とする、初期の外国人茶道修学者に関する記録が取り上げられた。現在の世界的な抹茶ブームを踏まえると、西洋人が初めて抹茶に触れた際の滑稽でありながらも真摯な反応を知ることは、極めて示唆に富むものであった。

On March 20, 2026, a beautiful exhibition of exquisite court dolls by Hisashige Ito XII, was held at the Shoya House at the Huntington Library. The dolls were from the Ito Hisashige Museum collection, under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Kaneda, the museum’s director and curator.
At the Ito Hisashige museum in Japan, tea is generally served to guests viewing the collection. Mr. and Mrs. Kaneda wanted to replicate this hospitality to guests attending the opening. Members of the Urasenke Tankokai Association, Soshin Abe, Sokei Nakada, Soketsu Guterres, and Soyo Nakamori, along with Mr. Kaneda, a student of the Urasenke school, prepared tea in 6 seatings.
Approximately 50 guests were able to experience a tea ceremony with the serving of Yame no Tsuyu tea from Hoshinoen and Suetomi sweets brought from Japan.
It was a wonderful experience for the guests to view the collection and have tea in the beautiful setting of the Seifuan Teahouse.

２０２６年３月２０日ハンティントンライブラリー内の庄屋ハウスにて有職御所人形司十二世伊東久重の御所人形展が開催された。展示品はすべて伊東久重美術館のコレクションで、館長であり同館の学芸員でもある金田光司ご夫妻の尽力により実現した。
伊東久重美術館（静岡県）では来館者の方々にお抹茶をお出ししており、当地でも同様のおもてなしをされたいという金田ご夫妻のご希望もあり、人形展初日のこの日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会の協力のもと茶会が開催された。
裏千家会員でもある金田氏の他、ロサンゼルス協会から阿部宗真、中田宗恵、グテレス宗結、中森宗陽が担当し、計６席約５０名のお客様が末富製のお干菓子と星野園の八女の露で茶の湯を楽しまれた。
御所人形はじめ数々の美しい作品を見学したあと、清風庵茶室にて茶の湯体験をされたお客様方は皆、貴重な経験ができたと大変喜ばれていた。

On February 1st, a clear, warm Los Angeles morning, the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association celebrated its annual Hatsudate Shiki at Wilshire Country Club. This year was meaningful as last year’s celebration was postponed due to the devastating fires in L.A. County. A total of 108 people participated including invited guests from the Japan Consulate Office in Los Angeles, the Urasenke Tankokai Orange County Association, and the Omotesenke Domonkai.
A raised stage for the tatezome or first tea-making was built displaying a scroll which translates to “Knowing your place and living within your means brings lasting happiness” by Hounsai Sosho. A long, green, bamboo flower container with flowing willow branches to bring in prosperity, and longevity with red camelia, white plum blossoms, and pine accents.
CoA Ann Abe welcomed everyone. A moment of silence honored the memory of our late Grand Teamaster Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu. Mr. Sohaku (Robert) Hori gave the New Year’s Greetings. He honored the long life and incredible legacy of Hounsai Sosho who promoted chado all over the world. It is his wish to continue the path of the late Grand Teamaster - for peace, harmony, and tranquility.
This year Tatezome or first tea-making was presented by Soyu Uyesugi shachu. They chose the elegant nagaita so kazari temae. Ms. Naoko Zaima was hanto or assistant of host, Ms. Tomoko Kurose was soto hanto or assistant, and the narrator was Mr. Nao Sugita. The event ended with great excitement at the annual raffle.

２月１日、澄み渡る晴天に恵まれたロサンゼルスの朝、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会は、ウィルシャーカントリークラブにて年次初点式を行った。昨年はロサンゼルス郡一帯を襲った大規模火災の影響により開催が延期されたため、本年の開催は格別に意義深いものとなった。在ロサンゼルス日本国総領事館、裏千家淡交会オレンジカウンティー協会、表千家同門会等からの招待客を迎え、総勢108名が参加した。
　会場に設けられた点初め用の高座の床には、鵬雲斎宗匠筆「安分以養福」の軸が掛けられた。花入には青竹を用い、結び柳に梅・椿・松をあしらい、新春の寿ぎと繁栄長寿の願いが込められた。
　阿部幹事長の開会挨拶に続き、故鵬雲斎汎叟宗室を偲び黙祷が捧げられた。堀宗伯（ロバート）氏は新年の挨拶において、世界各地に茶道を広められた鵬雲斎宗匠のご長寿とその偉大なる功績を称え、故大宗匠の志を継ぎ、平和と和敬清寂の実現に向け、その道を歩み続けたいとの決意を述べられた。
　本年の点初めは、上杉宗裕社中が執り行い、優雅な長板総飾点前が披露された。半東は財間直子氏、外半東は黒瀬智子氏、解説は杉田直氏が務めた。最後は毎年恒例の福引で大いに盛り上がる一日となった。

