AWFC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: A Q&A with Nan Schwartz

“I was taken to lunch by a family friend, Gilda (where she asked): “Why aren’t you writing scripts? You have the time and connections.” I responded, “I have no stories to tell.” Gilda then asked, “Well, what is your big dream in life?” “I would have liked to be a film composer like Johnny Mandel, but it’s too late-l’ve already finished college, and there are no women in the field.” Gilda encouraged me-“Why don’t you study privately, and become the first woman?” So I did!”

AWFC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: A Q&A with Michelle Birsky

Scoring the pilot episode (on Terminator Zero) was definitely the most challenging, as Kevin and I were still finding the sound of the series, while receiving feedback translated from Japanese and dealing with the imposter syndrome of just being in this environment. In those very early days, I think we were trying to make everyone else happy, and therefore the music was a bit disjointed, without a singular identity. Everything clicked for us when our Netflix producer Dylan said, “Just write what you think is cool.I guess what I learned from this is that your unique voice is the most important thing. It’s why you get hired in the first place, so use it!
