Swift of Ipswich

Swift of Ipswich The Swift of Ipswich, a 92-foot wooden topsail schooner, was the first vessel used for Los Angeles Maritime Institute's TopSail Youth Program.

The Swift of Ipswich is owned by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI), a nonprofit organization based in San Pedro, California. She was purchased as the original vessel for LAMI's TopSail Youth Program in the early 1990's. The Swift of Ipswich is a representation of a Revolutionary War privateer - a 92-foot wooden topsail schooner designed by Howard Chappelle and built in 1938 by William Robi

nson. The Swift of Ipswich was once the personal yacht of actor James Cagney, and she has been a well-known floating landmark in California for over 60 years. Many who know her say her finest hours have been those spent serving youth. About two thirds the size of one of LAMI's twin brigantines, the Swift of Ipswich is especially well-suited for working with younger youth. The Swift has been undergoing extensive restoration. She will be a sight to behold when she returns to service with local youth aboard as they sail around the LA Waterfront. Our awesome deckhand Emily made this fun and informative video when we took Swift of Ipswich for a haul-out… as you can see, everyone was very excited - especially Captain Bruce, who drove her for the first time since we installed a new engine!
