picks for marking Black History Month. She’s highlighting the beauty and brilliance of Columbus writers - this month and beyond.

📝 Barbara Fant ( . Currently living in California and originally from Youngstown, Barb lived in Columbus for many years. She is a dynamic poet. Her latest book, Joy in the Belly of a Riot: Poems, Prayers, Memories and Meditations is a poetry collection that transforms her personal experiences related to trauma into healing and joy.

📝 Cynthia Amoah (). A spoken word artist, performer, TEDx speaker and writer, Cynthia is originally from Ghana. Her writing explores identify and belonging, leaving you challenged and inspired. She was Creative Mornings February speaker. She is the author of the chapbook, Handrails.

📝 Hanif Abdurraqib (). A proud graduate of Beechcroft High School, Hanif is a dynamic poet, essayist and cultural critic. In 2022, he was selected for the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. His books include They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us: Essays and There’s Always This Year: Basketball and Ascension. He candidly uses his lived experiences as a lens to examine culture and identity.

📖 Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People by - This is a beautiful journey through pain and joy as she explores Black culture’s connections to the color blue throughout history.

🎙️My Momma Told Me () - Langston Kermin and David Gborie host where they “dive deep into the most exciting, groundbreaking and sometimes problematic Black conspiracy theories.”

📖 Kings and Pawns by - Explores the relationship between Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson, McCarthyism, and Robinson’s testimony against Robeson during the Cold War. “Bryant is one of my favorite non-fiction authors and I’m excited to see how he tells this story.”

Here are Annie’s picks!

📖 Step by Step!: How the Lincoln School Marchers Blazed a Trail to Justice by Debbie Rigaud and Carlotta Penn and illustrated by Nysha Lilly. This book follows the story of Black mothers in Hillsboro, Ohio who attempted to enroll their children in the all-white elementary school following the landmark Brown v. Board of Education.

📚 Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action has a number of resources for younger and older students. These can easily be used at home as well.

📖 Noname Book Club - connects community members with radical books by Black authors, curated by poet and artist, Noname.

Strike, don’t shop, show up at the statehouse. Push back however you can. Anything but business as usual.

Somali and Black student organizations in Minneapolis are calling for a general strike in Minnesota and nationwide, after the execution-style murder of Alex Pretti. We all saw the historic action on Friday in Minneapolis, and we haven’t seen anything like this in decades.
