Throughout ALC55 in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles Urban League President & CEO Cynthia Mitchell Heard has had the opportunity to connect with legislators, community leaders, corporate partners and supporters from across the country.

These moments are more than photo opportunities. The Los Angeles Urban League continues to be Rooted, Ready & Rising in Washington, D.C., connecting with leaders and organizations working to strengthen communities, advance opportunity, and help shape the policies that affect the people we serve.

Today’s engagements reflected two important sides of advocacy: building a collective voice around policy and strengthening the relationships that help turn priorities into progress.

🤝 Black Brown Unity Coalition Joint Policy Agenda (2026–2028)
“Celebrating Our Communities, Building Our Future” brought together leaders around shared policy priorities and the power of coalition-building to address issues impacting Black and Brown communities.

✨ National Pan-Hellenic Council Chairman’s Reception
The reception brought together leadership from the Divine Nine, whose historic Black Greek-letter organizations have long traditions of service, civic engagement, education, leadership, and community impact.

For the Los Angeles Urban League, advocacy is about making sure our communities have a voice in the conversations and decisions shaping their future. It also means building strong partnerships with organizations and leaders who share a commitment to creating opportunity and lasting impact.

From policy to partnership and conversation to collective action, LAUL is proud to represent Los Angeles in these important spaces at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference.

The Los Angeles Urban League is proud to be in our nation’s capital today for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC55), joining leaders, creators, advocates, and changemakers from across the country for conversations shaping what comes next.

Congratulations to as the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation celebrates 50 years of leadership, service, and impact — and brings the community together for this milestone conference. 🙌🏾

Today, we’re in the room for “Meeting the MOMENT: Black Creativity Beyond Explanation,” hosted by Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove — a powerful conversation exploring Black creativity, influence, leadership, and the impact of the creative economy.

Today, the Los Angeles Urban League was proud to join community partners, civic leaders, students, local businesses, and South Los Angeles residents for a special Neighborhood Preview Day at the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. ✨

More than a new cultural landmark, the Lucas Museum represents an exciting new chapter for South Los Angeles — creating greater access to art, learning, public space, and the stories that connect us.

The celebration was made even more memorable with a wonderful performance by the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA), showcasing the extraordinary young talent and creativity within our Los Angeles community. 🎶👏🏾

At the Los Angeles Urban League, we know how powerful it can be when communities have access to places, programs, and opportunities that inspire possibility. We’re excited to see this extraordinary new institution become part of the South Los Angeles community we are proud to serve.

Congratulations to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art as it prepares to officially open its doors to the public on September 22! 🎉

🌟 Meet Nkosi Kafele — a 16-year-old entrepreneur, CEO of Kafele Kleaning, and a young man who continues to make the Los Angeles Urban League proud.

Now a junior in high school, Nkosi has been involved with the Los Angeles Urban League’s young entrepreneur programs, including Biz Institute and Biz Camp, for more than two years.

🎤 This past June, Nkosi stood before a sold-out audience at our annual gala and shared his story in the testimonial speech you see here. Just about a month later, he took another major step forward.

Nkosi competed in a nationwide BizCamp WILDCARD Competition, where hundreds competed for just ONE opportunity to advance to the National Competition in New York later this year.

🏆 And YES — Nkosi won it!

🗽 He’s headed to New York to compete at nationals, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Nkosi has also represented the Los Angeles Urban League at the Youth Leadership Summit, held in conjunction with the National Urban League Annual Conference.

💼 At just 16, is already building his own business, operating a residential, commercial, and short-term rental cleaning and janitorial service company. And he is one of hundreds of young, up-and-coming business owners moving through the Los Angeles Urban League’s entrepreneurship pipeline.

Under the guidance of our instructors Rhonda Holbert and Crystal Mitchell, this program produces winners every year. Through programs like these, and our work with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, we see firsthand why investing in young people and their ideas is an investment in the future of our community.

👏 Congratulations to Rhonda, Crystal, Nkosi, and all of our young entrepreneurs.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Los Angeles Urban League joins our nation in remembering the lives lost, honoring the courage of first responders and service members, and standing with the families and communities forever changed by that day.

September 11 reminded us that even in moments of unimaginable tragedy, our greatest strength is found in unity, compassion and service to one another.

Twenty-five years later, we honor that spirit by continuing to build stronger and more resilient communities through our four pillars: Education that prepares future generations, Workforce development that creates pathways to opportunity, Economic empowerment that helps families and businesses thrive, and Community advocacy that ensures every voice is heard.

May we remember those we lost not only through our words, but through our commitment to serve, uplift and create opportunity for others.

We remember. We honor. We move forward—together.

We’re deeply saddened by the passing of George Dean, who dedicated more than three decades leading the Greater Phoenix Urban League and nearly 50 years as an Urban League executive.

Before making his way to Phoenix, George led Urban League affiliates in Sacramento, California and Omaha, Nebraska with fiscal accountability, community responsiveness, and a steadfast commitment to expanding opportunity for underserved communities.

“Those of us who had the privilege to work alongside George knew him as a principled advocate, a thoughtful strategist, and a passionate believer in the power of community. He understood that lasting change requires persistence, partnership, and an unshakable faith in people’s potential. His work opened doors for countless individuals and families, and his legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the institution he helped strengthen.” —

We’re grateful for George’s decades of leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to equity, which became a powerful force for economic empowerment, workforce development, educational opportunity, housing access, and civil rights advocacy.
