As part of Local 600’s , we’re counting down to our centennial with memorable union moments and member spotlights from the past century.

In 1973, then-governor Jimmy Carter created the Georgia Film Commission as a means of marketing the state as a viable shooting location for major productions. By the early 1990s, Georgia was becoming home to more and more prominent projects, which capitalized on the distinct look of the region. Local 666 members work could be seen on the TV series "In the Heat of the Night" and "I’ll Fly Away,” as well as features such as “Cape Fear,” “My Cousin Vinny,” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” featured here, which filmed predominantly in Juliette, south of Atlanta.

Local 600 celebrated this year’s Emerging Cinematographer Awards (ECA) honorees at Friday, October 2’s gala and reception held at the Directors Guild of America.

The event also celebrated the artistic achievements of Local 600 Director of Photography Darran Tiernan, ISC, recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Filmmaker Award, and Local 600 Director of Photography and long-time ECA Co-Chair Steven Poster, ASC, recipient of the 2026 Mentor Award.

Congratulations once again to our eight 2026 ECA honorees: Connor Van Bodel, Blaine Dunkley, Amy Faust, Barbie Leung, Jordan Oglesby, Jannis Schelenz, and Haley Watson.

As part of Local 600’s , we’re counting down to our centennial with memorable union moments and member spotlights from the past century.

1989 was a big year at the box office, and much of that success can be attributed to the union studio publicists of Local 818. ’89 was the first year that the total American box office surpassed $5 billion. To draw large crowds, you need even bigger premieres with splashy publicity, and that’s exactly what 818 members orchestrated. Featured here on the red carpet are (L-R) Roger Armstrong with Spike Lee (“Do the Right Thing”), Bob Frederick, Juliana Olinka, and Vivian Boyer (“Batman”), and Tammy Sandler and Susan Levin (“Ghostbusters II”).

As part of Local 600’s , we’re counting down to our centennial with memorable union moments and member spotlights from the past century.

In the 1980s, when video arrived on multi-cam sets and became more popular than shooting on film, Local 659 devised video trainings to make sure members were kept up to speed on the latest technology and practices. Led by 659 instructors, including 659 President George Dibie, ASC, the trainees shot scripts of the latest sitcoms (including “Night Court” and “Cheers”) under studio conditions and turned out professional-quality half-hour shows in realistic shooting schedules.

The Midterm Elections are only a few weeks away, and Local 600 is calling for volunteers to join virtual phone banks for candidates in key races who will support workers' rights, push for the federal film incentive, and be a voice of labor in Congress.

Local 600 will host members interested in participating in virtual phone banks at the regional offices in Atlanta and New York. If you are interested in volunteering, see the ongoing campaigns on ICG600.com’s “Why Politics Matter” page. Although these campaigns may not take place in your region, you can still participate in the virtual phone banks from wherever you are.
