1446년, 훈민정음을 반포한 세종대왕은 많은 민족이 하고 싶은 말이 있어도, 끝내 그 뜻을 글로 펴지 못한다고 했습니다. 그래서 누구나 쉽게 익혀 날마다 편히 쓸 수 있도록 스물여덟 글자를 만들었습니다. 그전까지 글은 양반층의 전유물이었고, 나라를 지탱해 온 농민과 노동자, 여성들은 자신의 지식과 이야기를 담을 글 없이 살아왔습니다. ⁠

즉, 한글은 노동자들에게 목소리를 “준” 것이 아니라, 그들이 늘 지니고 있던 목소리를 “존중”한 것입니다. ⁠
⁠
민족을 위해 설립된 민족학교는 그 정신을 이어, 우리 지역사회의 모든 구성원이 스스로 목소리를 내고 그 목소리가 들릴 수 있도록 함께하겠습니다.⁠

*이때까지는 아직 한글이라는 명칭이 널리 알려지지 않아 ‘가갸날’이라는 지금은 좀 생소한 명칭을 사용했으며, ‘한글날’이라는 이름으로 바뀌게 된 것은 1928년의 일이다.⁠

🇰🇷 This year marks 100 years since Korean language scholars first proclaimed a day to honor Hangul (Korean written language) in 1926, during Japanese occupation of Korea, when keeping our language alive was an act of resistance in itself.⁠
⁠
When King Sejong The Great introduced Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People, the document that King Sejong has invented and distributed an entirely new script for the Korean language) in 1446, he wrote that many ordinary people had things they wished to say but no way to put their thoughts into writing. So he created 28 letters that anyone could learn easily and use in daily life. This script would later be known as Hangul. ⁠
Before then, writing belonged almost entirely to the elite class or yangban, while farmers, laborers and women, whose work sustained the nation, carried their knowledge and stories without a written form of their own. ⁠
⁠
Hangul didn’t give working people a voice; it honored the voice they always had. At KRC, we carry that spirit forward by making sure every member of our community has the tools to speak for themselves and be heard. ⁠

Community advocates and faith leaders completed their 8-day, 96-mile pilgrimage from Adelanto Detention Center to the Metropolitan Detention Center in LA to call for an end to cruel and inhumane conditions at detention centers across the country. KRC team members were proud to walk the first leg of the journey, so standing alongside our partners at the finish line meant a lot to us. Our liberation is bound together. ¡Sí se puede!

🔴 DAY 8 10/6— LA Metropolitan Detention Center 12:00 PM (Noon) — The Godmothers of the Disappeared lead us in a Vigil

LA — you’ve held the line at MDC for over a year. This day needs that same strength from you. We need numbers. We need presence. We need to be impossible to ignore before we hit the polls

After the vigil, we march together to Essayli’s office

Our latest Digital School was a hit! We worked with seniors to help build practical skills for everyday life:⁠

💻 Google account: we walked participants through setting up their own accounts, with a focus on generating strong passwords to safeguard their personal information.⁠
🤖 AI made simple, secure, and sustainable: KRC team member Jeong-Min broke down AI in simple terms, best practices for safe usage, and being cognizant of the environmental impact of AI.⁠
🙌 Hands-on practice: Participants got to try out the tools together with one-on-one guidance, so they can put them to use in their daily lives.⁠
