Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival

Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival is a Nonprofit Arts Organization celebrating 15 years of uncompromising films. http://www.dtlaff.com

DTLAFF celebrates the renaissance of downtown L.A. in all its facets – its historic movie palaces, its legendary cultural institutions, its thriving business and residential communities, and its unique ethnic-cultural diversity. Since 2008 the festival has screened more than a thousand narrative and documentary features and shorts. Highlights included the West Coast premiere of Spike Lee’s “Passin

g Strange: The Movie,” a music documentary and live performance series at The Grammy Museum at L.A. Live, a multi-faceted film/events program celebrating “green urban living,” a showcase of independent films utilizing 3-D technology, an in-depth look at L.A.’s burgeoning micro-cinema community, the L.A. premiere of Michael Jackson’s “lost” film documenting his Jackson 5 tour of Africa in the 1970s, and a tribute to indie icon Seymour Cassell. This year’s festival will continue DFFLA’s tradition of fearless innovation in programming and exciting after-screening events held in world-class lounges, private downtown artists’ lofts and historic theaters.

The line between gaming and movies is officially blurred. Netflix, Lionsgate, and Sega are partnering with Roblox to let creators build games based on blockbuster franchises like Squid Game, Twilight, and Sonic. At the same time, beloved games like Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy’s are becoming box office hits. Are interactive platforms the new movie trailer? What do you think—would you play a film before watching it?

Who gets to wear the cape?

From outsider to icon, Superman has always been the ultimate immigrant: fleeing a dying planet, raised on foreign soil, forever passing as “normal.” But while the story speaks to exile and difference, the body it arrives in has always looked the same.

What happens when our symbols don’t change with us? What does it mean to reimagine a hero, and who gets to feel seen in the process?

Let’s talk about it in the comments below.

Horror has always been a space to confront fear, but recently the genre has become a nuanced means of portraying underrepresented voices too often left out of the frame.

Swipe through to read our list of indie horror films that do just that.

Summer romances in independent film are rarely built to last. They unfold in fragments over a weekend, across a city, between strangers who know the clock is ticking.

In WEEKEND (dir. Andrew Haigh), two men meet and part before anything can settle. In BEFORE SUNRISE (dir. Richard Linklater), a train ride through Vienna becomes a doorway to something fleeting but real. In CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (dir. Luca Guadagnino), a summer in Northern Italy is all the time they have.

Each film makes space for intimacy without expectation. Just moments, honestly shared. These films remind us that some connections aren’t meant to continue. They’re meant to be felt.

Which Superman would you let save you?

Each era has reimagined the iconic superhero. From Christopher Reeve’s quiet idealism to Brandon Routh’s nostalgic charm. From Henry Cavill’s brooding isolation to David Corenswet’s hopeful reboot on the horizon. These portrayals don’t just represent a character, they mirror the cultural moment that shaped him.

Is Superman a savior, a stranger, a burden, a symbol? Is he supposed to feel human, or remind us we’re not?

Which Superman speaks to your moment?

“And I can still see the sun, the sea, and the soldiers.”

Claire Denis’ Beau Travail (1999) is a fever dream of masculinity, ritual, and repressed desire. Set against the stark beauty of Djibouti’s landscapes, every frame pulses with heat and discipline. Denis Lavant moves like a man haunted. The final dance? Cinema history.
