PJLA launched a Victory Garden Project in April 2020 to help East LA families mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19.

With generous in-kind supoort from local and regional businesses we were able to transform one family's front yard into a mini urban farm.

A big shout out to Whittier Fertilizer for their generous donation of one cubic yard organic soil. To American Horticulure for soulful donation of dozens upon dozens of 7ft bamboo bamboo poles to build trellises. To Luis G for his community spirit and donation of labor to build raised beds.

And, a mighty fist bump to our PJLA Compost Warriors who made tons and tons of compost to share with our community families.

Stay tuned for information about how to request a Victory Garden.

Hello COMPOST WARRIORS!
Hello SPRING 2020!

Here's a lil update on our Composting In the Time of Corona saga.

Current circumstances call on us all to do our part to reduce the risk of spreading or contracting the novel Corona virus.

The City of Los Angeles announced yesterday, March 19, that all non-essential businesses and activities must stop so that as many people as possible may shelter in place. We commit to hunker and bunker down accordingly.

Although the City listed gardening/farming as an essential activity and composting is integral to the process of gardening and farming, our larger community health goals call on us to minimize the number of people engaging with the space and with each other at the hub in order to reduce the possiblity of contact and transmission of the virus.

Therefore, in solidarity with our community, Proyecto Jardin LA will suspend all efforts to coordinate private volunteer visits to compost at the hub. Our leadership team will continue to check on the piles weekly, scheduling our visits to prevent personal contact.

We encourage you to freeze your kitchen scraps and explore opportunities to compost on a small scale in your own back yard.

We will post tips and DIY approaches to creating and maintaining a simpple composting system at home.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Feel free to message your questions and comments here or email them to [email protected]

Hasta pronto,
PJLA Compost Warriors

In keeping with our mission to promote social responsibility, personal health, and community sustainability Proyecto Jardin is suspending large community volunteer gatherings at our compost hub in Echo Park.

Our core team of volunteer hub coordinators will visit individually or in pairs on a weekly basis to monitor pile temperature, feed the pile, and sift small batches of finished compost.

When working in teams we maintain 3-6 distance, wear protective bandanas across our face, and use natural anti-viral sanitizing soap to wash our tools and other supplies.

Our priority is personal and community health. As we learn more about the Corona virus and new recommended protocols as they emerge, we will adapt our activity accordingly. The beauty of compost is that the process of decomposition continues as nature intended with or without human intervention. Cold compost takes longer to decompose, we're in no hurry.

If you're feeling cooped up and in need of a little physical activity, we can book a special private visit on a Saturday of your choosing for you and your family to turn the pile, sift compost or prep and add your kitchen scraps to the pile.

The garden onsite has a gorgeous meditation labrynth for some of your family to enjoy while your other family members work the pile.

Remember, The family that composts together, stays together!

Reply here or send us message.

Stay safe and wash your hands often (30 seconds), don't touch your face, and keep 6 feet. We got this!
