A high-risk pregnancy label doesn’t tell the whole story.

Being over 35 doesn’t automatically mean your pregnancy is high-risk. An ultrasound estimate of a “big baby” isn’t exact. And gestational diabetes doesn’t always mean an early induction is necessary.

While some pregnancies require additional monitoring and medical intervention, a high-risk label shouldn’t mean your questions go unanswered or your options go unexplored.

You deserve to understand why a pregnancy is considered high-risk, what a recommendation is based on, and what the benefits, risks, and alternatives are before making decisions about your care.

Ask questions. Understand your options. Advocate for care that considers your individual circumstances, not just a label.

One important reminder: severe headaches, vision changes, sudden swelling, or high blood pressure during pregnancy need immediate medical attention.

As National Midwifery Week wraps up, a reminder: birth used to belong to midwives.

In 1900, almost every U.S. baby was born at home, and midwives attended about half of those births. In parts of the South, Black granny midwives caught up to 75% of babies into the 1940s. Then birth moved into the hospital, and by 1969 just 1% of births happened outside one.

Midwives never stopped being the answer. Today they can provide 90% of essential maternal and newborn care.

So we fund them. That means care at 12 partner birth centers across 8 states, including Puerto Rico, and 20 future midwives in training on Chicago’s South Side.

Pregnancy looks different for everyone. Some people are getting their glam team ready. Others are clocking in, taking the bus, making dinner, or just trying to make it through the day.

But every pregnant person deserves care that makes them feel supported, respected, and seen.

Because good maternal care shouldn’t be reserved for the people who can afford it.

America needs midwives. Period.

Midwives are not an “alternative” to maternity care. They are trained, licensed clinicians who provide care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, identify complications early, collaborate with physicians, and transfer care when a higher level of care is needed.

And yet, only about 1 in 8 U.S. births is attended by a midwife while the U.S. continues to have the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries.

So the question isn’t whether midwives belong in our healthcare system.

This National Midwifery Week, we’re celebrating the midwives doing the work and pushing for a maternity care system that treats midwifery as essential, not optional.

Because every family deserves access to care that is safe, respectful, and centered on them.

40.2% of all births in the U.S. are paid for by Medicaid.

But in 18 states and D.C., Medicaid still doesn’t pay midwives who aren’t registered nurses.

That means a family can have Medicaid coverage and still face barriers to accessing the midwifery care they want and need.

This is the kind of policy gap birthFUND exists to help close.

Because access to care shouldn’t depend on whether the system recognizes the provider delivering it.

40 weeks is an estimate, not a deadline…. Just in case you needed a reminder mama💗

We’re sharing this important reminder from Britni Linscome | Birth Educator | Birth Doula | Placenta Spc.: 💗🫶🏽 those final weeks of pregnancy are an important part of baby’s development, including the continued development of the lungs and other systems that help prepare baby for life outside the womb.

Before scheduling an induction or making decisions based solely on a due date, it’s worth having a conversation with your midwife or care provider about what’s right for you and your baby.

Every pregnancy is different. Your care should leave room for questions, informed choices, and your body’s own timeline.

Save this for the week the “any baby yet?” texts start rolling in, and send it to someone who needs the reminder.
