Black Girl Magic Personified: Meet Alena Analeigh Wicker, A STEM Trailblazer!
For Women In History Month, and always, we are spotlighting incredible Black women and teenage girls who are making HERstory! 🔥
Meet Alena Analeigh Wicker, born November 19, 2008, a true phenomenon from Fort Worth, Texas. She was reading chapter books at three years old, but her journey wasn't without its challenges. In elementary school, she faced bullying for her intelligence and was even told by a teacher that "she would never get all A's because of her skin color." Her parents wisely decided to homeschool her.
Alena quickly accelerated, graduating high school near Fort Worth at just 12 years old! She then began attending Arizona State University.
Her brilliance shines: "I don't want to say I was different," she says, "I was just thinking about the different possibilities of what I could do... why not move forward if I have the chance to do so?"
While in high school, Alena noticed the stark racial and gender disparities in STEM fields. This led her to found The Brown STEM Girl website—a powerful initiative providing scholarships, mentorships, internships, and support to girls of Color pursuing STEM education, including study abroad opportunities! She even started "Dorm Room Makeover" for first-year girls of Color in STEM.
After a trip to Jordan, her focus shifted to Viral Immunology. In May 2022, at just 13 years old, the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Heersink School of Medicine offered Alena admission for 2024 through an early acceptance program! She graduated high school at 15 and is now a college graduate at that age too! She's also studied at Arizona State University.
Her powerful advice to Black girls: "Don't let your race, your gender or anyone tell you who you are and who you can not be. Make it happen for yourself."
Alena Analeigh Wicker is a beautiful, undeniable example of Black Girl Magic in action. Black women and teenagers are legendary—long live Black women!