To thank managers and instructors for their help throughout the year, instructors and managers were invited to a get together hosted by Robert Hori, President, Ann Abe, COA and Miki Gill, Vice COA. Eleven members attended the gathering in the hachijo in the Shoya House at Huntington Library.
Mme. Soshin Kawamura served as teishu and Mme. Soshin Abe was the hanto. Miki Gill, Mme. Nobue Kodama and Hiromi Komiyama assisted in the mizuya.
Guests were treated to a collection of beautiful odougu with references to the late Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu. The scroll by Hounsai, Fuji Gasan, Juzan Fukurai, meaning, Long life like a mountain, good fortune comes, hung in the tokonoma. A Hounsai made raku chawan with the mei of Tada Omou-“Just Think of Me/Remember Me” was truly meaningful with the passing of Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu in August of 2025.
After the tea gathering, instructors and managers were treated to a lunch. It was a wonderful time for instructors and managers to celebrate the contributions of Hounsai Hanso Sosh*tsu and to nurture a supportive network among the leadership of the Los Angeles tankokai.

1月18日、裏千家淡交会ロサンゼルス協会会長・堀ロバート氏、幹事長・阿部アン氏、副幹事長・ギル美樹氏主宰による茶会が、ハンティントン・ライブラリー庄屋ハウスにて催され、2025年度の協会活動に奉仕した幹事、役員、ならびに茶道指導者が招かれた。
　当日は11名が出席し、庄屋ハウス八畳の間において一座が設けられた。亭主は河村宗津氏、半東は阿部宗真氏が務め、水屋はギル宗美氏、児玉宗信氏、込山宗拓氏が担当した。
　当日の席には、故・鵬雲斎汎叟宗室にゆかりのある御道具の数々が取り合わせられた。床の間には、鵬雲斎筆「富士画賛　寿山福来」の軸が掛けられ、「山のごとく寿を重ね、福が訪れる」の意が込められている。主茶碗は鵬雲斎作の楽茶碗で、「只思」の銘を有し、「Just Think of Me／Remember Me」の意をもつ。これは、2025年8月に逝去された鵬雲斎汎叟宗室を偲ぶものとして、きわめて象徴的な取り合わせであった。
　茶会の後には昼食が用意され、参加者は鵬雲斎汎叟宗室の遺徳とその功績を偲ぶとともに、ロサンゼルス協会を支える指導者・幹事相互の交流を深める、誠に意義深いひとときとなった。

On a warm and sunny day, a tea gathering was held for the Asian American staff working at Huntington Library. Twelve employees gathered in the main room of the Shoya House to observe and experience a tea ceremony. For many, it was a first time experience.
Dougu gathered was from the Robert Hori collection and centered around a New Year’s, new beginning theme. In the alcove hung a beautiful scroll by Tantansai, 14th generation grandmaster, with the words, “Hibi arata, mata hi arata nari”, meaning each day is new, and is renewed each day. The flowers of camelia and plum blossoms welcomed the new year.
The otemae was Nagaita futatsu oki usucha demae with teishu, Mme. Soshin Abe and hanto, Somi Gill.
The guests enjoyed the different tea bowls used as they had motifs of the new year as well as the horse, the zodiac, for this year.

晴天に恵まれた温暖な一日、ハンティントン・ライブラリーに勤務するアジア系アメリカ人職員を対象とした茶会が、庄屋ハウスにおいて開催された。主室には十二名の職員が参集し、茶道の実演を拝見するとともに呈茶を体験した。参加者の多くにとって、茶道は初体験であった。点前は長板二つ置薄茶点前。亭主は阿部宗真氏、半東をギル宗美氏が務めた。
　本席に用いられた諸道具は、「新年」ならびに「新たな始まり」を主題とし、ロバート・ホリ氏所蔵の品々より取り合わせられた。床の間には、裏千家十四代家元・淡々斎筆による「日々新又日新（ひびあらた　また日　あらたなり）」（毎日新しい心で物事に取り組むこと）の軸が掛けられた。花は椿および梅を用い、新年を寿ぐ趣向とした。
ゲストは、新年を表す意匠で、今年の干支である馬の絵が描かれた、数々の茶碗を楽しんだ。
