AWFC Playback - Deadline: Sound & Screen Television

I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Sound & Screen Television presentation at UCLA’s Royce Hall. This concert is a key event in setting the tone for Emmy consideration, featuring a 60-piece orchestra and an informative Q&A after each piece, as well as a cocktail reception where voters can mingle and get to know the artists. This concert, presented by Deadline in association with Rhapsody PR and Costa Communications, serves as a great reminder to honor television scores as epic, cinematic, and also ultimately human musical experiences. If anyone needs to be convinced of the value of a live ensemble budget for a show, this concert is a great place to start!

As Co-President of the AWFC, I really enjoyed connecting with several AWFC members (see the photo!) as well as supportive studio executives, PRO directors, AWFC supporting members, friends from the CDC, and various other composers presenting their work on the program. The positive energy, creativity, and excitement were palpable.

It was a pleasure to celebrate Amanda Jones’ participation with her score for Murderbot (Apple). Amanda conducted her own score onstage. The music captures a unique combination of energy, propulsion and humor for this popular sci-fi series (which happens to feature one of my personal faves, Alexander Skarsgard!). The show’s music is up for Emmy consideration in three music categories: Main Title, Series and Song. We had a chance to talk to Amanda about the story concepts which motivated her score and how she approached instrumentation to bring the tension between technology and humanity to life. For fans of the show, the suite was a wonderful encapsulation of the arc, and it also served as a fabulous introduction to the world of the story to those who haven’t watched it yet.

AWFC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: A Q&A with Tiff Randol

“Co-founding Mamas in Music wasn’t some big master plan. It was more of a response. A need to create something that we couldn’t find. What’s been most meaningful is seeing how ready people were for it. The need for connection, for shared understanding, for real support. It was already there. Sometimes just creating a space where people can find each other shifts everything.”
