✨ Day 4 in Oaxaca was an absolute dream filled with deep-rooted traditions, ancient history, and unforgettable flavors! 🇲🇽✨

🌳 Visiting the Tule Tree
We kicked off the morning by visiting the world’s widest tree! At over 36 feet in diameter and thousands of years old, standing beneath this majestic giant in Santa María del Tule was a truly grounding experience.

🏛️ Exploring Mitla Archeological Site
Next, we journeyed to Mitla, the ancient religious center for the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples. Guided through the sacred ruins, we stood in awe of the intricate, mosaic-like geometric stone designs crafted centuries ago.

🍨 Local Ice Cream Break
After soaking in all that history, we stopped for a refreshing break to enjoy authentic, hand-churned local ice cream. From Mexican vanilla to spicy fruit sorbets, it was the ultimate sweet pitstop!

🕯️ Beeswax Candle Making
We then visited a local family who welcomed us into their workshop to share the generational art of beeswax candle making. Watching them handcraft delicate, elaborate designs using age-old techniques was mesmerizing.

🧵 Zapotec Textile Demonstration
Right alongside the candlemakers, we watched a Zapotec weaving demonstration. From harvesting organic dyes to operating traditional looms, we learned about the months of labor and craftsmanship behind every rug and garment.

🥃 Mezcal Distillery Tour & Tasting
No trip to Oaxaca is complete without exploring its most famous spirit! We stopped by an authentic local palenque (distillery) to learn how agave is traditionally harvested, roasted in underground pits, and distilled. To top it off, we enjoyed a guided tasting of artisanal mezcals, sipping everything from smoky espadín to rare wild agave varieties.

🍲 Authentic Zapotec Lunch
We ended our day’s adventures gathering around the table at a local family’s home for a traditional homemade Zapotec lunch. Welcomed like family, we shared incredible food, stories, and warm hospitality that nourished both body and soul.

Today, October 8, marks Latina Equal Pay Day—a powerful reminder of the ongoing push for economic justice and workplace equity.

On average, Latinas working full-time make just 58 cents for every dollar earned by non-Hispanic white men (and as low as 53 cents when including part-time, seasonal, and migrant workers). That means it takes Latinas nearly ten extra months of work just to equal what their peers earned in the previous year.

Equal pay isn’t just a figure on a paycheck—it’s about economic stability for families, opportunity for future generations, and recognizing the true value Latina workers bring to every industry every day.

Let’s keep advocating for equal pay, pay transparency, and fair opportunities across the board. 💡✨

Our Oaxaca Cooking Experience

DAY 3 🌮❤️A Taste of Oaxaca: Our Culinary Experience

One of our favorite experiences in Oaxaca was getting to know the city through its food — and we definitely came hungry!

Activities:

1. Visit to Mercado Benito Juárez
We started at Mercado Benito Juárez shopping for the fresh ingredients we would use later in our cooking class. Along the way, we learned more about the incredible flavors and traditions of Oaxacan cuisine — from an amazing variety of moles and chiles to dried grasshoppers (chapulines)and other regional specialties.

2) Get Cooking!
After the market, we headed into the kitchen with a local chef and got hands-on with traditional Oaxacan cooking. Over the next couple of hours, we learned how to make fresh tortillas, three different salsas, an appetizer, a soup, and a delicious mole(with the menu varying depending on the season).

We wrapped up with dessert and a refreshing agua fresca then sat down together to enjoy the meal we had prepared.

It was so much more than a cooking class — it was a delicious way to experience Oaxaca’s culture, traditions, and flavors firsthand. 🇲🇽✨
