Designer Patrick Kelly speaks at a 1989 lecture for FIT’s “Faces & Places in Fashion” series

Instead of commencing like a traditional guest speaker, Kelly decided to bring the runway to the lecture and showcase some of his iconic work (a decision that proved very popular with a hall of eager attendees).

Revisiting the Joyful designs of Designer Patrick Kelly

Mississippi’s own Patrick Kelly was the first American and the first Black designer inducted into the prestigious Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter in Paris.

His designs are known for their use of bold colors, buttons, bows, and playful aesthetics which carried over directly to the visual presentation of the work. Though playful and fun, his work simultaneously centered themes of race, culture and southern heritage.

Having a love for Black cultural artifacts and an unusual affinity for racially controversial memorabilia, Kelly produced multiple garments that made a play on racist imagery and stereotypes. This was an effort to subvert the stereotypes and reclaim these images. This is an approach that we can still see today in fashion with brands like Denim Tears.

Though his career was cut short by his passing in 1990, Patrick Kelly was a force of fashion. He leaves a legacy of iconic design and unapologetic inclusivity, having paved a way for the fashion industry to be more accessible to many designers like him.

Black Design Collective invites emerging designers and creatives to apply for Upcycle 3: Threads of Joy — a six-week educational program exploring sustainable design, creative reuse, and the possibilities of denim.

Selected participants will experience hands-on workshops, professional mentorship, and the opportunity to present an original up-cycled design during the Upcycle 3 Runway Showcase at LA Fashion Week.

PROGRAM FEES:
 🎓 Students: $50 Must be currently enrolled in an accredited postsecondary institution.

🖤 Current BDC Members: $150 Become a member and save $50 on the regular participation fee.

✨ Non-Members: $200

Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance. Selected applicants will receive an acceptance notification with instructions for completing registration and payment.
