It’s never too early to start planning for the holidays!

Each year, Aviva’s community comes together to make sure the children and youth we serve have gifts to open during the holiday season. One of the biggest ways you can help is by hosting a toy drive with your company, school, organization or community group.

There was plenty of laughter, lots of catching up with old friends, and new connections made at our annual Platinum Associates Luncheon yesterday!

Our Plats enjoyed time together, a great meal, and the chance to hear from Ivette Hurtado, an Aviva alum who shared how Aviva has helped her create a new story for her life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the afternoon so special.

When a family moves into Wallis House, the essentials come first: a safe place to sleep, a caseworker, a plan. At Aviva, we know helping families find solid ground takes more than meeting basic needs. It also means creating space for joy and the kinds of moments that make life feel normal again.

That's why, every quarter, we throw a birthday party. There's always cake. There's always decorations. And there's always June Bilgore.

Nearly 50 years ago, June learned to make balloon animals for her son’s birthday because hiring a magician wasn’t in the budget. Today, she brings that same joy to Aviva.

A longtime volunteer and Platinum Associate, June is a familiar face at Wallis House birthday parties, where she’s often surrounded by kids requesting balloon dogs, flowers, swords and hats.

June believes small acts of kindness can create ripples far beyond the moment itself. It’s one of the reasons she continues to give her time to Aviva. As June puts it: “That’s what Aviva does, in a big way.”

Big thanks to June and all of the volunteers who help give children at Aviva moments of joy and normalcy when they need them most.

Amber Rivas, MSW, Aviva’s President & CEO, recently joined an event hosted by Entertainment to Affect Change (E2AC), an organization dedicated to creating positive change through storytelling.

The evening opened with a screening of Mama Bears—a documentary about conservative Christian mothers who come to fully embrace their LGBTQ+ children. Amber then joined a Q&A on what that kind of acceptance looks like in practice, and how it shows up every day at Aviva's Lifting Youth Up Drop-In Center.

For the young people who walk through our doors, acceptance has to be more than something we say. It means having their identity respected by staff who learn their name, access to gender-affirming items through our Rainbow Resource Closet, and people around them who understand their experiences. For a young person who has been turned away before, that sense of belonging can be the foundation for everything that comes next.

We're grateful to E2AC for the invitation and for bringing together people who care about this work. A special thank you to Aviva board member Jennie Morris for so generously opening her home for this event.

We're delighted to welcome Alycia Belle to Aviva's Board of Directors!

Alycia brings a wealth of experience, talents and connections to the table. She is the owner of Hollywood Handy, a construction company that works not only with high end clients, but also with organizations that work with the unhoused in Los Angeles. They have completed multiple renovation projects at local shelters, including The Midnight Mission and Proyecto Pastoral, upgrading dorms, bathrooms, showers, accessibility, and healthcare spaces.

She's a longtime Hollywood neighbor—a former board member of the Hollywood YMCA, a member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and a voice on the Hollywood Economic Development Committee and the Hollywood Blvd. Street Closure Committee.

We look forward to working with you, Alycia. Welcome aboard!

Fall is officially underway at Aviva’s Lifting Youth Up Drop-In Center!

Our youth recently gathered on the rooftop for a Fall Kickoff vent hosted by ADVOT with food, arts and crafts, karaoke, and games.

ADVOT is one of Aviva’s teaching artist partners. Throughout the year, their team leads art therapy sessions where our youth build communication and relationship-building skills, empowering them to become more courageous and effective self-advocates.

Big thanks to ADVOT for celebrating the season with our youth and making time for fun, connection and community.

We have some historic news to celebrate!

Aviva Board Member Judge Yvette Verastegui has been elected Assistant Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County for the 2027–28 term, making her the first Latina and only the fourth woman elected to the role.

And this isn’t the first time Judge Verastegui has made history. She currently serves as Supervising Judge of the Court’s Criminal Division—the first Latina to hold that position.

Beginning January 1, she will help lead the largest trial court in the nation, which serves nearly 10 million people across Los Angeles County.

We are incredibly proud to have her as a member of Aviva’s Board of Directors and thrilled to celebrate this remarkable milestone with her.

A big thank you to the CIM employees who spent time with Aviva assembling hygiene kits for youth and families at Wallis House and our Drop-In Center.

CIM has been a wonderful partner to Aviva in more ways than one. Last year, they rallied colleagues around a peer-to-peer Pride campaign benefiting our Drop-In Center. This year, they rolled up their sleeves and came together for a hands-on service project.

We loved meeting the CIM team and are grateful for the opportunity to share more about our work with them.

Rosh Hashanah begins tonight, and it feels like a fitting time to reflect on Aviva’s history.

Our story begins with a Jewish entrepreneur named Asher Hamburger, who developed department stores catering to the working class in early 1900s Los Angeles. He and his wife Hannah shared their success with the Jewish community, becoming prominent philanthropists. They founded an organization dedicated to young Jewish women and children in 1915 that eventually became Aviva—a Hebrew name associated with spring, renewal and growth.

In 1966, our mission expanded to serve children, youth and families of all backgrounds across Los Angeles. While we are no longer a Jewish organization, it is an important part of our history.

To our Jewish neighbors, friends, colleagues and supporters celebrating Rosh Hashanah, we wish you a happy new year.
