I moped around all day and just a little while ago decided I needed some yoga, some music, some writing, and to talk to some specific people. Some things I needed to remind myself tonight and might help or resonate with someone else:

Communication is key.
Communicate with those you love. Those you dislike. Those who have hurt you. Those you are trying to understand.

Listen.
Do not anticipate. Do not plan your response while the other person is doing the talking.
Hear them. React.

Get out of your own head. Release the ego. Try to view things through a perspective that is not your own. Embrace empathy.

See the good in people. Do not define them by their faults. Be kind.

Remember positivity and hope. It's easy to be optimistic when things are going well. Keep that. Don't simply resort to pessimism when things are tough.

Do not stoop to low levels. Rise above.

Do not pretend you're perfect. Recognize your own issues and baggage, but do not live in them. Connect with people. Relate.

Differentiate between mistakes and choices. Talk things out. Be honest.

Respect yourself. Respect others. Don't necessarily give up on someone or something if you hit a rough patch. When it is time to let something or someone go, let them go. But avoid rash decisions. Think. Talk. Share. Explain. Understand. Cry. Laugh. Breathe.

Show compassion. Always. Be the bigger person. Give things time. Allow your heart to be your biggest strength.

Today I taught a yoga workshop to some absolutely amazing individuals. It was a class of nine veterans, each with their own unique story. One of my students was paralyzed from the waist down and another had part of his arm amputated. Almost everyone in the group is dealing with PTSD of some level. This really challenged me to use all of my knowledge in terms of anatomy, asana, and modifications. What an incredible experience!

It was quite an emotional but BEAUTIFUL day. I cannot go into detail about any specifics as it was a pretty confidential environment. We focused on regaining, strengthening, and maintaining our personal peaceful power - shanti shakti.

Today was a lot about the breath, meditation, engaging our chakras, restorative and calming asana, and EMPOWERMENT. I am so proud of every single person who came to class today. The fact that they showed up to try something completely new to most of them was, in itself, quite a feat. Nothing is more rewarding than positive feedback and brand new students who were at first skeptical asking for another class. It was also fantastic and new to have a group primarily made up of men!

Yoga has helped me so much through my life. Whenever I face adversity on a small or large scale, I turn to my mat. In fact, I became a yoga teacher because of how much it helped me overcome my own trauma a few years ago. I am so grateful and honored to now be able to pass on my teachings.

Yoga is for EVERYONE. Sometimes the people who would benefit from it most are the least likely to give it a try or a second thought. Or I'll have people tell me "I can't do that, I'm not flexible!" or "Don't you just sit there?" or "I'm not skinny enough!" No no no. Please don't be fooled by the Americanized stereotypical "yoga" in the media. You don't have to be a girl in your 20's. You don't have to be 100 pounds or less. You don't need to be able to touch your toes. You don't need to shop at Lululemon. Your mind and body will be put to work. A BEAUTIFUL kind of work! No matter your shape, size, age, gender, religion, abilities...Yoga is for you. All you need is an open mind!
:)

"Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured."

So much love and gratitude for the 16 students who welcomed me with open arms as I subbed a hatha class today! There were only 9 signed up for the original teacher so it was thrilling to have even more trickle in and to receive such kind and appreciative words after class. Namaste, beautiful yogis!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Shanti Shakti - Yoga with Mikaela!

In April 2014, I graduated from Yoga Vidya, a RYS under the guidance and training of the remarkable Lauren Toolin. I am now a 200 hr certified yoga teacher.

My training involved an in depth exploration of asana, anatomy, yogic texts, class sequencing, meditation, pranayama, kriya, and mantra. Lauren helped me develop my own unique voice and teaching style and assisted me greatly in deepening my personal practice.

One of the *many* bits of Lauren's teachings that resonated with me was this: Shanti Shakti -- A sanskrit term for "Peaceful Power." Through my YTT, home practice, journal writing, and various other forms of self-discovery, I was able to regain and strengthen my own peaceful power. It is now my goal and passion to help others do the same.

This is only the beginning of my teaching journey. So far, I have taught a few classes to actors and dancers of various ages, nursery school children, and small community classes. I am looking to increase my clientele.

Regardless of your age, shape, size, abilities, or experience, I am willing and eager to help guide you on your own unique yogic journey! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
