This should concern every American who believes in the right to organize, advocate, and speak freely.

Florida has now taken a major step toward shutting down CAIR and CAIR-Florida, with the state Cabinet approving a designation that labels the organizations “domestic terrorist organizations.”

If the designation takes effect on November 5, CAIR-Florida says it will be forced to shut down its operations in the state under threat of severe criminal penalties. The ACLU and CAIR are challenging the designation in court, arguing that the state denied them a meaningful opportunity to be heard.

This is bigger than just one organization.

When a government can use its power to label a civil rights organization as “terrorist” and threaten its ability to operate, it raises key questions about free speech and due process, especially as it relates to the future of Muslim institutions and civic engagement in America.

Speaking at The Guibord Center’s Service of Spiritual Solidarity at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Los Angeles, Salam Al-Marayati reflects on how cross-community coalitions defended the constitutional promise of America in our darkest hours.

True security cannot be built on expanding surveillance, endless conflict, and fear. It requires human security: protecting the freedom of worship, freedom of expression, freedom from fear, and freedom from want for every single person. In remembering all lives lost and impacted, we reaffirm our shared commitment to mutual compassion and collective dignity.

A Vermont jury has found 51-year-old Jason Eaton guilty of attempted murder for the November 2023 shooting of three Palestinian college students—Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad, and Kinnan Abdalhamid—near the University of Vermont campus.

The jury rejected the defense's argument of non-guilt by reason of psychosis after prosecutors presented evidence from a state psychiatrist showing Eaton intended to kill the three men. Eaton now faces up to life in prison.

The three friends, who grew up together in Ramallah, were visiting family over Thanksgiving when Eaton approached them without speaking and opened fire. The attack left Hisham paralyzed from the waist down and severely injured Tahseen and Kinnan.

This verdict marks a critical step toward accountability for targeted violence against Palestinian and Arab students in the US. Our thoughts remain with Hisham, Tahseen, Kinnan, and their families as they continue their path toward healing.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council’s First Amendment Center is deeply concerned by reports that Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran’s tour after several stadiums objected to his participation following his public statements on Palestine.

Artists have long used their platforms to speak about war, injustice, and government policy. Those views can be challenged and criticized. But when political speech is met with canceled appearances and lost opportunities, it sends a clear warning to others about the cost of speaking out.

The circumstances are especially concerning if publicly owned or controlled venues were involved. Public institutions cannot use their authority to punish or exclude speakers simply because of their political viewpoint.

MPAC’s First Amendment Center calls for transparency from any publicly owned or controlled venue involved in Macklemore’s removal. Americans should be free to debate controversial political issues without institutions using access and opportunity as tools to silence one side of that debate.

Twenty-five years after 9/11, we remember.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost, the first responders who never made it home, and the families who continue to carry that grief.

As American Muslims, we share in that grief. We also remember the solidarity that followed, when Americans came together to reject the idea that an entire faith should be blamed for the actions of terrorists.

That spirit of solidarity matters today.

On Wednesday, on Capitol Hill, the Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign brought together a diverse group of faith leaders to speak out against the concerted escalation in anti-Muslim rhetoric, especially coming from politicians. We formally released and read aloud an open letter that states: “Anti-Muslim Bigotry from Political Leaders is Dangerous and Should Not Be Tolerated: For the Love of God—and Our Neighbor—It Must End Now."

We invite you to read the full letter, add your name, and share this message with your faith communities and political leaders.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a day of tremendous pain that also marked the beginning of a long period anti-Muslim hate, let us close this chapter and together begin writing a new one defined by the highest ideals of our faiths and of our nation.

Twenty-five years after 9/11, anti-Muslim rhetoric has not faded. It has moved from internet subcultures into main political discourse.

Recent Pew Research data shows that over half of Americans now view Islam as more likely than other religions to encourage violence, up sharply from 25% shortly after 2001. Public perception surrounding patriotism and impact continues to mirror this rise in prejudice.

Yet, American Muslims are not standing outside the political process requesting permission to participate. They are winning mayoral seats, running for Senate, and taking office in Congress to represent their communities.

We honor the 2,977 victims and first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. We mourn alongside our fellow Americans.

However, we must reject the notion that the actions of a few define an entire faith. American Muslims are an integral part of the fabric of this country.
