This year's conference brings together scholars from diverse disciplines—linguistics, literature, history, media studies, and more—to reflect on the past, present, and future of the tongues of Taiwan. We invite discussions and debate around how linguistic practice has shaped cultural identity and vice versa in Taiwan, as well as explorations of the nuanced negotiations between different languages and cultural traditions undertaken by peoples living in the archipelago.

In this fireside chat, he moves beyond the political arena to discuss his latest work, Unbroken: The Power of Resilience.

ASPAC 2026 will be held June 24–26, 2026 at California State University, Northridge. The conference invites proposals from educators, scholars, and students working in Asian and Asian diaspora studies under the theme “Rethinking Asia: Crisis, Resilience, and Collective Futures.” It welcomes panels, papers, roundtables, and posters addressing historical and contemporary issues shaped by climate change, geopolitics, technology, and migration. Topics include sustainability, mobility and transnational networks, digital cultures and AI ethics, arts and media, and evolving ideas of community and belonging, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and forward-looking approaches. The submission deadline is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Submit a proposal for the Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast AAS regional conference by April 15—the conference will take place at Cal State Northridge, June 24-26.

📣 Exciting News for Cantonese at UCLA!

Save Cantonese at UCLA is thrilled to share that a Spring 2026 Cantonese class is now officially in the works. 🎉 As of the end of March, over 100+ students have signed up!

📌 Due to space constraints, the location has moved from Kaplan 211 to Bunche 10383 for the following dates: April 3, 10, 17; May 15; and June 5. The class will still meet at 3:00-3:50 PM. Further updates will be shared to all accepted students. 📌

It’s been 40+ years since UCLA last offered an official Cantonese language course. This new, non‑credit-bearing Spring class is an important step toward rebuilding Cantonese instruction on campus—strong enrollment and student interest can help shape the future of Cantonese at UCLA.
