SLATE-Z is sunsetting on April 18. To commemorate SLATE-Z’s impact, we are highlighting all of the amazing efforts and initiatives over the past decade with

The South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone Was Formed in 2014, with the purpose of gaining Federal Promise Zone designation for South LA, marking the inception of our organization. Our mission was to revitalize South LA by moving residents toward economic opportunity, with a focus on a thriving Los Angeles and the implementation of our five levers of change: Education, Jobs, Public Safety, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Transit.

Working with our partners and community organizations, we’ve had the pleasure of being part of significant changes and initiatives within South LA, including the implementation of the Universal Basic Mobility Pilot, the South LA Eco-Lab, and the Cultural Treasures initiative. We celebrate all of these milestones over the next two weeks as we say goodbye and thank you.

Day 9: Today we are highlighting our Education lever of change, a key component of our work at the South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone. SLATE-Z sees education as a critical gateway to address poverty and wealth building due to the high percentage of people with low education rates in South Los Angeles, compared to the rest of LA County.
The South Los Angeles Promise Zone consists of educational assets (e.g. high schools, community college, university, etc.) that are working collaboratively to ensure that those institutions prepare South Los Angeles residents for the economic opportunities ahead.

Day 7: As one of our five levers of change, Small Business & Entrepreneurship efforts are key to our mission of revitalizing the South Los Angeles Promise Zone. At SLATE-Z, we address poverty and move South Los Angeles residents to economic opportunity by focusing on two sources of wealth building: living wage jobs and small business & entrepreneurship.
We work to prepare Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs for the economic opportunities ahead by focusing on their foundational needs (leases, bank accounts, etc.), sustainability (economic and environmental sustainability), and growth (procurement contracts with the City of Los Angeles, LA County, and private funders) to build wealth.

Day 6: As the South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone, one of our key levers of change is transit. The goal of the transit workgroup is to improve community infrastructure by increasing the affordability, safety, and use of current and emerging public mobility options.
SLATE-Z was founded as a place-based, collective impact effort to strategically capitalize on neighborhood revitalization opportunities connected to transit-oriented development.
With the development of Metro’s “K” line on Crenshaw Avenue, the community saw an opportunity to examine and harness the economic impacts that the “K” line would bring to the region, and decided to work together for the benefit of the historic community.
Transit Provides access to life’s opportunities and can also aid in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental harm that has plagued South Los Angeles. Effective transit-oriented solutions in South Los Angeles stimulate economic activity and provide equitable access to education, workforce development, wellness opportunities, and more.

Day 6: Highlighting the Universal Basic Mobility Pilot Program

Access to transportation is crucial in today’s world, especially in areas burdened by climate change. In South Los Angeles, public transit opens doors to life’s opportunities while also reubm and new public transportation options, introduced new shared mobility options for residents and workers, expanded and integrated fare payment subsidies, and provided green jobs training.

As the backbone entity that facilitates and manages the efforts of the South Los Angeles Promise Zone, SLATE-Z is proud to partner with LADOT as a strategic advisor and support community outreach efforts connected to transit-oriented development. Effective transit-oriented solutions in South Los Angeles stimulate economic activity and provide equitable access to education, workforce development, wellness opportunities, and more.

: Our five levers of change are important pillars to the work within our organization. Today we are highlighting our Jobs lever of change:  SLATE-Z works to ensure that South Los Angeles residents are trained/prepared for the economic opportunities ahead and that the high-quality jobs that will result from these investments are ones that can foster economic opportunity, stability, and mobility for South Los Angeles families.

SLATE-Z’s Jobs efforts are interrelated with its other levers of change: transit, education, public safety, and small business and entrepreneurship.

Over the past decade, we’ve aimed to move South Los Angeles residents into 10,000 living wage jobs. We’re proud to report that we are almost to our goal at 9,437.

DAY 4: Highlighting Cultural Treasures
In 2021, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs secured funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town initiative to integrate arts, culture, and design into local efforts that strengthen communities over the long term.
The Promise Zone Arts South LA (PZA:SLA) initiative is supported by the Our Town project and advances local economic, physical, and social outcomes to lay the groundwork for systems change work that centers equity. Cultural Treasures of South LA is an asset mapping and activation initiative that gives South LA residents a platform to spotlight local cultural treasures — the artists, sites, cultural practices, and tradition bearers that they deem significant — that illuminate the rich cultural tapestry that makes South Los Angeles a vibrant and thriving community.
SLATE-Z participated in the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages of the PZA:SLA Cultural Treasure Survey and Mapping project. This collaboration is not just about preserving our cultural heritage, it is about empowering the South LA community, spotlighting local treasures, and fostering growth in small businesses and entrepreneurship.
SLATE-Z’s journey in supporting PZA:SLA began with an inclusive approach to community engagement. Open dialogues in SLATE-Z’s Working Groups laid the foundation for what would become a collaborative effort to ensure diverse voices were represented in the collection of data. The result was a wave of enthusiasm that brought community members closer to the heart of this initiative.
The Promise Zone Arts South Los Angeles initiative not only highlights the cultural richness of our region but also aids in its preservation.
