Last week’s “Sijang” Mutual Aid & Community Marketplace pilot was a heartfelt reminder of what community care looks like in action. Following the current administration’s relentless cuts to SNAP and other vital safety net programs, we are making sure our elders continue to have access to fresh culturally-sensitive produce and groceries like kimchi.
The turnout exceeded our expectations. Classic “gayo” from the 80’s and 90’s played over the speakers, seniors shared laughs over nostalgic Korean snacks, and youth brought the energy with live pungmul drumming performances.
Big love and gratitude to KRC volunteers and staff who show up every time the system fails our neighbors. Your dedication helped Sijang make its debut with flying colors.

지난주에 민족학교에서 열린 ‘시장’ 무료 농산물 나눔과 이웃 장터를 처음으로 선보이며, 이웃 간의 돌봄이 실제로 어떻게 이루어지는지 다시 한번 가슴 깊이 느꼈습니다. 현 정부의 SNAP(푸드스탬프)과 사회 안전망 예산이 계속 삭감되는 와중에도, 저희는 어르신들이 신선하고 친숙한 식재료와 김치 같은 생필품을 계속 챙기실 수 있도록 마음을 모으고 있습니다.
추억의 8090 가요와 맛깔난 주전부리로 웃음꽃이 가득했던 현장엔 흥겨운 풍물 가락까지 더해지면서 잔치 분위기가 제대로 달아올랐습니다.
정부가 제 기능을 못 할 때마다 이웃을 위해 가장 먼저 발 벗고 나서는 민족학교 자원봉사자분들과 직원 여러분, 진심으로 사랑하고 감사합니다. 여러분의 헌신 덕분에 첫 시장을 대성공으로 마칠 수 있었습니다.
