We are pleased to announce the Closing Reception of Blue Roof’s Summer AiR, Mimi Doyo’s exhibition, Stay Awhile. The evening will feature an artist talk between Doyo and Yulia Gasio, Ukrainian-born artist, educator, researcher.

About Yulia:

Yulia Gasio is a Ukrainian-born artist, educator, and researcher whose interdisciplinary practice examines landscape, cultural memory, displacement, identity, and the enduring effects of colonial and imperial histories. Originally from Luhansk in the Donbas region of Ukraine and now based in Southern California, Gasio works across painting, drawing, research, and collaborative cultural projects.

Gasio holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach and an MA with an emphasis in Art History from California State University, Fresno. She is an Assistant Professor of Art in Drawing and Painting at California State University, Long Beach and a PhD candidate in Culture and Performance at UCLA, where her research investigates Ukrainian visual culture through decolonial and postcolonial frameworks, with particular attention to internal colonialism, material culture, ornament, landscape, and collective memory.

About Mimi:

Mimi Doyo (b. 1999) is a Filipino-American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Her interdisciplinary practice combines painting, poetry, and journaling to explore memory, family, and the layered spaces of home. Working primarily in acrylic, Doyo creates paintings that preserve fleeting moments of everyday life, transforming ordinary scenes into quiet reflections on love, belonging, and the passage of time.
Drawing from her personal archive of photographs, family albums, and journals, Doyo paints domestic interiors, backyard gardens, shared meals, and familiar objects—including houseplants, cans of SPAM, mahjong games, and well-worn shoes by the door. These intimate details become symbols of care, migration, and the quiet rituals that shape family life across generations.

As Ayelet Carmi’s residency comes to an end, we would like to thank Carmi’s Art Advocate, Jessica Witkin✨

Jessica spent eight years as a Director at Blum & Poe (turned Blum Gallery) in Los Angeles. Prior to that, she held Director positions at Salon 94 and team gallery in New York, and began her career as an archivist at David Zwirner. She holds a BA in Art History from the University of Southern California and completed curatorial internships at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
