The Roots and Wings Project is a politically charged, socially transformative, project-based theatre company that brings attention to truth and provides stage and space for stories of the unnamed, unspoken and misunderstood. Fusing traditional theatre with poetry, music and visual art, the company unites a wide range of artists and audiences from different communities around the world. Since its inception, The Roots and Wings Project has performed with such theatres as Los Angeles’ CASA 0101 Theatre, Theater of Note, UCLA’s Glorya Kaufman Dance Theatre, San Francisco’s Phoenix Theatre and Venue 9, THe Rosenthal Theater at Inner-City Arts, New York City’s Surf Reality, and Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as commissioned writing and performances for both incarcerated and public audiences.

Celebrating the life and legacy of Ntozake Shange. 🎂

A visionary poet, playwright, and storyteller, Shange brought poetry, movement, and music together to honor the fullness of Black women’s lives. 🎭

Her work is part of The Roots and Wings Project’s curriculum, inspiring us to tell our stories and recognize the sacred within ourselves. 📖 🙏

We honor her extraordinary contribution to theatre and the generations who continue to find themselves in her words. 💛

Domestic Violence is when someone exercises coercive control over an intimate partner, isolating the person with ongoing psychological, physical and emotional abuse. There is a societal fallacy that leaving is easy when escaping is the most dangerous time. Our homes have been characterized by this darkness and it’s been worsening. Women make up 75% of DV survivors. There are many cases in prison where women wind up incarcerated for protecting themselves or their children.

We at The Roots and Wings Project invite you to imagine a world where we are each other’s concern, where we care deeply about one another, making it our business to make sure people around us—strangers and loved ones—are protected and loved. 🕊️

Hurt people hurt people. May our homes be safe, generations of abuse be stopped, and perpetrators and survivors heal. 💜
